every night stopping
it's raining
scary oh
so rage you again
your
on fire
i one decide to run out
oh they got off you did
wonder where you say you knew

sugar ain't poison
but sugar will kill you
it's too much of a good thing
maybe not so

i wasn't somebody
no hand out
i give you
i stare back and
gonna let you out
i wonder what you
all of sad you knew

sugar ain't poison
but sugar will kill you
too much of a good thing
maybe not so

you did what you thought was fitting baby
dreams about oh what is sunning you
oh baby
i hung up my package
never no never you knew

sugar ain't poison
but sugar will kill you
too much of a good thing
maybe not so sweet

General Comment:my favorite version is the one on the stand up bonus disc.

    . . .

lonely as I could have been waiting
to hear something form inside of you
but I hear nothing so I
went looking for myself and found
a couple of things for myself
    maybe not, so what
still I was searching all by myself
    I wonder if you knew...

    . . .

stumbling in, late at night I must have
    lost track of time
at the bottom of the last bottle I was swallowing
    maybe not, but I was
    feeling good, good, good.

    saw this,
    found it all by myself
    came back, you was crazy
    [?] under this for myself
I wonder if even you knew...

One of those songs I can listen to over and over and over again. I actually missed the Ford show by a week, I was so mad - especially when I found out this song was back. grr. oh well.

Great song. General feeling for me is that it's pretty much resigning yourself to staying cyclically in a doomed relationship where the other doesn't know who you really are or what you've been up to. Not necessarily cheating or anything, just lives separate to the point where you're not looking for meaning in it together anymore.

    General Comment:dmbalmanac.com/…

There's the directory for alternate lyrics, including 08 versions. IMHO, the comeback debut (7/9/08, Ford Ampitheatre, Tampa FL) was the best this year so far. Gorge version was okay too.

As I listen to this more and more, I come to realize how brilliant it is musically, but I also find that this is one of the few songs where I can't really take Dave's vocals. Just don't like his stylings on it at all and I'd like to cover it with something just as fluid but a little less...messy. You know, coherent and shit.

Great song, glad they brought it back.

General Comment:Such a unique song in it's structure. Very very interesting to listen to, hypnotic, then bittersweet, then hopeful, then just pensive, and back again.

I'll post the 2008 style of lyrics eventually, but right now there isn't a recording out there where Dave is coherent enough to understand. To be expected, hahaha. But still, so so great musically.

General Comment:i think giffdud is right
    in another version it says

one day i came in stumbling
thought i caught you hanging the phone
    i wonder
    no no
    i was just sitting
and now you got me paranoid
or so and liquored up on myself
    to hold on to you
i dont mean to throw my hands on myself
    but you fell oh
    you knew

its talkin about how you think you have something good with someone and you dont even know what they're doing behind ur back
you think you have something good but its not what you think

General Comment:Here are the lyrics as best as i could get from the Golden Gate Park Concert cd with Santana:

    so what is it?
    in the middle of this
came in to save us oh
red was staining and covering, oh I wonder
    called all this for myself
    wonder if you knew

    sugar ain't poison
    but sugar will kill you
too much of a good thing
    maybe not so sweet

what do you think about that?

I came in, maybe, bit too late
and stinking, you said of something holy
and either way to solve this, really matters oh drumming out
try to find for myself whatever come rain
empty space, I fell for myself
    I wonder if you knew

    sugar ain't poison
    but sugar will kill you
too much of a good thing
    maybe not so sweet

what do you know about that?

And all of a sudden you were screaming
came scratching in, love, all of these
Oh, I thought, must be dreaming
it's not like you but oh then
I've done it all by myself
still it seems surprising, oh then
    broke the wall by myself
    still wonder how you knew

    sugar ain't poison
    but sugar will kill you
too much of a good thing
    maybe not so sweet

I think it has to do with relationships. Too much of a good thing maybe not so sweet is realizing that what he thought would make him happy (or make the other person happy) is really not what that person needed.

General Comment:this song is about truth...
sugar = truth (truth about who God is and Who man is)
when we receive this truth it comes in two parts.
wisdom and understanding. wisdom comes by way of reveation via God in dreams and visions within our spirit.
understanding comes through our day to day living out the wisdom to create knowledge or truth.

some peple are greedy they grab all they can get but in the end it brings them nothing but confusion.

dave is saying being too greedy for Gods truth will bring you a tummy ache. too much is not a good thing to most. heres a sample.
    lets say God loves everyone.
but the same people who preach this form of truth will also say their going to heaven while 99% of Gods creation will Go To Hell..confusing right! which means what they understand as truth means nothing. and will only bring them death to those ideas they hold as truth.
a key is a house divided falls. two confusing ideas can only lead to doubt. which isnt truth.

too much is about stealing truth. antichrists steal Gods truth only to find out they never understood it. they become inraged when others defy their newly found understanding. the "sugar" they consumed is consuming them.
