Lyrics for I Never Told You What I Do For a Living as interpreted by adrianelee

I Never Told You What I Do For a Living Lyrics
Stay out of the light.
All the photographs that I gave you
you could say a prayer for me too.
But just get in line and I'll grieve you
Can i meet you, alone?
Another night and ill see you.
Another night and ill be you.
Some other way to continue.

To hide my face.

Another knife in my hands,
a stain that never comes off the sheets
Clean me off
I'm so dirty babe,
the kind of dirty where the water never cleans off the clothes.
I keep a book of the names and those
only goes so far to bury them
So deep and down we go

Touched by angels so I fall out of grace
I did it all so maybe I'd live this every day

Another knife in my hands,
a stain that never comes off the sheets
Clean me off
I'm so dirty babe
It ain't the money and it sure as hell ain't just for the fame.
It's for the bodies I claim and lose
Only goes so far to bury them
So deep and down we go
Down

And down we go
And down we go
And down we go
And we all fall down

[screaming]
I tried!
I tried!

And we'll all dance alone to the tune of your death.
We'll love again, we'll laugh again
and it's better off this way.

And never again, and never again
They gave us two shots to the back of the head
and we're all dead now.

Well never again, and never again
They gave us two shots to the back of the head
and we're all dead now.

I tried, one more night, one more night
Well, I'm laughin', cryin', laughin' out loud
I tried,
Well i tried,
Well i tried,

'Cause i tried
but i lied

I tried
I tried
I tried

And we'll love again and we'll laugh again
We'll try again and we'll dance again
and it's better off this way.
So much better off this way.
I can't clean the blood off the sheets in my bed

Never again, and never again
They gave us two shots to the back of the head
and we're all dead now.

im pretty sure no1 has noticed this yet, but another sign from the lyrics that the writer(gerard in this case) is the devil is here: "Touched by angels so I fall out of place"

bein angels r good and 'godly' then touched by angels for a devil, will, put him out of place...

Very good song! Probably my fave on the album! It is an excellent way to sum up the whole meaning of the album. Its like looking through the eyes of a killer which i have never done through a song! (which i have never done EVER just incase you were wonderin!) Definetly a first to do so......Bloody excellent! Get it? lol

Oh, I bloody love this song. Ever since I heard it on the "House of Wax" soundtrack, I've been in love. MCR knows how to make some wicked music.

I have found out many things about MCR in the Past few days, and I must say, that if anything their Lyrics/songs make for some interesting stories to be told...

This is what I posted on the letssingit.com board before I read any of this, and before I knew so much more about the album...

"Touched by angels though, I fall out of grace
I did it all so maybe I’d live this everyday"

He's talking about everything the band went thru to get to this point...

and "It ain't the money
And it sure as hell ain't just for the fame
It’s for the bodies I claim and those"
It's saying that this isn't for money or fame, but for the fans (bodies) they get...

and
"And we'll all dance alone to the tune of your death
We’ll love again, we'll laugh again
And it's better off this way"

It's like he's trying to say that he knows they eventually their music will fade out only to be replaced by a new sound...

Does that make sense to anyone... or am I just way to outside the box...

Since then I have found out SO MUCH ABOUT this album, and It went from being a good Album to a to a FUCKING GREAT album...

OK... so I think I got the Basic story line down ***this is just my take on it from what I know so far, and is very subject to change***... (Since this is sort of what I do for a living)

Helena- Helena Has dual meanings... First it’s about His Grandmother, sort of a tribute, but it is also almost like a Foreshadow of what’s to come. This is where it all starts... Their funeral. Their? Yes... The song says, "Can you hear me?
Are you near me?
Can we pretend
to leave again
And meet again
When both our cars collide?"
So is this How they met, or... Do both their cars colliding mean both Hearses meeting at the cemetery together?
This is also sort of the first stage to the 5 stages of death... Denial. He is remembering good times, and doesn't want to leave them... "Things are better if I stay."

Give em Hell Kid- This is sort of like a high speed flashback... The first line sets the mood for the whole song, but the end of the first stanza asks if they can settle up the score... like something went wrong or the drugs they were doing were bad, like that something happened at the "Murder scene." This story is a common one. If you don't believe me, check out this Conscience (wow I can't spell) The Movie Hang em High (sound formilier) stars Clint Eastwood, where he is wrongly hung by a group of men, but he survives the hanging, and proceeds to bring Justice to all those men. Or the Original Comic Batman/new Batman movie... Some1 wrongs him and he vows to settle up the score. This Song also shows some signs of the second stage... Anger...

To the end- This song is where she is in a Coma state, and he asks her to marry him... and He doesn't have many friends, because he has killed them...

