Lyrics for Sound Effects And Overdramatics as interpreted by Adidasx007

Sound Effects And Overdramatics Lyrics
When the shirt came off, it was all in time
When a minute turned into a mile
And then I broke that grin, and I cut it out
And you got all turned on by the taste of your sin
When I mention blue, all you thought was color
When you mention drugs, all I thought was sober
When your pants came off and I turned you over
When you mention blue

Kill, smile, cut it out for me this time
Smile, haven't seen him smile in a while

Keep the mask aligned
Get it up in time
There's a space between valleys
and try and catch a vibe
Make a circle square, a rectangle curve
Use a smile as a noun and I think like a verb
Run quick switch sides
Spill the filled up canister
And the room is shaking
Now you're changing places,
and I switched my pace,
and my breathing races when you mention blue

Kill!, Smile. Cut it out for me this time!
Smile, haven't seen him smile in a while
Kill, Smile. Cut it out for me this time! (This is not)
Smile, haven't seen him smile in a while
Kill , smile, cut out for me cut it cut it out
Smile, cut cut it out for me cut it cut it out
We cut it out!
Kill, Smile. Cut it out for me this time!
Smile, haven't seen him smile in a while
Kill, Smile. Cut it out for me this time! (This is not)
Smile, haven't seen him smile in a while

Get down and stay awake
Smile

I firmly believe he says "Kill your smile" in the chorus.

Some other guy does back up screams in the bridge and choruses...dunno who he is...I'll know when the CD comes out and I see liner notes.

The song's about Crystal Meth. Blue is slang for Crystal Meth. "When I mention blue, all you thought was color"
And sex..maybe gay sex? "When the pants came off and I turned you over", "Run quick switch sides
Spill the filled up canister
And the room is shaking
Now you're changing places,
and I switched my pace"

It's also about facades, that's what the entire smile thing is about. It's about pretending to be okay when you're not.

alright so i think this song saying 'kill, smile, cut it out for me this time' i dont think its 'you, smile' b/c instead of turning to a drug.. he is killing his past life as a druggy, kinda like a reglance back to 'say days ago' and i think the refrence to blue is to meth but its also to water and pureity of how water can be.. it might be just me but i think the coolest thing about this song is how sean screams with him... oh and i think when he says kill he is just useing it as refrence to 'get rid of'.. and i think this is an amazing and briliant song... i love it

I agree with you completly! Now, not to be the type that comes on the these message boards to talk about the band's personal lives, but...
With the homosexual comment, I think you may be quite right. Many signs point to Bert being gay...pictures, interviews, song lyrics...But I don't want to piss people off further. So if you want to talk, message me!! Now for all those people that I expect will bitch at me: there is NOTHING wrong with being a homosexual...I just wanted to further the point...maybe that is what the song is about. Meth and doin' it in the ass?

But yes, about the song...I love this song. This, as well as "Choke Me", are my favourite songs by The Used. Both songs are so powerfull and edgy. I love it!

Well, I don't think it is meant in a gay way. If you read the "Thank-Yous" Bert mentions Kate (his late ex) and says that all of the songs were written for her. Also, guys can do a chick up the ass just as easily as they can a male. (Because I do think it means that)

But besides that, this song is just so extremely emotional! I love it. For some reason (and this is only my opinion) I think it means being with someone, but feeling abusive and angry. Like.......you want to punish them because they are driving you crazy. You want to make love to them and hurt them at the same time.

This song kicks ass, wether its about him bein a homo or not.. the chorus is sick, and the two verses are nice.. but the ending of the song is bad, they shoulda played more of the chorus between the two verses, and then added a 3rd verse to replace the retarded meaningless screams

This was the only song on the album that didn't have complete lyrics in the inset. I have no idea where people got the lyrics I find on most sites (including this one) but they somehow managed to get THE ONLY LINE PRINTED IN THE INSET wrong!
Wrong: Haven't seen him smile in awhile
Right: Haven't seen him smile in a little while
This leads me to doubt the accuracy of these lyrics’. I took it upon myself to figure out the lyrics for myself. It was really hard; Bert sure doesn’t have a die-hard take on pronunciation when he sings. (look at how on the first line, he ends “off” with a K-sound, or the ambiguity between “you” or “kill” in the heavy chorus.)
Here’s the best I could come up with. I’ve capitalized the parts that I thought sounded different from the lyrics above.

When the shirt came off, it was all in time
When a m.m.m.minute turned into a mile
And then I broke that GRID, and I cut it out
And you got all turned on by the taste of THE OCEAN

When I mention blue, all you thought was color
When you mention drugs, all I thought was sober
When your pants came off and I turned you over
When you mention blue...

