Lyrics for Chia Like I Shall Grow as interpreted by AllStarMe

Chia Like I Shall Grow Lyrics
i've watched you all succeed
with the highest marks in greed
from my cave
where you're displayed
like photographs that bleed
and my teeth grind names
into their ivory membranes
i am hate everlasting
with this sickly spell i'm casting

discard all feelings
the stars scar my ceiling
sun, i won't spare you
moon, i won't spare you

and my pain is mine
it’s become my friend with time
chia like it grows
watch it fester for my foes
one day i'm gonna get up
get right back into the city
with my flamethrower mouth
you bet your life it won't be pretty

i discard all my feelings
as the stars still scar my ceiling
i won’t spare you

photograph
why’d you have to go
and take a picture of a life like that
you aren’t new enough
i give up on you
look at you
pretty boy, floating face
down in a pond of glue
you aren’t new enough
we give up on all those like you

discard all feelings
the stars scar my ceiling
i won't spare you
i shall grow and grow

i always took it as anger towards people who don't deserve to be where they are or have what they have. like certain celebrities or shitty bands or something. but that beowulf shit totally makes sense

wellllll.

i know this is incorrect.
but over the time this song has grown on me, i have always thought of it as being in the perspective of Satan.
i't probably because around that time i was forced to read Paradise Lost in my lit class. haha.
anywho.. here are some parts of the song that might show what i mean:

~the entirety of the beginning of the song always reminds me of someone sitting in a batcave-like area, in which a man is sitting, watching people through monitors. he knows of their greed.

~"i am hate everlasting
with this sickly spell i'm casting
discard all feelings
the stars scar my ceiling"

his ceiling is the earth, as hell is where he dwells. he knows nothing but hatred.

~"and my pain is mine
it's become my friend with time
chia like it grows
watch it fester for my foes
one day i'm gonna get up
get right back into the city
with my flamethrower mouth
you bet your life it won't be pretty"

in Paradise Lost, Satan grew to befriend his everlasting pain, as it grew over time. he waits, and longs, for the day that he will get back into the world and destroy us all.

ehem.. its probably all just a big metaphor though.

yeah, i could totally see where thekid2006 is coming from, i read beowulf and it all fits into place. and considering that max is a lyrical genius, he probably did base it on the story. this song is so legendary, i think maybe the best song on is a real boy.

I agree with thekid2006 that this song probably is about Beowulf. Say Anything are self proclaimed history buffs and I can imagine they would read a book as influential as Beowulf. Plus alot of the points thekid2006 said about Beowulf seem to fit in with what the song is about.

Max feels like an outcast he sits in his room alot, he sees all his friends succeeding in their lives because they just went to school and got jobs. Max is somewhat bitter that they have sold out on what they liked to do. As he sits in his room he becomes increasingly bitter. The thing I think is really cool about using a chia pet as his metaphor is that chia pets grow so easily. You just water them and they're ready to sit on your window.

As far as the stars thing I thing this is a combination of his thoughts on fate, and destiny, it's so right in front of him/out of reach. Also I have stars I put on my ceiling at home when I was a little kid and I've been wanting to take them down for years but never got around it it. I see it as a metaphor for childhood or innocence. Maybe it's like he had these dreams when he was a little kid, and now, he sees how horrible everything's come out. And looking up at those stars they're almost mockingly staring back. 'the stars still scar my ceiling'

This song is a perfect example of how songs can be interpreted in so many different ways. The Grendal thing really isn't that far off, it seems about as likely as anything else here.

i think this could be about max reflecting back on his life.. looking at old photographs and thinking of the greedy routes his siblings/old friends took while he chose to focus on a passion regardless of the money he could make with it. he's also saying "i won't spare you", meaning that he will show them even though he didn't start off making so much money he will eventually grow and grow with his talent

I adore this song and this is what it means TO ME: He is pissed off because he (and his band) are playing decent songs but he's still on the outside of 'the scene' biding his time until he can come and destroy all the shitty bands (with his songs thats y he has a flame thrower mouth). And as he waits his hate is growing. Chia-like. Welllllll thats what I think anyway feel free to call me stupid but I KNOW I'M RIGHT lol

i did not say that the song was solely about grendel. it casts max as a kind of modern day grendel (with specific word for word allusions to the work) where he is against the surreal pop culture and large corporations (including the music industry) that we've come to know and accept. i'm sorry if it's a bit over your head but that's just the way that it is. it is completely feasible (and probable) that in max's first (and only) year of college he read beowulf/grendel for a lit class and realized that his beliefs fit those of a...oh, wait for it...a kind of modern day grendel.

p.s. apart from describing his wit and eloquence, the "flamethrower mouth" is in reference to the dragon--friend/advisor of grendel that attacks the town and burns down beowulf's great hall--

nay--the answer lies in medieval times.--it may sound crazy, but then again...max is a genius.
okay--if you read beowulf and grendel (gardner) this song will just click--let's look at the first line--i've watched you all succeed...--this song casts max in the role of grendel--and instead of grendel hating the meadhall, it is the surreal pop-culture that we've come to know.--grendel's name literally translates as "to grind"--grendel would also carry some of the dead/dying back to his cave to "work on" and then devour.--bloody bodies in a cave...hmm...from my cave where you're displayed like photographs (dead people also don't move) that bleed...--the stars scar my ceiling--i take this as the stars or celebrities of now are impaled on the stalactites in his cave.--and my pain is mine, it's become my friend with time--grendel was hated by all (except for his mother) for his entire life--his mother was basically deaf, dumb, and blind.--she can't share in the pain because she is not as emotionally complex as grendel...--look at you, pretty boy floating face down in a pond of glue--this line is pretty much brilliant--beowulf was astoundingly good looking,--grendel imagines killing beowulf and his horse--in a pond of glue--we know that glue and horses go hand in hand...--so yeah--max=grendel everyone else=the danes and beowulf--

it's not about bands or music, he just has such limitless pain and hurt, if metaphors were real, he could kill the masses by unleashing it.

You have to look at the songs on the album and keep in mind that they are all written about his feelings on making music, his audience, and the music industry in general.

It seems to me to be almost talking about how hes been screwed over by fate. Everyone around him is suceeding, but hes not, still, one day he'll come back and "get up" and totally pwn everyone with lyrics "flamethrower mouth".

the stars scar my ceiling
sun, i won't spare you
moon, i won't spare you

The stars are synonymous with fate, and they're scarring his ceiling (the sky) aka. fucking him over. But he'll rise up and when he does even the biggest bodies in the sky won't be spared for scorning him. The Sun and Moon=Popular bands

personally, i don't think this is about destroying the music scene.

i think this is about being pained, and NEEDING to send it back ten-fold. it's like revenge, except worse. this is such a hard feeling to explain...it's like when you fight with someone, and you say things that aren't even true just to cause them pain. i think that in this song, max just needs to emotionally hurt this person as much as possible.

just my opinion, though

Possibly my favourite SA song, speaking about how he will destroy all these "scene" and predictable, greedy, repititive, unoriginal bands with his songs. He will spare no one. Even bands who some people consider to be as idolic as the Sun and the Moon. After all his songs are completely original and ridicoulously lyrically amazing.

First of all, the first part is wrong... this is how it should be:

And my teeth grind names
Into their ivory membranes

I must say that this is my favorite Say Anything song... especially the third time he goes into the chorus.

i always thought this song was about his relationship with his dad and his childhood. the bit about "the stars scar my ceiling" really sticks out, the way kids like those glow-in-the-dark stars you stick on your ceiling. and how hard they are to get off. that part that doesn't make sense is where he says "sun", i thought it was "son" ha, i dont know.