You Know What They Do to Guys Like Us in Prison-
This song is after He has killed them and what he goes through because of it... He talks of being held up in a restaurant, and spending time in prison, and he says that no one has known the troubles he's seen... This song is a transition song...

"And then he says how we're just two men, as God had made us
Well I can't, well I can
Too much, too late, or just not enough of this
Pain in my heart for your dying wish
I kiss your lips again"

Here is his first contact with the Devil (possibly a cellmate?)... And Him debating it... Since The Devil was Created by god, but cast from heaven... as the bible says anyways. He is talking of her last wish... This is the Third Stage of death... Bargaining

I'm not ok (I Promise) - This is the Bargaining didn't work FLIP OUT song... He starts talking about random moments when she did things, or trips they had together, and how she could read him, but that he was so worn down by it... and then he goes into Uber Manic flip out mode... "But you really need to listen to me Because I'm telling you the truth I mean this, I'm okay (Trust me) I'm not okay I'm not okay Well, I'm not okay I'm not o-fucking-kay I'm not okay I'm not okay (Okay)”

The ghost of you -

This song is about Him losing her... He is past the manic flip out mode and is now in the manic depressive mode... and you know what Depression is... The Fourth stage of death... This is one of my Favorite songs, because of the emotion he puts into it. This is the song where he wants to die... Where he wants to fall... Depression.

The Jetset life is gonna kill you.
OK, First of all, I would like to thank Chingy69 for this... You’re awesome
"I totally agree with it being about using meth. But to me it is more then that, it tells a story. I'll do a line by line.

"Gaze into her killing jar
I'd sometimes stare for hours.
She even poked the holes so I can breathe."

This is my favorite stanza! Awesome analogy. His girlfriend is addicted. And while she is under the control of meth, he is under her control.

"She bought the last line.
I'm just the worst kind.
Of guy to argue.
With what you might find.
And for the last night I lie.
Could I lie with you?"

Right along with it, he is under her influence. He's a guy who has fallen for her and will do anything for her. Even live the life she lives.

"Alright...
Give up. Get down.
It’s just the hardest part of living.
She wants. It all to come down this time."

It's all about the never-ending cycle of meth. The snake eating itself. You get up and it wears off. Then you take another hit. Up! ... Then down... you get the picture. But this time on her downer she has become especially destructive.

It gives the weak flight.
It gives the blind sight.
Until the cops come.
Or by the last light.
And for the last night I lie.
Could I lie next to you?

Drugs not only give you a euphoric feeling, (and this definitely depends on how you use it), but it also gives you a glimpse into your future self. Part of the emotion and high that stems from drugs really stems from you. That's why it affects everyone in a different way. You've heard the term high on life? Well, that is true. There is a way you can really find to be naturally high. And let me tell you, its better then a drug."

This is what is Referred to in the first stanza of 'Give em Hell kid" Ephedrine is an upper, and has many of the same effects on you as Meth (aka Speed) "She bought the last line I'm just the worst kind Of guy to argue With what you might find And for the last night I lie Could I lie with you?" This song is Acceptance... the Final stage. He finally accepts that it that she did this to her self, and that he is ready to let her go... To pull the plug, to take it all down... He explains that she is gone, and what the drugs did..."Lost in the prescription she's got something else in mind, Check into the Hotel Bella Muerte (Beautiful Death), it gives the weak flight; it gives the blind sight, until the cops come." He accepts that she is gone (not dead, but gone to the drugs) and now It's his turn to, in a since, die, to get her back... Acceptance. The Final stage of death.
Interlude-

"Since we talked alone
Come angels of the unknown
Come angels of unknown"
*I'm not sure if these are the Correct Lyrics*

