Lyrics for Jesus Of Suburbia as interpreted by prayingmantis84

Jesus Of Suburbia Lyrics
[Part I: Jesus of Suburbia ]

I'm the son of rage and love
The Jesus of suburbia
From the bible of none of the above
On a steady diet of
Soda pop and Ritalin
No one ever died for my sins in hell
As far as I can tell
At least the ones I got away with

But there's nothing wrong with me
This is how I'm supposed to be
In a land of make believe
That don't believe in me

Get my television fix
Sitting on my crucifix
The living room of my private womb
While the moms and Brads are away
To fall in love and fall in debt
To alcohol and cigarettes
And Mary Jane to keep me insane
And doing someone else's cocaine

[Part II: City Of The Damned]

At the center of the Earth
In the parking lot
Of the 7-11 were I was taught
The motto was just a lie
It says "home is were your heart is"
But what a shame
Cause everyone's heart
Doesn't beat the same
We're beating out of time

City of the dead
At the end of another lost highway
Signs misleading to nowhere
City of the damned
Lost children with dirty faces today
No one really seems to care

I read the graffiti
In the bathroom stall
Like the holy scriptures of a shopping mall
And so it seemed to confess
It didn't say much
But it only confirmed that
The center of the earth
Is the end of the world
And I could really care less

[Part III: I don't care]

I don't care if you don't
I don't care if you don't care [x5]

Everyone is so full of shit
Burn and raised by hipocrites
Hearts recycled but never saved
From the cradle to the grave
We are the kids of war and peace
From Anaheim to the middle east
We are the stories and disciples
Of the Jesus of Suburbia
Land of make believe
And it don't believe in me
Land of make believe
And I don't believe
And I don't care!

[Part IV: Dearly beloved]

Dearly beloved are you listening?
I can't remember a word that you were saying
Are we demented or am I disturbed?
The space that's in between insane and insecure
Oh therapy, can you please fill the void?
Am I retarded or am I just overjoyed?
Nobody's perfect and I stand accused
For lack of a better word, and that's my best excuse

[Part V: Tales of another broken home]

To live and not to breathe
Is to die in tragedy
To run, to run away
To find what you believe
And I leave behind
This hurricane of fucking lies
I lost my faith to this
This town that don't exist

So I run
I run away
To the light of masochists
And I leave behind
This hurricane of fucking lies
And I walked this line
A million and one fucking times
But not this time

I don't feel any shame
I wont apologize

When there ain't nowhere you can go
Running away from pain
When you've been victimized
Tales from another broken home

"I also noticed the guitar solo on Tales of a Broken Home" is a straight rip of Johnny Cash's, "Ring of Fire" by way of Social Distortion."

Yeah. That's not coincidental. Notice how it's near where Billie Joe sings "And I walked this line". "Walk the Line" is a Johnny Cash song about struggling with self -- a lot like this song. Ring of Fire is also about the same topic. I think it's a neat tribute.

I don't know if the solo is more like the Social D version or Cash's. I'd have to listen to them side by side, but I picked it up without remembering Social D's rendition very well.

What an awesome album! You can listen over and over and pick up new things every time.

Although I prefer the Dookie songs to some their latest stuff, one has to applaud their growth; especially when it surfaces on songs like this one, 'American Idiot,' and 'Wake me up when September ends.' Anyway; every band is influenced somehow; there's no such thing as not being influenced even if bands sound original... originality is turning your influences into something fresh, not not being influenced at all. And I think it shows that their influences (and, in turn, their writing,) have grown larger and have sophisticated.

I always thought that this song set the scene of the story. The first part introduces you to the character, Jesus Of Surburbia, then City Of The Damned introduces the setting. I Don't Care is his outer attitude, but Dearly Beloved is how he really feels, and Another Broken Home is what he does about it. Once again though, that's just what I think. That's one of the best parts of the story, it's really open to interpretation. And Billie Joe can transmit emotion with his voice so well, and he's created such a great protagonist in Jesus.

i've not been a green day fan for all that long, but when going going back and listening to dookie and insomniac it was all very repetitive musically, lyrically immature and irrelevant to the real world. That's not to say it wasn't good, it was more "we'll be as we are for the sake of being as we are." which is cool, but Nimrod was their first album to really be artistically acceptable, Warning followed the trend and now the group has matured in their music.

They realized, i am sure, that this album would not be a hit with the old berkley pothead ring (please note that i'm using the phrase "berkley pothead ring" as reference to the group's beginnings, not necesarily all who listened to insomniac.) But, they really didn't care. Oh, for those of you who haven't caught it, this album is strenghtened by tons of allusions to other artists. Esp in this song, including the johnny cash riff. But, the most blatant that none of you have picked up on is the chorus of "I don't care, if you don't" is strait from a number in "Jesus Christ, Superstar."

this is an incredible album that stands up to artistic criticism and has very little to do with politics

City of the Damned reminds me of the Simon and Garfunkle song, "The Sound of Silence." There's a lyric that says, "The words of the prophets are written on subway walls / And tenement halls." The whole song is about a guy watching the world around him crumbling to doom and the people who are apathetic to his help and guidance, much like our hero in this song. You might find more similarities if you look the song up.

American Idoit is Political. It is agaisnt Bush. I saw it on VH1. They said so. Green Day thought they could make a difference in the election. E.G. "red neck agenda".

