We were shootin' at a mound of dirt.
Well nothing was broken, nothing was hurt.
But I probably really should have been at work.
But if my free time's gone, would you promise me this?

That you will please bury me with it?
Please bury me with it!

Well sure as planets come, I know that they end.
And if I'm here when that happens, will you promise me this my friend?

Please bury me with it!
I just don't need none of that Mad Max bullshit.

Well the suit got tight and it split at the seams.
But I kept it out of habit and I kept it really clean.
But if it's getting' faded, if it's runnin' outta thread,
Could you just do this for me my friend?

And please just please bury me with it?
Please bury me with it!

Well we moved to the left and moved to the right.
And sure as hell we stayed out almost every single night.
But if the party's over, if the fun has to end,
Could you do this for me my friend?

Would you just please bury me with it?
Please bury me with it!

Good news for people who love bad news.
We've lost the plot and we just can't choose.
We are hummingbirds who are just not willing to move.
And there's good news for people who love bad news.
We are hummingbirds who've lost the plot and we will not move.
We have good news for anyone who loves bad news.

We were aiming for the moon. We were shooting at the stars.
But the kids were just shooting at the busses and the cars.
So don't drink the water, don't you breathe the air.
If it's gotten to that point then I have to declare:

That you please bury me with it!
Please bury me with it!

Well fads they come and fads they go.
And God I love that rock and roll!
Well the point was fast but it was too blunt to miss.
Life handed us a paycheck, we said, "We worked harder than this!"

Please bury me with it!
Please bury me with it!

We are hummingbirds who are just not going to move.
And there's good news for people who love bad news.
We are hummingbirds who've lost the plot and we well not move.
We have great news for anyone who loves bad news.

Song Meaning:well there's little to go on here but if you look at the rest of the album and the song title, you might get a clue what this is about. I think there's a good bit packed into these few lines and notes.

The phrase "dig your own grave"...It's the same as "shoot yourself in the foot" or "self-fulfilling prophesy. You "dig your own grave" when you do something to yourself or to a situation to make it implode or self-destruct. Kind of like the moths that "beat themselves to death against the lights" line in The World at Large.

So I think that the singer is digging his own grave (already digging) - he knows this, but at the same time he's hoping that situation or part of him is dead (I hope you're dead) - making it obvious that it's in fact not dead (undead?). He just is wishing it to be so.

In the next song Bury Me With It, he seems to implore that dead means dead. So if this situation or relationship or this part of your life is over...bury it and move on.

Not sure if I put in too much but those are my thoughts.

General Comment:I've listened to this like 20 times in a row with my earbuds in, and I'm 99.9% sure that he's saying:

    I'm already diggin'.
    I hope you're dead.
    I'm really diggin'.
    I hope you're undead.

General Comment:There's a They Might Be Giants song called "Dig My Grave", and i know that they've made TMBG references before (e.g. in "Paper Thin Walls"), so perhaps this is another one.

General Comment:I'm under the impression that the line is "I'll help you dig it," not "I'm already digging," but I prefer "I'm already digging," so I hope that's what it is.

The reason why I'm under this impression is because "I'll help you dig it" is a line from another song of theirs, "You're The Good Things," and Modest Mouse tends to have similar lyrics in different songs.

General Comment:Very intense and odd. Night on the sun makes me wet my pants I cry so hard. It's seven 1/2 minutes long. In 12 seconds he can evoke strong emotion. Listening to modest mouse is like surrendering your thoughts then getting them back reformatted.
