Lyrics for The Writhing South as interpreted by AllStarMe

The Writhing South Lyrics
searching for blood in the salty sea
the sun beating down
on the chest in back of me
looking for drugs in a southern town
i’ve got this red right hand
that points me south
the puke green clouds
just spat me out
into the hot, hot lands
i landed with no shoes

i hear
"hey, come pollinate me"

across the room,
i hope to watch you
writhe again soon

they've got the army of ears
they can’t hear you now
i got the piss in my veins
and these furrowed brows
you've got this one last chance
to burn me, turn me down
if not, i’ve got these last 12 bucks
to spend on you
you can take me anywhere
your sick mind wants to
use yourself to fuel me using you

i hear
"hey, come pollinate me"

"They've got the army of ears, they can't hear you now" is a clever line.

I think the song is about Max trying to get signed but because of the typical unoriginal bands that the rcord labels are happy to sign he isnt getting a foot in. He could, but as shown in belt, he will only do things the way he wants to do them and he won't change. First verse is about him looking to be signed, "for drugs", maybe to feed his habit of music. Then being rejected, "puke green cloud just spat me out". Pollinate me, sign me. Hopes to see the typical bands with their record companys "writhe again soon" or fail. "They've got the army of ears, they can't hear you now" is a clever line. The record companys are supposed to recognise talent "(army of ears)" but just ignore it when they hear it, just because it's different "furrowed brows". But he's still passionate "piss in my veins". I cant understand the last couple of lines tho, posssibly he's taking a stab at those who do just follow the trend of the same old music and actually pay to get there. Or his 12 bucks are his own original song style to give to them and they can do what they want to him as long as he's soing what he wants and getting his messages across to the people, that emos and all trends are a waste of time, stupid and pitiful. By doing this the record label would fuel him up, make him even more passionate but angry.

I always thought it was about sex:

"Hey, come pollinate me"
"Across the room, I hope to watch you WRITHE again soon."

I like mattz123 interpretation. Especially since at the end, he says, "I've got these last $12 to spend on you," CDs typically cost $12, and he's saying, whatever I've given in, I'll go buy your music.

Maybe?

"you've got this one last chance
to burn me, turn me down"

I think it means..you can like his music or not and it doesnt matter

"if not, i’ve got these last 12 bucks
to spend on you"

I think what blueofthesky is correct with the CD thing, i bought the CD for 12 bucks, lol.

"you can take me anywhere
your sick mind wants to"

I think this means you can take the lyrics however you want good or bad.

If I'm honest...someone mentioned it's likely to be about masturbation to me, and it's all I can imagine it to be about now.
It's probably wrong...but for example...
'the salty sea'
'I've got this red right hand that points me SOUTH'
'You can take me anywhere your sick mind wants to'

I don't know...maybe I'm sick, maybe I'm wrong.
Ha...this was just my take on things =)

I agree with mixed_tape, sort of. I don't think it really has any political meaning, though Max is notorious for putting them in his songs.

I don't think it's about masturbation but more like..using somebody (just some random person, I think) for sex.

But maybe my meaning is a bit literal?

after reading what everyone else has to say (i originally thought it was about sex) i really think it could go either way. another stab at the record industry and music, or just plain sex/masturbation.

i have to say though, "come pollinate me" is the most original come-on i've ever heard ;)

"use yourself to fuel me using you"
i always thought it was
use yourself to feel me using you.
makes sense.
unless it was just an error.

i dont know what kind of masturbating you guys are doing.... but if your hands are gettin real red, try some sort of lotion..

think of south not as in alabama and florida
not as in genitals...

think of north south east west in vertical and horizontal dimensions.

SOUTH would be hell in a sense.

looking for drugs in a southern town...
southern might be the word he's using to describe a town as sinful.

i mean its not a perfect explanation by anymeans.
but i like it.

he uses ugly imagery of sex and drugs to describe the greed of the music industry and the process of being signed and selling your music. music executives do not care how the music comes across, so long as it makes money. they are not soncerned about the content, only the profit.

it's kind of upsetting that no one has commented on the fact that he's alluding to nick cave and the bad seeds' song "red right hand".

i absolutely love this song.
But in the liner notes, it's "Use your SOUTH to fuel me using you"

I suppose i can see where your comming from with the whole "song being a metaphor with Max's Battle With the record companys" but i cant help but feel it has to do with when he had his nervous brake down. And being on a bender in a town he hardly knows. As that is what happend when he was taken in.

It would make sense as the song reminds me of Nick Cave and the bad seats "red right hand"

Also "The Piss In My Verins" i think is a referal to alchol in his system.

"these last 12 bucks to spend on you" - again i feel its him wasting his last of his money on drugs or alchol.

Well thats what i think of when i hear it atleast lol.

i thought the lyrics in the second verse went
"I got the PISSED in my veins and these furrowed brows"

which would mean he is angry, the rage flowing in his veins, and furrowed eyebrows are the expression to show anger

fix.

people, people, there's a fucking lyric sheet in the liner notes. no more yammering about what you "think it might be" because that's not up for debate when they're published by the band/label.
i'm more interested in the thoughts behind the song. for instance, who is he hoping to watch writhe?

i personally thought "i’ve got this red right hand that points me south"
was referring to the album cover.. some kind of vague allusion to his penis! but i don't listen to nick cave so, whatever

I think this song is parrelleling sex to being in the music industry. Some of the lyrics some of you guys were talking about earlier. "Burn me, turn me down" and "last $12 to spend on you" sound like they're music industry refrences, however, I also think he's telling a story about as he moved into the city to become a musician he meets this girl who is basically the next 'girl who's pride makes her hard to forget' He's hitting on her at a bar and he's got $12 left to buy booze and spend on her to try to convince her to sleep with him. He wants to watch her 'writhe'. Max is basically telling a really standard one night stand story in the most insane way possible.

He's basically comparing us to him in this story. We puruse around CDs stores and websites looking for the next thing to entertain us. We don't care what or who it is, if they're not attractive to us we move on, sometimes we don't even pay for it.

Max Bemis is a genius