This song is interesting. Very good, it took me long enough to get it though.

There past albums were ok. But all of them are based on smoking and sex. They ligthen up on drugs a bit in this album (wasn't main point).

My list for top Green Day songs.

1.Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)
2. Jesus of Suburbia
3.Blvd. of Broken Dreams
4. American Idoit

Good Riddance beats all there other songs by a mile. Fantastic song. One of the best of all time. Jesus of Suburbia, is great lyrics. Blvd. of Broken Dreams is fantastic. American Idoit, is strong, has a good meaning, but is not the great musically.

eyesman_2008 has the whole CDs meaning fucked. The CD is anti-Bush. And, by the way eyesman, Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day's guitarist) said "this song is about how much I fucking hate George fucking W. Bush" not about the Jesus of Suburbia. The song Jesus of Suburbia is about George W. Bush! The idea is that he's a false Jesus. His land of make-believe that don't believe in him. As for the song City of the Damned, that's about what America has become since the American Idiot (George Bush) was elected. The song St. Jimmy is about Bush (or, if you prefer), someone who is rebelling against George in any way he can. (suicide commando, drugs, etc.) As for Letterbomb, that's also about Bush. Whatsername is one of the few songs on the CD that is not about Bush. All it is is a classic love song. And as for She's A Rebel, that's about a girl who's rebelling against Bush. And Blvd. of Broken Dreams is about some guy who is alone in the world, and is really depressed.

The songs that aren't about Bush are as follows:

Whatsername
Extraordinary Girl
Blvd. of Broken Dreams

See you at the show

Sorry to bother you again, but SwordofHope, Green Day doesn't have songs that wollow (funny word, huh?) in drugs and sex. Good Riddance, Minority, Warning, etc. All of those aren't about drugs. None of their songs are.

See you at the show

I actually only became a (huge) Green Day fan after hearing American Idiot. I hope to buy their previous albums and listen shortly, but until then all I can compare them to only their new album. I think their CD is absolutly amazing and interesting. I don't think I completely believe that most are about Bush though, although I could relate if they were since he truely is the American Idot. Anyway, the story line is confusing but seems so worth my time to figure out, ever since I got their album I couldn't stop listening to it!!! Additionaly, I am INLOVE with Billie Joe.

BJlove,

You shouldn't be in love wih Bllie Joe Armstrong. He's ugly as hell, and I'm so much sexier (unfortunatly, this is not true. I am, however, very cool, but not really ugly. I also used to talk about myself a lot).

He's also married.

See you at the show.

you know lucky_guess_rox, it is a concept album. it has a plot, which doesn't really have that much to do with hating bush specifically, even though there is some of that there.

lucky_guess_rox,
he isnt that hot is he..except being a rocker makes him incredibly sexy. and in his 2 new videos he's actually VERY hot (the dark hair/eyeliner makes him very pretty-much better than the style he had when younger).

and as for being married, that never stopped me from obsessing over J.Depp

But don't worry, seeing as how you supported a president who sent over a 1,000 American soldiers and god knows how many innocent iraqis to their death, fucked up the economy beyond repair and clearly lost all three debates to John Kerry, I wouldn't expect you to know what 'rambamslam' was clearly talking about.

The american soldiers get payed, they volunteered, they wanted to be in the army. An army going to war, who woulda thought?

Under Saddam over 290,000 iraqi people were killed, along with the genocied of the kurds. Thats 200 people a week for 23 years. Collateral is hardly a large price for the genocide that was happening. And bush now has a spending plan that will cut the countrys defecit in half in only 5 years. The debate thing is just your opinion, not a fact that you can use in making a point.

First comment for me on this site...

Anyway... Some people say that they don't like greenday anymore because they changed from their old selves. In my perspective they are the best band because this is my first album i ever listened to. Put it this way... maybe you don't like them any more because you hate to hear your favorite band change their style.

About the whole coppying bands thing... I think it's great that you get to hear great guitar solos and music styles merged together as one album. It's deffinetly original because they are the only ones that did it (i think... I'm only 12 and wouldn't know about some 50 year old band who coppied other songs as one.) They also do it greatly and converge the styles into punk.

I love how a lot of the songs in the album merge into eachother so smoothly. A lot of typing
P.S the date is wrong because if the last comment was posted on 12/30/2004, and todays the 29, (i looked on my calender)...

One thing about the whole plot of the song... I looked at the lyrics to part four of homecoming... if everyone thinks that jesus of sub. and st. jimmy is the same person, then y does it say " i got a kid in newyork, i got a kid in the bay"? if you read the lyrics to part one of the song then you will see that st. jimmy "shot his brains out in the bay". I think that the jesus of suburbia is the one in newyork. The album is so confusing to me. If someone else is thinking the same way as me, please post.

I wish one of the guys in greenday would tell us the whole meaning of the album.

hey...puddrulesall..... hell yeah this album is confusing. lol. to me it seems like Green Day is against jesus or just duznt believe that he died. because they say "no one ever died for my sins in hell as far as i can tell." and just the stuff he says about the Jesus of Suburbia. some people think that jesus of suburbia and jimmy are the same person. some people sed its his enemy and some sed its his alter ego. i honestly dont know cuz its so dam confusing.