Prosaic said: "I think the song has a double meaning. One being the tie-in to the "concept." The other is in reference to the Way's grandmother who died." I agree with him, but as far as how it ties into the concept... I sort of Agree with Maxcalifornia who said "hmm, a shot in the dark maybe, but maybe the "come of angels unknown" means something to do with the angels not being from heaven (the known), but from hell. So it's about his (lonely) journey to hell. Plus it’s pretty morbid, and kind of plodding, so I think yeh, it’s about his lonely journey, or maybe after the journey, and he's pleading for his biatch back."
This interlude transitions from the end of death (aka the drugs), to his deal with the devil. and MexCalifornia explained it as good as I could in...
Thanks for the Venom-
This is perhaps the coolest song on the album, and this is probably where I'm going to lose the people I haven't lost already. This is the song that sets the tone for the second part of the album... This is his deal with the devil, but the devil is disguised as her or is her. "Sister, I'm not much a poet, but a criminal And you never had a chance Love it, or leave it, you can't understand A pretty face, but you do so carry on And on and on I wouldn't front the scene if you paid me I'm just the way that the doctor made me On and on and on and on Love is the red of the rose on your coffin door What's life like, bleeding on the floor, the floor, the floor" He tells her/the devil that she never had a chance, says that she has a pretty face, but that she talks to much, but this is where his idea comes...He tells her that he will make all the people that made her sick give him their all their poisons, all their pills... and their hearts (aka their lives.) I think he is telling her... If this is what you want to do... then fire at will. Not at Him, but at all those other people. Those 1000 evil men that you hear so much about. Old School Vigilante Justice Style... Which brings about...
Hang em High-This is the quintessential Flip out and Kill shit song... As I said before "Hang em High the Movie, is basically what this song is all about, just Imagine Bonnie and Clyde instead of Eastwood...

Wait until it fades to black
Ride into the sunset
Would I lie to you?
Well I've got something to say
Grab your six-gun from your back
Throttle the ignition
Would I die for you?
Well here's your answer in spades

Shotgun sinner, wild-eyed jokers
Got you in my sights
Gun it while I'm holding on

After all is said and done
Climb out from the pine box
Well I'm asking you
Cause she's got nothing to say
The angels just cut out her tongue
Call her black Mariah
Would I lie to you?
That girl's not right in the brain

Mass convulsions
Strike the choir
By the grace of God
Gun it while I'm holding on

But, don't stop if I fall
And don't look back
Oh baby, don't stop
Bury me and fade to black

She won't stop me
Put it down

She won't stop me
Put it down

So get your gun
And leave me by the door

Don't stop if I fall
And don't look back
Oh baby don’t stop
Bury me and fade to black

This song is about them killing people. He describes his love for her and what he would do for her, and describes a few of the people he killed....

This is not a Fashion statement; it’s a Fucking Death wish-

More Continual KICKING OF ASS!!! This Song is a more Violent version of Hang em High. With Hang em High they were worried about dying or being caught, but not anymore... They Are Just Painting the town red now... For what you did to me and what I'll do to you you get, what everyone else gets you get a lifetime!! This song tells about them getting stabbed in the back and about all so called "Friends" that got them addicted... that they are killing. I will avenge my ghost, taking back the life you stole, this hole you put me in wasn't deep enough.... and The Line that Sums up this WHOLE song...
You're running out of places to hide from me when you go, just know that I will remember you.
Cemetery Drive- This is kind of the Precursor to I never told you what I do for a living... This song tells about their Consciences... Some what... I like what Blink1824 said, even though I don't Completely agree with it, actually I don't know why I'm putting it in here, I just think it sounds cool :)
"This song is awesome. I just got this CD. I love My Chemical Romance. It's interesting to see others' opinions and perceptions of the song.
I think that this song is how it generally sounds and looks.
Gerard is having an affair with a married woman. She cannot handle being in love w/ both of them/breaking up w/ Gerard and whatever else is going on in her life. Obviously, she opts to suicide. "Singing songs that make you slit your wrists" I think that she was influenced through songs to do this, just by adding more pain to her life. It might have given her more incentive to get it over w/. "In a dress your husband hates" This is showing to me that she wanted to wear whatever she wanted when she died and her husband couldn't do anything about it. "Where they found us drinking by the mausoleum door" I think that he was so depressed that he was drinking by the cemetery mausoleum, realizing that she'd done it because of him. I think he's trying to make the point that because of losing her, he's now contemplating suicide himself. Saying that, "It isn't that much fun, staring down a loaded gun". "The collision of your kiss that made it so hard" I think is saying that it was so hard to let her go and maybe not just by death. They may have broken up before she committed suicide and they had one last kiss before they decided to never see each other again. "Did you get what you deserve? Is this what you always want me for?" I think he's asking her if she got what she deserved: dying. I think they both realized that the affair was wrong and she had to pay the price for it, since she had a husband. I think he was asking her if all she wanted him to do was cry over her. "Lay down, way down. Way down, way down". I think he was trying to lay/bury his feelings down w/ her so he didn't have to deal w/ the pain anymore.

MCR rocks!!