Kill
Smile
Cut it out for me this time
Smile
Haven't seen him smile in a LITTLE while

Keep the mask, ALIGN, get it up in time
There's a space between valleys and TRY CATCH a vibe
Make a circle square, a rectangle curve
Use a smile as a noun and NOW think like a verb

Run quick, switch sides, SPOON FILLS WITH CANCER
And the room is shaking, now you're changing places
Then I switched my pace and my breathing races
When you mention blue...

Kill
Smile
Cut it out for me this time
Smile
Haven't seen him smile in a LITTLE while

[Background scream by Sean Ingram of Coalesce: (This is not) x6 (YOUR smile)]
Kill
Smile
Cut it out for me this time
Smile
Haven't seen him smile in a LITTLE while

[There's a poem buried in the first part of this interlude that I just can't make out]

YOU
Smile
Cut it out for me, cut it, cut it out
Smile
YOU
Cut it out for me, cut it, cut it out

(BREAK OUT AND HOWL)

Kill
Smile
CCCCut it out for me this time
Smile
Haven't seen him smile in a LITTLE while

[Background scream by Sean Ingram of Coalesce: (This is not) x6 (YOUR smile)]
Kill
Smile
Cut it out for me this time
Smile
Haven't seen him smile in a LITTLE while

(MY GOD, JANIE)
(BREAK down and stay awake)

Aaaaaaahaahaaa, smile.

I’m very interested in hearing people’s thoughts on my interpretation of the lyrics. Again, ambiguity is prevalent throughout the song, so all of my capitalized changes are quite open to question / interpretation. (ps: anyone with good speakers / headphones -- or a professional sound editor? -- might be able to make out that poem in the interlude. doing so would instantly make you hot shit.)

LyricalAvenger, i'm not sure how well your hearing is, but from what i, and everyone else, hear, the lyrics posted are correct. and the inset lyrics CAN be wrong, but he DOES in fact say "haven't seen him smile in awile". besides, sometimes the lyrics are printed before the songs are actually produced, and the singers can and often do change or morph the words in one way or another.

great overall song, this CD is an excellent way to evolve their music while still managing to keep a grip on their old style.

You know what....I hear something diff than both of you....anyone else hear this? "Keep the mask, aligned, get it up INSIDE"

Anyway, I have no freakin idea what the hell these lyrics mean. I hope someone here can figure it out....cuz i'm soooo confused. But I LOVE this song. I've loved the Used for a while, but never really liked their really hard songs as much as the lighter ones. However, this one really gets me, and I can't stop listening to it.

plus i think "get it up inside" makes more sense, especially before the line about valleys.

Actually, i have a few possible variations in the second verse too

Really quick switch sides
sorta feels like cancer
and the room is shaking
now you're changing phases
and i switch my pace and my breathing races
when you mention blue

I think i have pretty good speakers....someone tell me if you hear this too

I also agree with LyricalAvenger on "Grid" and "try catch a vibe" but even if the lyrics said "little while", there is no chance that it is in the song. i can't even here ONE possible extra syllable, let alone two.
Sorry for all the posts, but I'm just discovering things.

Heh heh... well, after listening to the song more carefully, I have to concede that the "little while" lyrics are a misprint. Bert indeed says "Haven't seen him smile EEN awhile." I'd noticed the syllable shortage early on, but I had thought of it, even sang along with it as "Haven't seen him smile'na LIL while."

TWO NEW EDITS
When your pants came off and I TURN you over
Haven't seen him smile in AWHILE

I don't hear the L in "break out and howl," but "break out and how" just doesn't make fucking sense. Thoughts?

...

Annie, I just checked each of your suggestions (inside, really quick, sorta feels like cancer, phases, switch) and I've changed my second choral lead-in as such:

REALLY QUICK, switch sides, spoon fills with cancer
And the room is shaking, now you're changing places
Then I SWITCH my pace and my breathing races
When you mention blue...

I can see why you heard the other lyrics; like with "off" in the first line ending with a K, Bert's got some funny ideas on pronunciation.

*Time is said with a "ts" sound, like in "biTS": Get it up in tsime
*While the first part of the line is fairly incoherent, the last two words of that line are With Cancer
*There's definetely an L in Places

Thanks for your help! I welcome all other comments as well as somebody bold enough to figure out that poem at the beginning of the interlude.

On a personal note, that heavy chorus kicks way too much ass. Listening closely to it, you hear all of the effects at work, inverted screams and shit. This song really earns the right to its own name.

Afterthought: Yeah, probably about gay ass sex.
Haven't seen HIM smile in awhile... not her
