She comes to me
Whenever I am locked inside my room
Buried in the tune that I call love

She sings to me, the words I cannot hear
But then, the melody's so clear it makes me cry
Her love is so beautiful
Her love is so real, it smells like glue

She's leaving me to find a place she never will call home
I stand shaking like a stone
And smile inside

She's calling me to come to her and curl inside her womb
I hear lies, acid too
But I won't die, the pain is so beautiful
The urge is so real, it smells like glue

And I will scream, she hears me
I will tell myself she loves me
And all the lies and fears
Will stick to me like glue

And I will scream, she hears me
I will tell myself she loves me
And all the lies and fears
Will stick to me like glue

My Interpretation:It's not about drugs. Her love smells like glue because it's not real, like she had to make it for him.

General Comment:Beautiful song.. I agree, this is definitely not about a girl, rather it is a personification of an addictive drug. The part about crawling into her womb is like being wrapped in the warm blanket of dope that washes over you when your high kicks in... like being comfortable like a baby in the mother's womb.. sticking to him like glue, that's like the addiction being stuck to him... get it? :D

General Comment:This song means a lot to me.

Apologies, I haven't heard any of The Gerbils' stuff, but is that Scott Spillane singing with Jeff Mangum?

General Comment:this song is probably about drugs, but i think it's written ambiguously on purpose. there are parts that feel like a love song to an actual woman, and parts that really only fit as a drug song. so some people will hear it as one, some people will hear it as the other. that's part of the beauty and mystery of it. it's genius.

General Comment:This song is for sure about drugs, not a girl. The first two stanzas are about taking the drugs, the second two are about coming down. The last bit, about 'she hears me' and all, is more vague but i think its him trying (and probably failing) to convince himself that the drugs are worth it.

If you've ever just sat in your room and taken drugs byself all lonely like all night long, you'll immediately understand, love, and hate this song.

General Comment:stanza 1: she doesn't come into his room, obviously because it's locked. this is an artistic way of saying he's thinking about his lover.
stanza 2: sings to him? perhaps this is her leaving him, if not verbally breaking up with him, then perhaps drifting away. he doesn't want to hear it, but he knows it's true and he's nostalgic.
stanza 3: perhaps his smiling inside points back to the fact that he knows she'll never find another home.
stanza 4: she calls him back, but he knows she's lying... maybe she's saying it because she's on an acid trip? who knows what was going on in the writer's head.
chorus: this pins the feelings of a heartbroken man pretty well, i think.

I was thinking that maybe the "smells like glue" could be either literal, e.g. the character in the song is sniffing glue. or perhaps, "smells like glue" means that he senses that her ove, and his urge for her, will be sticking to him for a long time, and won't be easy to shake.

i don't like defining a song because songs mean different things to different people. this one moves me sooo much, though, so i thought i'd throw my thoughts out there to get some conversation going about it. i encourage you to disagree with me.

also, if you don't have the NMH cover of this song, go to elephant six's website (google search) and it's under mp3's, NMH.
