I'm not looking for a mommy
Don't seem like you need a poppy
Plenty of time till you're an old lady
And the same for me before I'm an old man

We could celebrate it monthly
How we stayed individuated
Oh kid, congratulations
You held on to your dear dear dear identitiy
Even while spending so much time with me

I see two blackbirds in the yard
They are paired together
They are feeding
They are flying
They are fucking

I see two dragonflies do the same in midair
There is something
Special in the air

We wake up in the same bed
But with different bodies
God bless our separate heads
Oh desire will run about

That's what the geese were all roaring about
The fact that our love
Is not that kind of love
Not that selfish love

Says what's yours is mine
And what's mine is yours

I don't need to turn you out
You don't need to turn me into your whore

We are not some rutting pair of wild boars
We're just psyched so psyched
So psyched so fucking psyched

That's what the geese are all roaring about
That's what their hearts were all open about

Our love
That kind of love
Unselfish love

General Comment:the line about the geese roaring interests me. I looked at some possible symbolism and found that in shamanism, its believed that geese are symbols of marriage, fidelety and the importance of a solid, happy home and family life... So thats interesting to note when considering the songs meaning. It fits in with whispersoft's interpretation pretty well.

General Comment:I think that it is also underrated, until I realized that TVotR does this as an encore song, which obviously means that they know it's a masterpiece. This song is just gorgeous. I don't know what it means. Love without labels I guess. And also, referring to the first verse, it's not someone you NEED to have in your life, someone you want and love to have in your life. (The opposite of the song All I Need by Radiohead, look it up if you don't know it)

General Comment:To me, this song is about consummate love. (Fully expressed intimacy, passion and commitment in a relationship) After I'd read all the lyrics, this song became really meaningful to me and I kind of view it as the kind of love I strive to keep/have.

I think the mommy/poppy bit reads "we don't need the other to care for us in the way a parent does." a childish sort of need. sometimes in a relationship one partner becomes the more responsible one, helping support the other (through money or what else) and the other becomes like a child, completely dependant. since he mentions there's a long time before they get old (and would then perhaps rely upon the care of the other), i think this makes sense.

when he's watching the animals out in nature, eating together, flying together, having sex... he feels like that's them. just living life together. without complex drama or need. just a quiet, content way of life.

throughout the song he refers to how they have their own "individuality" and i agree with what whispersoft interpreted here. their love says "i don't need to turn you out, you don't need to turn me into your whore"... they respect, and love eachother's unique personalities and views on life. animals don't change for eachother. it seems "natural" to him for them to just be, and be together (nicely said egotrippen).

General Comment:Maybe I'm completely incorrect, but I interpreted it to mean be about a situation like friends with benefits. Fuck buddies basically.

But that it doesn't mean they don't care about each other... on the contrary they may love each other more than a traditional couple does with all the labels and expectations and the whole gig. They're unselfish with one another. They don't demand time or fidelity. They enjoy the company when they're around, and when they're not, they live.

"I'm not looking for a mommy... Don't seem like you need a poppy" - neither one is seeking a relationship. And it goes on to talk about that neither one is old yet, and has a while until they are - so why settle down?

"How we stayed individuated... Same bed... different bodies... bless our seperate heads"

He's thankful for what they have. They both are. People in relationships tend to meld together in some ways, and loose the outer edges of themselves in the person they're with, but because they remain seperate beings they keep themselves. Unselfishly, they don't demand to have anything of the other person that isn't already given. They don't take on their traits, and don't expect a call. It is what it is.

    That kind of love.
    Unselfish love.

But I could be totally wrong. Its just how I saw it.

General Comment:Well......I feel stupid! I am generally a pretty deep thinker, but this song just floored me! I have no idea what it means! All I can get out of it is......they don't have sex? Wow, that really just bums me out. If one truly loves the other and the other likewise thats the most beautiful, most intimate gift you can give. Two people who really truly do love each other not having sex? That may be the saddest thing I've ever heard!
