We're gonna die like this you know, miserable and old,
Really gotta hand it to you, really gotta hand it to you,
Are you positive, absolutely sure, well just get dressed don't do this,
Spending nights late listening to Miles Davis set that makes you want to fall in love,
Or be smart enough to keep your distance, you can't decide, you can't decide

We're gonna die like this you know, miserable and old,
Really gotta hand it to you, really gotta hand it to you,
(well just so you know) are you positive, (when we get home),
Absolutely sure, (whatever) just get dressed don't do this (whatever)
Just get dressed don't do this

Its a long way back south (and to where I belong),
Well yeah you've been there once or twice (and you still don't like it),
I say you just never gave it a chance (well give me a chance, give me a chance),
Besides did you ever stop to think that we can keep this up living like thieves
(but you can't decide) you can't decide (no you can't decide) well you can't decide

We're gonna die like this you know, miserable and old,
Really gotta hand it to you, really gotta hand it to you,
(well just so you know) are you positive, (when we get home),
Absolutely sure, (whatever) just get dressed don't do this (whatever)
Just get dressed don't do this, now.

Are you positive? Absolutely sure? Are you positive?

We're gonna die like this you know,
Miserable and oh, really gotta hand it to you, really gotta hand it to you,
(well just so you know) are you positive, (when we get home),
Absolutely sure, (whatever) just get dressed don't do this (whatever)
Just get dressed don't do this

(well just so you know) are you positive, (when we get home),
Absolutely sure, (whatever) just get dressed don't do this (whatever)
Just get dressed don't do this

(well just so you know) are you positive, (when we get home),
Absolutely sure, (whatever) just get dressed don't do this (whatever)
Just get dressed don't do this

General Comment:I am surprised so many people thing this song is about sex. To me it seemed blatantly obvious that it was about a couple who are living "decently", but not happily, for whatever reason. They haven't got anything except each other, and they know they are going to die "like this, miserable and old", so the girl is suggesting that if they know they are going to die miserable, they may as well end their lives now rather than endure it for its whole length.

To this the guy asks "are you absolutely sure?" because even though he knows that it is true, and that it would be easier just to die now, suicide is a big step, and he can't throw away everything without being sure that it's the best thing to do. He doesn't know if it IS for the best, so he implores the girl to get dressed and ready for the day.

The other lyrics talk about their personal life together, how they are together but not really in love or connected, and they know they are ruining each other's lives (are you smart enough to keep your dfistance?) but they are so indecisive they can't decide on anything, whether breaking up or killing themselves (this is obviously not the first time they have talked about it). And it's that indecision that keeps them leading miserable lives, but that's better than taking the big step of suicide, because they can "keep it up living like this".

I also thought the title was a reference to using a gun for the suicide, but it is number 5 instead of number 1 because they are uncertain and slow about it, and may not even do it. I didn't know the original "with a bullet" idiom or the High Fidelity quote either, so maybe it might have something to do with "not being able to move up the ladder" "going nowhere" etc.

Or maybe it is just about sex or a break-up/cheating. Either way I am going to keep interpreting the song as I like to interpret it, even if it is wrong.

General Comment:I may not know much, or the meaning of this song.
But i do know for sure where the title came from.
"number five with a bullet" quoted from the movie high fidelity.
Quote was in reference to the number five on his "top five list of all time break ups"
maybe this will be irrelevant, give new meaning to the song, or just originate the song title.
    Either way hope it's helpful.
By the way high fidelity Is a must see!

General Comment:Wow, thank you Phoebo for not being a complete idiot. I've read that Adam was born in Alabama. So yeah, for you morons that think it's about sex, that just doesn't make sense. Haha, Maybe you should try to think about stuff a little more.

General Comment:I think the title allusion should lead us to a breakup. The breakup then that I've always seen in this song is the one that is so typically the result of the defect of women. I suppose it's unfair to call it a defect (it sure feels like it) but so often they can't decide whether they want some kind of a long term relationship or a straight up breakup. (Said it makes you want to fall in love; or be smart enough to keep your distance)

The scene I see then is Adam and this woman getting ready to go to (let's say) the Grammys. He's already ready, but she (even though she still hasn't even decided what to wear) brings this up. The inevitable fight begins and he begs "just get dressed, don't do this." She argues long term relationships don't work. He answers "well yeah you've been there once or twice; but I say you just never gave it a chance. (Give me a chance)" and why does it have to be one or the other, things are GREAT RIGHT NOW, "Besides did you ever stop to think that we could keep this up, living like thieves?" She gets mad and says they're breaking up and he asks "are you positive, absolutely sure?" because he knows she will change her mind another dozen times at least, she hasn't really decided anything. (But you can't decide, no you can't decide)

So they eventually leave and he knows that making it with this woman is "hit or miss" and "in spite" he's not going to let fate, if you will, decide. He tells her "just so you know, when we get home we're through."

General Comment:watch 'High Fidelity' starring John Cusack.
it could be loosely based on that movie.

Considering the situation, the feelings and tension,
and him using that line in a scene.

Bands using quotes, titles of books, movies, or other literature is common. especially bukowski's writing.

General Comment:This song analysis is slightly tongue in cheek so don't flame me

    It's about HIV.

"are you positive" - HIV positive
"just get dressed don't do this" - No one wants to be given HIV
"really gotta hand it to you" - Really got hand HIV to you
"gonna die like this, miserable and old" They have HIV, they're gonna die. The "old" is ironic

General Comment:i think some of these comments are so shallow.
its not about getting dressed so you dont have sex. at all.
i at first thought it was about another outlook at love.
misrable and old..instead dying in love and not alone.
the girl he is singing to is absolutly confused of whether or not love is a good thing or a bad thing.
he's trying to talk he into love, with him.
but she cant decide. shes making it bad for him.. thats what the chorus is saying. is she sure she doesnt want this? is she possitive? and if she keeps it up and never tries then this is how it will always be. miserable.
i love this song its my favorite. thats my outlook on the song and even if im off.. its not about sex.

General Comment:Well, for a first glance.

    Without getting so technical..

I think it's about a relationship in which the girl is insecure, confused about she wants, and this frustrates Adam.

    As for the verse..
"It's a long way back south
    (and to where I belong)
Well yeah you've been there once or twice
(and you still dont like it)
I say you just never gave it a chance
(well give me a chance, give me a chance)"

    I think this should just be taken literally, not sexually.. Adam's from the South, born in Sheffield, Alabama.. and he's saying;

"Well, you've been there once or twice and you still don't like it."

So, he's saying 'give it a chance, give me a chance'.. perhaps to be more than what they currently are, which seems to be a rather unstable relationship, living the "high life".. hence, "like thieves".

Then, he's saying that they can't live like that forever, like living.. but living miserably. So he's questioning what she really wants for herself, and for their relationship.. yeah.

    but yeah, just my opinion.