-Blink1824"
It is a good opinion, but doesn't fit into my tale at al... Is that bad? lol. So I think that this is still a normal thing for them... They get UP on something and still do random things like slit their wrists, or try and cut their faces off. (Listen to Bury Me in Black to get that reference. The special Track on the Japanese Release.) Ahh screw it... here the Lyrics:
"I said, we'll drown ourselves in misery tonight
I lied; you've worn out all your dancing shoes this time

Just give us war, worn lipstick by the door if I inflame

These eyes have had too much to drink again tonight
Black skies, we'll douse ourselves in high explosive light

Just give us war; I've been calling you all week
For my shotgun

Pick up the phone
Pick up the phone fucker

I wanna see what you're insides look like
I bet you're not fucking pretty on the inside
I wanna see what you're insides look like
I wanna see em

Well you don't say
And well I can explain what happened to my face
Late last night
I'm sleepin next to pools in vacant alleyways
And what I'm going through, shot lip-gloss through my veins
And when I can't complain
With the falling rain

Come on!

I wanna save your heart
I wanna see what your insides may be"

OK!!! So, after that heartwarming little number... We have...

Never Told You What I Do For a Living-
This is the Wrap up song... The song that ends the story, that puts a cap (much pun intended) onto their lives... This whole Song is about addiction... not of the drugs but of the killing... They are addicted to the thrill of it... and then... Either they die somehow (I like to Imagine it was Ninjas with Poison blowguns :))... or they kill the last that their is to kill... Another take on this song so the take that I started this little adventure with...

Touched by angels though, I fall out of grace

So that begs the Question... does "Bury me in Black" come before "I never Told you what I do for a Living..." or after? Depending on what you think changes the story I have weaved...

I know Most of You that actually took the time to read this will either think it was great or BS, but this is what Boredom and Sleep deprivation spawns... Please do not take any of this to seriously, I am not in MCR so I do not know the true storyline, but I would like to think that this is at least a tad bit of one possibility...

lol Muse... Computer shorthand FTW... and I was really bored and sleep deprivaded... and I was reading what all these people were writing about the different songs, and How some were really awesome and some others were totally off base... This is just kinda How I saw everything play out in my mind though... Like From a Screen Writers point of view... (It's a side effect of being an actor/drama person) I swear, when I was typing it, I felt like only 45 to 50 minutes had pasted... cause I already kinda had the storyline and was just making changes as I read more good Ideas and such... It wasn't just my idea, but a torrent of great ideas from tons of people...

I'm seriously thinking about Writing a screenplay to this, With a shitload of corrections of course... (That was just like a stream of conciesness roughdraft.)

Kinda Like "Requiem For a Dream." Meets "Bonnie and Clyde" and both of them have a carwreck into "Hang em High."

Sound good, lol?

I just saw the movie van helsing and in one part he talked about becoming the people that he had killed and i think the same thing might apply here(another night and I'll be you) he is saying that once he kills him he will be just as evil as his victim is. And he is also saying that by killing the victims he will be reunited with his lover and that its better that way so it makes it worth what he has to do. I might be wrong but it makes sense to me.

i fucking LOVE this song!!!!!!! im actually listening to it now...
anyway, i think this is def. one of the songs thats really concept (not all the songs are but this one is FOR SURE, if its not...then HOLY SHIT)

"and down we go"...he sounds so great when he says that (just thought id add that since i just heard it)

fuck, gerard has such an incredible voice, i know everyone says that but shit, its so true, its so powerful, he uses it SO AMAZINGLY.

the drumming and guitar is also amazing, esp in this song...

anyway, cheers all rockers...

I agree with what some of you guys are saying. I think that the song relates to the concept of the 1000 bad men to get his wife back. By disecting certain parts of the song I come to this conclusion.

'you could say a prayer for me too.
But just get in line and i'll grieve you.'

This part is the guy saying that he wants his wife to pray for his unclean soul, the soul that is killing 1000 men. He's also saying he would mourn her death but he's killed so many others he's spending pretty much all the time grieving, wracked by guilt by what he has done.

'Another night and ill see you.
Another night and ill be you.
Some other way to continue.'

The way this part is sang kinda makes me think it's always another day, another night, it's a neverending cycle. Just another night and he'll get to be with his wife, but 'another' never comes. Also, he's saying that he wishes there was some other way he could get to her without having to kill all the people. He wishes there were another way.

'Another knife in my hands,
a stain that never comes off the sheets
Clean me off
I'm so dirty babe,
the kind of dirty where the water never cleans off the clothes.
I keep a book of the names and those
only goes so far to bury them
So deep in town we go.'

This part shows how wracked with guilt he is. The neverending cycle continues as he admits he cannot clean himself of the blood on his hands by killing all these people. He keeps names and this shows he cannot mindlessly kill, each kill is affecting him.

'I tried, one more night, one more night
well I'm laughin', cryin', laughin'
I tried,
Well i tried,
Well i tried,'

This part is him apologizing to his wife. He tried to reunite them but in the end, he can't go through with all the murders. They are causing him to lose his mind he's laughing and crying and can't regain a sense of normality. He tried to push himself 'one more night' just one more night, one more murder, but in the end he cannot deal with it.

