Lyrics for Jesus Of Suburbia as interpreted by prayingmantis84

Jesus Of Suburbia Lyrics
[Part I: Jesus of Suburbia ]

I'm the son of rage and love
The Jesus of suburbia
From the bible of none of the above
On a steady diet of
Soda pop and Ritalin
No one ever died for my sins in hell
As far as I can tell
At least the ones I got away with

But there's nothing wrong with me
This is how I'm supposed to be
In a land of make believe
That don't believe in me

Get my television fix
Sitting on my crucifix
The living room of my private womb
While the moms and Brads are away
To fall in love and fall in debt
To alcohol and cigarettes
And Mary Jane to keep me insane
And doing someone else's cocaine

[Part II: City Of The Damned]

At the center of the Earth
In the parking lot
Of the 7-11 were I was taught
The motto was just a lie
It says "home is were your heart is"
But what a shame
Cause everyone's heart
Doesn't beat the same
We're beating out of time

City of the dead
At the end of another lost highway
Signs misleading to nowhere
City of the damned
Lost children with dirty faces today
No one really seems to care

I read the graffiti
In the bathroom stall
Like the holy scriptures of a shopping mall
And so it seemed to confess
It didn't say much
But it only confirmed that
The center of the earth
Is the end of the world
And I could really care less

[Part III: I don't care]

I don't care if you don't
I don't care if you don't care [x5]

Everyone is so full of shit
Burn and raised by hipocrites
Hearts recycled but never saved
From the cradle to the grave
We are the kids of war and peace
From Anaheim to the middle east
We are the stories and disciples
Of the Jesus of Suburbia
Land of make believe
And it don't believe in me
Land of make believe
And I don't believe
And I don't care!

[Part IV: Dearly beloved]

Dearly beloved are you listening?
I can't remember a word that you were saying
Are we demented or am I disturbed?
The space that's in between insane and insecure
Oh therapy, can you please fill the void?
Am I retarded or am I just overjoyed?
Nobody's perfect and I stand accused
For lack of a better word, and that's my best excuse

[Part V: Tales of another broken home]

To live and not to breathe
Is to die in tragedy
To run, to run away
To find what you believe
And I leave behind
This hurricane of fucking lies
I lost my faith to this
This town that don't exist

So I run
I run away
To the light of masochists
And I leave behind
This hurricane of fucking lies
And I walked this line
A million and one fucking times
But not this time

I don't feel any shame
I wont apologize

When there ain't nowhere you can go
Running away from pain
When you've been victimized
Tales from another broken home

To everyone who says this ablum is just like most of the other albums out there, that green day are no good now, that this ablum is nothing compared to thier earlyer stuff and that not many people would be able to properly compare the AI album with albums such as insomnaic, dookie, kerplunk, nimrod and warning because we were "too young" when those albums came out...

-cries- they cut out the rest of my comment... grr!

...those people are ignotant. just because green day put out a different type album, doesn't make it better or worse than their other stuff, just different. also, i have listened to dookie, insomniac, nimrod and international superhits, so don't tell me i can't compare.

basically, st. jimmy and JoS are the same person, and st. jimmy falls in love with whatsername in She's a rebel "and she's holing onto my heart like a hand grenade", not in extaordinary girl (they only start going out in extaordinary girl). in letterbomb, whatsername dumps st. jimmy "she said i can't take this place, i'm leaving you tonight"

many people think wake me up when september ends is not only about st. jimmy being upset because he was dumped by whatername, but also about billie's father dying "like my father's come to pass, 7 years has gone so fast"

the song shoplifter apperently reffers to the fact that st. Jimmy has to steal to stay alive when he's on the streets.

***if any one knows what billie is reffering to when he says "to mary jane" in part one of JoS, please tell me***

great lyrics + great singing + great music = great song,

14 great songs = great album xD

I downloaded this song and when I had it playing in the background I thought that the person who ripped it screwed up and ripped four songs in a row. Then I paid attention. I never like Green Day before this album. I always dismissed them as sell outs, but this song is epic. I am actually going to buy the album.

