Lyrics for I Never Told You What I Do For a Living as interpreted by adrianelee

I Never Told You What I Do For a Living Lyrics
Stay out of the light.
All the photographs that I gave you
you could say a prayer for me too.
But just get in line and I'll grieve you
Can i meet you, alone?
Another night and ill see you.
Another night and ill be you.
Some other way to continue.

To hide my face.

Another knife in my hands,
a stain that never comes off the sheets
Clean me off
I'm so dirty babe,
the kind of dirty where the water never cleans off the clothes.
I keep a book of the names and those
only goes so far to bury them
So deep and down we go

Touched by angels so I fall out of grace
I did it all so maybe I'd live this every day

Another knife in my hands,
a stain that never comes off the sheets
Clean me off
I'm so dirty babe
It ain't the money and it sure as hell ain't just for the fame.
It's for the bodies I claim and lose
Only goes so far to bury them
So deep and down we go
Down

And down we go
And down we go
And down we go
And we all fall down

[screaming]
I tried!
I tried!

And we'll all dance alone to the tune of your death.
We'll love again, we'll laugh again
and it's better off this way.

And never again, and never again
They gave us two shots to the back of the head
and we're all dead now.

Well never again, and never again
They gave us two shots to the back of the head
and we're all dead now.

I tried, one more night, one more night
Well, I'm laughin', cryin', laughin' out loud
I tried,
Well i tried,
Well i tried,

'Cause i tried
but i lied

I tried
I tried
I tried

And we'll love again and we'll laugh again
We'll try again and we'll dance again
and it's better off this way.
So much better off this way.
I can't clean the blood off the sheets in my bed

Never again, and never again
They gave us two shots to the back of the head
and we're all dead now.

Yeah he probably was killed. And they Shouldnt have any thing else to say on the new album. Only in Three Cheers, Gerard sings about coming back from the dead.."and after all is said and done, climb out from the pine box.."-Hang 'Em High, maybe to finish what he started? But then that leaves the question..how could he have made a deal with the devil if he wasnt dead already? I dont know, just adding my two cents.

I think this adds great closure to the album, leaves you exausted almost. I love he screams "Well i'm Laughing, Crying, Laughing!" and how he sings "Well I tried" in agony, its as if he's pouring out his soul saying he tried and failed and he's begging for one more night he's dying taking two shots to the back of the head. I think at the end, he found her, and they both got killed, so "It's better off this way" as their both dead in hell together. i dunno, just my thoughts.

"they gave us two shots to the back of the head and we're all dead now" maybe he got all of the corpses and he was with her..."they gave US"...and then someone killed both of them and soon as they were reunited. probably satan...because you know only a dumbass would make a deal with satan...you can never trust him

HAHA I feel stupid. I heard a few lines and thought this song was for the fans or something.

"Another night and ill see you

...

It ain't the money and it sure as hell ain't just for the fame

It's for the bodies I claim"

Everyone else's interpretations make more sense. XD

this song is awesome. i think that gerard mighta done something cuz he says

"to hide my face
another knife in my hands
a stain that never comes off the sheets
clean me off oh so dirty babe
the kind of dirty where the water never
cleans off the clothes
i keep a book of the names and those
only go so far till we bury them"

okay, it sounds to me that he's making a deal with the devil (duh) and he killed someone, cuz he needs to hide his face and he's got a knife in his hands (u kno) and then he keeps a book of the names (yea, the devil does that) till we bury them (he's gonna bury them)

basically, all of mcr's songs are amazing, becuz they're all puzzles. you can't just assume what the songs are about, you have to go deep into what he's feeling. that's why i love them, becuz they're deep. and hot.

yea, i just realized that the person who gave in the lyrics, got a lot of stuff wrong (shame on you) here are the real lyrics:

stay out of the light
or the photographs that i gave you
you can say a prayer if you need to
or just get in line and i'll grieve you
can i meet you, alone
another night and i'll see you
another night and i'll be you
some other way to continue
to hide my face

[Chorus]
another knife in my hands
a stain that never comes off the sheets
clean me off
i'm so dirty babe
the kind of dirty where the water never cleans off the clothes
i keep a book of the names and those

only go so far 'til you bury them
so deep and down we go

touched by angels, though i fall out of grace
i did it all so maybe i'd live this everyday

and on and on.....

