There are signs
Dividing in
That I couldn't abide
I wouldn't miss it again
Burning every bridge that I cross
To find some beautiful place to get lost
I had true love
But made it die
Pushed out of the way
She said please stay
Burning every bridge that I cross
To find some beautiful place to get lost
To find some beautiful place to get lost
I don't know where I'll go now
And I don't really care who follows me there
But ill burn every bridge that I cross
To find some beautiful place to get lost
To find some beautiful place to get lost
Dividing in
That I couldn't abide
I wouldn't miss it again
Burning every bridge that I cross
To find some beautiful place to get lost
I had true love
But made it die
Pushed out of the way
She said please stay
Burning every bridge that I cross
To find some beautiful place to get lost
To find some beautiful place to get lost
I don't know where I'll go now
And I don't really care who follows me there
But ill burn every bridge that I cross
To find some beautiful place to get lost
To find some beautiful place to get lost

"Burning every bridge you cross" -- shunning everyone you meet. "Find some beautiful place to get lost" -- being totally alone, away from the people you feel so alienated from. "Had true love, made it die, pushed her away" -- unable to be totally giving and intimate in a relationship, always holding back. "I've been outside, invited in, but couldn't abide" -- people have reached out to be friends, but they are always shunned eventually, somehow.
Maybe I'm projecting, but I think this is a song about self-isolation and the inability to be really be close to anyone, time and time again always going back to being alone intentionally.
"I've been outside
Invited in
But I couldn't abide
I wouldn't LISTEN again"
I'm positive about this.
And why do people always assume elliott's songs are about drugs? They're usually pretty straightforward with a simple meaning. It's about being alone and trying to find meaning in life by keeping himself moving.
love you elliott
I think it's titled "Let's Get Lost" not because he wants to find someone to keep up with him, but after Bruce Weber's excellent 1988 documentary about California jazz musician Chet Baker's life (called "Let's Get Lost").
And to all the people who think it's not about drugs -- Chet Baker was a massive heroin addict.
Ironically, the upbeat-ness is what makes this song even more tragic; His attempts at conquering this addiction (in order for his relationships to work) have failed. He now accepts that this will always be he's cross to bare. It's as if he's cried about it so much to a point where he can't anymore and now he's just kinda singing in the rain about it (a response to ‘Twighlight’ perhaps?). Of course the song has a happy sing along feel to it, but that’s only cos its mimicking his high spirits in anticipation of the immanent (drug induced) high
I’m sorry but I struggle to see how this song could be about anything else but drugs (and so is the song ‘Twighlight’ btw). I don’t know why this upsets people so much. He’s never glorifying drugs and addiction, even when it appears like he is.
"Color Bars" by Elliott Smith. It's on Figure 8.
I don't know why no one has mentioned this already.