'And we'll love again and we'll laugh again
We'll try again and we'll dance again
and it's better off this way.
So much better off this way.
I can't clean the blood off the sheets in my bed'

Someday he and his wife will be together and they shall celebrate. But not because he is going to kill all 1000 men. He's telling her this way is better, maybe someday we will be able to laugh and cry and be together, but for now, it's better to stop this. Also, he admits again that his guilt is driving him mad, as he screams he can't get the blood off. (Anybody here a Macbeth fan?)

'Well never again and never again
They gave us two shots to the back of the head
And we're all dead now'

This final chant is his final message. I will not kill again, I refuse to do this any longer. We were killed, each of us, by a bullet in the back of the head. And now we are dead. There is nothing we can do about it. We are going to remain forever dead. (Ever play the MCR Sweet Revenge game...notice how the bad guy shoots them each in the back of the head....that's how they died in the first place)

Sorry this is so long but it's what I think. Hey, I maybe totally wrong but that's what I got from it.

UGH whoever put the lyrics on here messed this song allllll up. Nasty. God, people are ignorant. Do I have to put the real lyrics here? Cuz I will.

Stay out of the light
Or the photographs that I gave you
You can say a prayer if you need to
Or just get in line and I'll grieve you
Can I meet you, alone
Another night and I'll see you
Another night and I'll be you
Some other way to continue
To hide my face

Another knife in my hands
A stain that never comes off the sheets
Clean me off
I'm so dirty babe
The kind of dirty where the water never cleans off the clothes
I keep a book of the names and those

Only goes so far 'til you bury them
So deep and down we go

Touched by angels, though I fall out of grace
I did it all so maybe I'd live this every
Another knife in my hands
A stain that never comes off the sheets
Clean me off
I'm so dirty babe
It ain't the money and it sure as hell ain't just for the fame
It's for the bodies I claim and lose

Only goes so far 'til you bury them
So deep and down we go

Down

And down we go
And down we go
And down we go
And we all fall down

I tried
I tried

And we'll all dance alone to the tune of your death
We'll love again, we'll laugh again
And it's better off this way

And never again, and never again
They gave us two shots to the back of the head
And we're all dead now.

Well never again, and never again
They gave us two shots to the back of the head
And we're all dead now.

Well I tried
One more night
One more night
well I'm laughin' out, cryin' out, laughin' out loud
I tried, well I tried, well I tried,
'Cause I tried, but I lied
I lied

I tried
I tried
I tried

And we'll love again and we'll laugh again
We'll cry again and we'll dance again
And it's better off this way
So much better off this way
I can't clean the blood off the sheets in my bed

Well never again, and never again
They gave us two shots to the back of the head
And we're all dead now

yes, the game explains alot but i never got to the end of it (stuck at the second visit to the hospital)
the couple at the cathedral were killed, but the saint did all of the work, so he's got to have a role in this story. i say "Interlude" was his cue.

ps: shotgun sinner you got the right lyrics but the wrong attitude, no need to flame people for misheard lyrics.

I'm pretty sure the line "Another night and I'll be you" pertains to the 1000 evil men he's killed because killing the 1000 of them doesn't make him any better than they are. Too true. And I highly believe he gets jipped by the devil eventually, but in this song, he doesn't know it yet because he still thinks he and his lover will "laugh again", and "dance again".

i'm listening to this song, and i sort of saw it differently than before. to me it seems like he's a paid assassin (or not..) either way he's killing people. "another knife in my hands/ that stain that never comes off the sheets/ clean me off/ i'm so dirty babe!/ it ain't the money and it sure as hell ain't just for the fame/ it's all the bodies i claim" sort of gives a feel like this is clearly not for just for kicks. this i have always thought, but towards the end when it gets to "never again/ they gave us two shots to the back of ther head/ and we're all dead now" makes me think that perhaps he was caught some way or another and realizes that through killing so many people, he's become dead inside or lost his values or something.... anyway "and it's better off this way" is like now that he's been stopped, "dead", or however it happened, and his life isn't his anymore. maybe he realizes that that it's better he's been stopped....?
so what i said makes no sense. i just heard it and treid to capture how i saw it... and it didn't come out to clearly. oh well. sorry to butcher the song so much.

ok...what i think gerard has done is he has left the meaning up to whoever listens to it...to a certain extent. i think its more about what you get from it, and not neccisarily this part of the songs means this and stuff like that. i may be wrong but that's just what i think