Well, I think Billie Joe "is" the JOS, (because hes actually not - like it says in Are We The Waiting - "The rage and love, the story of my life, the JOS is a lie..") because thats whats going on in his head. Thats why it says in prt1 *JOS* bout "The land of make believe, that dont believe in me" ...hes condradicting himself and he its basically saying hw his life is doomed and thats how he is, "signs misleading to nowhere.." - pretty self explanatory. And its a bit political as it talks about hw no1 cares that no1 cares; in this world, like..."everyones so full of shit, born and raised by hypacriets" Its true. Everyone just drifts along while theres unachknowledged, theres "lost children with dirty faces today" and people dont care, it becomes meaningless.. Then he starts questioning what he thinks is actually right, cos no1 else seems to understand, or care, which is why he is "to live, and not to breathe" because of all the crap that exists, "in this town, that dont exist" - so whats the point in having any faith or fasle hope in something that isnt there?!... this is why he decides to run away from the hurricane of fucking lies, and this is when the journey beggins because the JOS is unwanted - another reason that it is a "lie" this is why he becomes St Jimmy, but it doesnt make a difference, like it explains in Letterbomb, St Jimmy is only a "figurement of your fathers rage and your mothers love.. made me the Idiot America" - much like the JOS (the son of rage and love..sound familiar??) But, The Jesus Of Suburbia and St. Jimmy are not actually the same person in "reality" (also, just note - because he dint realise the truth about St. Jimmy..this is explained in Homecoming Prt1 -"the death of St. Jimmy"... I think) So, it doesnt matter anymore, because St. Jimmy is no longer *there* and the JOS is a lie.. so what is left?!! Well, hes still angry, and trapped, thats for sure, and he wonders where St. Jimmy has gone, but its good that hes gone (NOBODY LIKES YOU, EVERYONE LEFT YOU, THEYR ALL OUT WITHOUT YOU, HAVING FUN.. even though hes actually talking to himself). So, nw, In Prt5 of Homecoming.. hes either referring to St. Jimmy as it says "send my love in a letterbomb, and visit me in hell" because St. Jimmy is dead.. going home.. but, the world is still spinning around, and Billie Joe is still going nowhere.. in fear of breaking down, so.. he might as well actually BE St. Jimmy (even though hes not).. get it? Thanks for reading neway. American Idiot is an awesome album...

i think this song is about a guy who lives in suburbia, is almost typical except he knows that he deserves more, but knows he\'ll never get it so is bitter. he also comes from a home where his father abused him and his mother loved him but did nothing about the abuse. so he lives in the world, knows he\'ll never achieve anything so becomes apathetic, turning to drugs and alcohol. he realises the place where he lives is the end of the earth- it\'s a nothing place. then he becomes angry- he doesn\'t deserve this discrimination. he then becomes angry- at his parents and upbringing, the town and america. then he starts to wonder if he is making everything up. is it worth it all this anger? is it unfounded? then, he decides he is sick of that place and runs away-\'to the lights of masochists\', to drugs and sex, everything that promises to fill the void but leaves you empty. at the end of the song, i think st jimmy makes his first appearance-\'i don\'t feel any shame i won\'t apologise...running away from pain when you\'ve been victimised-sounds like st jimmy to me.

First of all, this song is proof that Green Day (and Billy Joel Armstrong) have really matured as a song writer. This song is a 9 minute ballad, but it is good because it is more like Five 2-minute songs. Their are parts that are punk, parts that are catchy, and parts that are melodic.

This song introduces the main character of the album. He is the Jesus of Suburbia. More is expained about him as the album goes on.

I'm not really able to annalyze this song as much as I'd like. This song doesn't mean a lot by itself. It's all part of a story with the entire album. Read what others wrote for their solid opinions on the song's meaning.

It's of my opinion that this song is entirely misunderstood.

It's in a similar theme to "Buddha of Suburbia". Many Americans almost certainly think the song/album is about an entirely American guy.

I believe it to be about someone who would be considered "Arabic" by most of the uninformed Americans who bow down and worship Bush. Someone who is demonized even though he's as American as the people who are persecuting him.

There are large themes of being "between" cultures in both "Buddha of Suburbia" and "Jesus of Suburbia" (if you look at it closely).

Most people also don't consider that Jesus himself was from the Middle East (despite how he's depicted).

Notable lines include:

"We are the kids of war and peace
From Anaheim to the middle east "

and

"I don't feel any shame
I wont apologize

When there ain't nowhere you can go
Running away from pain
When you've been victimized
Tales from another broken home"

I believe many families that looked vaguely Arabic were targetted after the attacks of 9/11, even though many of them were born in America.

Just my 2 cents :)

This song is great, not just as part of the story of the album, but even just on it's own. I love the way the mood througout it.
Its tells so much in this song that i can't simply do it credit by explaining like this, and im in class now so i cant write a lengthy explanation. It is an amazing track from an amazing album. I wasnt allowed to get it so i got a friend to copy it for me.
you lucky americans, you got a 14th track! i had to download it.

OK, I have more to say about the song. This is a really good song. It shows very good song writing. The best part: It's 9 minutes long, so it's too long for the radio and MTV to kill.

Someone on the first page said some comments that Billie Joe Armstrong said about the song. He said it's a take on religion from someone who doesn't know anything about religion. It introduces the main character, Jesus of Suburbia, and he is questioning the world around him (The government, poverty, culture, probably religion). He is a lot like Billie, in that he spent a lot of his life doing nothing and smoking pot. But now he has started to question things.

Great song. It may have the best overall song writing of any Green Day song.