I had to listen to it a few times to get into it cause i thought it didn't fit at the end but now I think it's a good ending song. When he's singing a stain that never comes off, it seems like all the killing he's done is marked on his soul and he'll never be rid of it. He did all that stuff that he had to do but the ned is coming for him. They gave us two shots to the back of the head and we're all dead now, that's like the finale of it, where all of it is done, the job he had to do and all. That's what I get from it anyway.

This is by far my favorite song on this CD - it is an incredible mix of emotion - fighting aggression to heart wrenching screaming sadness...to me it is- to quote Frank - Beautifully Chaotic! I think it is the perfect way to end the CD.

I think the lyrics on here are alittle incorrect

"I keep a book of the names and those only go so far to bury them"

and

"It's for the bodies I claim and those only go so far to bury them"

In my opinion, I think what he's saying in each case, is that the Names and the Bodies of the people he's killed only go so far to bury them ( as in their souls ) so deeper down they go ( to hell )

that's what I think anyway........

alright, i'm soooo excited! i figured out the entire album it's awesome, the 'helena' video really did it. the whole problem is that gerard said that not all the songs are from the concept album, so it was kind of confusing, but i think this is it:
helena- the girlfriend dies, the guy's damn sad.
you know what they do to guys like us in prison?- the guy gets in a shoot out, goes to jail, and gets the death penalty
thank you for the venom- the guy goes to hell, sees his girlfriend, and makes a pact with the devil that they will be redeemed if they kill one thousand evil men
hang 'em high- they start killing, get into the newspapers and in one particular shooting the girl dies
it's not a fashion statement, it's a fucking deathwish- the guy now has a sense of revenge for the girl, continues killing, but feels more righteous in doing so, starts having on night stands
cemetery drive- in a graveyard with one of the girls he's been sleeping with, he goes to bury his girlfriend's body (not to clear on that one) i think the guy's also been killing the one night stands...i dunno
i never told you what i do for a living- the best ever. the guy realizes that the devil lied to him, because there is no way that he could kill that much and feel that dirty and be redeemed, and then he dies (killed, i think) he realizes that one day, in another life, he and his love will be together and that this is how it had to be, which is really beautiful, i get choked up at this song (weird, huh?) alternate meaning: he fell in love with one of the one night stands- dies and realizes he will see her in another lifetime. i know i'm probably totally wrong about all of this, but it's just a speculation. whoa, this is really long...

In my oppinion this is a tragic ending to the concept story. The man is one kill away, but before that, he gets shot and never sees his woman.
In the first verse we can sense the anxiety and excitement cuz he's one kill away (you can also sense the anxiety in the music)
can i meet you, alone
another night and i'll see you
another night and i'll be you
some other way to continue
to hide my face
then the music gets more systematic and determined after the "another knife..." Killing had become a pattern for him but he's starting to feel remorse and his conscience starts to bother him. The last part of the song is very chaotic, the lyrics and the music are very chaotic, showing the shock the guy is going through. I think gerard sings they gave US two shots in the back of the head because as the guy dies, so does the chance that the girl will come back to life.
Kind of a sad ending, but I wouldn't expect a "they lived forever after" from Gerard, right?
Maybe you'll think i overanalyzed or that there's gaps in my theory, but it works well for me.

I think this song is about him continuing to kill the 1000 men. It's like he's killed people for so long he feels like it will never end, but he knows this is his last night of killing because he's almost got 1000 bodies ("Another night and i'll see you") It's an open-ended thing so maybe it will lead into another album...? Oh I hope.
Anyway. "It ain't the money and it sure as hell ain't just for the fame. It's for the bodies I claim." It's like he's saying that he's not killing just to get on the news (which I imagine he would, considering there are almost 1000 dead men that are killed by a ghost...because keep in mind that the killer is dead), and that he's killing to have the bodies for the devil.

there's three references to the police/media being after him in this song: "Stay out of the light of the photograph...", "it ain't the money..." (you can imagine that one of his victims asked this), and "some other way...to hide my face"

this song is most assuredly about ... BEING A HITMAN. hence the name'l never told you what i do fro a living'
'"It ain't the money and it sure as hell ain't just for the fame. It's for the bodies I claim." duh he duz it cuz he likes to kill ppl.
And never again
and never again
They gave us two shots
to the back of the head
and we're all
dead now.

I can't clean the blood off the sheets in my bed

Can i meet you, alone?

Another knife in my hands,
a stain that never comes off the sheets
Clean me off
I'm so dirty babe,
the kind of dirty where the water never cleans off the clothes.
I keep a book of the names and those
only goes so far to bury them
So deep and down we go.

it all makes sense if you think about the hitman. and i love the concept album idea, but i really think this fits better.
