Lyrics for All Kinds Of Time as interpreted by BlueAndStarry

All Kinds Of Time Lyrics
The clock's running down
The team's losing ground
To the opposing defense
The young quarterback
Waits for the snap
When suddenly it all starts to make sense

He's got all kinds of time
He's got all kinds of time
All kinds of time
He's got all kinds of time
All kinds of time

He takes a step back
He's under attack
But he knows that no one can touch him now
He seems so at ease
A strange inner peace
Is all that he's feeling somehow

He's got all kinds of time
He's got all kinds of time
All kinds of time
He's got all kinds of time
All kinds of time

He thinks of his mother
He thinks of his bride-to-be
He thinks of his father
His two younger brothers
Gathered around the widescreen TV

He looks to the left
He looks to the right
And there in a golden ray of light
Is his open man
Just as he planned
The whole world is his tonight

This song is about youth and growing older. "All kinds of time" is obviously a double meaning. The QB feels young, strong, invincible, immortal. His whole life of possibilities lay out before him.

It seems to me a sad and wistful song. Perhaps it's being sung by an older person who is watching the QB and thinking back to when he was young, his whole life was ahead of him, and he still had "all kinds of time".

'Jobezark' you're entitled to your view... and i agree things like 'Mexican Wine' and 'Hey Julie' some FOW songs were made for pure enjoyment... i just don't think this is one of them... i reckon it's saying something general with a specific example... they're telling us to breathe and look at what's important and what matters through this one quarter back... :-]

Look, it's about a football play. Don't try to twist the words into some kind of meaning-- like most FoW songs there isn't that deep of a meaning to it. These songs are meant to be enjoyed, not picked apart and analyzed.

One of my favorite songs! It always make me feel very calm.

I've always just thought of the song as a metaphor and actually it does remind me of the last super bowl when The Giants won.I feel quite bad for FOW,they have GREAT songs but they were over shadowed by Stacey's Mom,too bad =[

i think this song is not linked to football at all, in fact, if anything, it shows the insignificance of it. everything begins to make sence to the boy- life that is. we've all had that defying moment, when we realize something.. something big. and with that moment comes a feeling, a 'strange inner peace'. he is is suddenly sees, life opens up. everything is at ease. hes got all kinds of time.

I think this song is a metaphore, comparing football to life. When I visualize the song, I see the quaterback, in his zone, doing what he loves, waiting for the ball, when suddenly-it just clicks for him. This one game they are losing is just one game. He will have a million more chances. All that matters is that he tries his best. So he starts going through the motions of playing football, but really he's thi8nking about his life and his future, with people he loves, revisiting memories and dreams. He is no longer worried about losing the game or screwing up, he's just okay with everything happening in the moment "a strange innner peace". The whole thing with the open man is that he knows there will always be special people in his life to be there when he needs them. And that he does win the game in the end is like saying that as long as he lives in the moment, he will be sucessful.

I agree with forest. it's about a football player but could really be about anyone. I had this feeling on vacation this summer. a bunch of my friends were just sitting around by the campfire talking and making smores, and the moon reflected off the lake just right. it was like that's how I wanted to spend the rest of my life. that's what this song is about, being happy in a sort of pure way

to the people at the start wondering where the guitar solo at the end of the song comes from, whilst not having a definite answer it sounds very much like something from a Pavement song to me

Great song, one of my all-time favorites. And yes, on the suface it's about a football player. But it's also descibing an experience we all (hopefully) have at times called being in the "flow;" athletes call it "in the zone." It's a peak experience in which time seems to slow or stop, we feel connected to everything at once and whole (at one with everything you might say). In those times, we know we’re in the right place at the right time doing the right thing. It's a great feeling whether you're on the football field or not!

someone a long time ago mentioned that james iha plays the guitar solo on this song and wondered if they were friends. i do know that FOW opened for SP on a tour in 1997?-ish. it was supposed to be garbage, but it was FOW. i'm so glad garbage couldn't make it, because FOW ruled.

i disagree with kozmik's view, and would rank this as one of fow's best. its certainly one of my all-time faves, for any band.

the qb in this song is the person i'd like top be. not a top class football player, but just the attributes he has. he never panics. he's not rushed. in today's world it's so easy to be stressed by work and life. this guy doesn't worry about the pressure of a situation. he can cope with it. i'd like to have things "start to make sense" to me some times. that knowledge that "no-one can touch him" is a wonderful trait to have. job security, happiness with a partner or whatever, just knowing that things won't go wrong must feel really good. not many people know that feeling - that's why it's a "strange" inner peace.

the references to his family make several points. all the people who matter to him are enjoying his success. they are all watching and revelling in what he does. their support means a lot to him. he has a bride to be, signalling that his life is moving in the right direction.

looking left and right and seeing an open man is very similar to how people often describe love at first sight. just glancing around the room and there, in a golden ray of light, is the love of your life. its how people usually want to fall in love. it's just like he planned. i know this isn't the meaning of the lyrics, but it has a parallel.

having his family, fiancee and life sorted out, "the whole world is his tonight". he's achieved personal and professional nirvana. there is no better feeling.

i wish i had all kinds of time. i don't enjoy being stressed. i'm not keen on pressure. i want that family support.

i'd love to be this guy.

this is a great song about how even though this quarterback may be thinking about the game at hand and short term success, he's got the whole world before him. To me, its saying that his family is healthy and proud of him and its a celebration of just how his life is only beginning.

texastechchic...weird comment? this song is all but a song about losing your virginity.

for that more like Oasis. Or at least I wouldn't want to have sex for the first time for this song...sorry to say it but it's kind of trite.
I love the cd but this is one of the weakest songs in the cd. I'd say "mexican wine", "little red light", "fire island", "stacey's mom" and "bright future in sales" are much better songs, and more mature too.

Just take a step back, take a deep breath, and you're in control. I first heard this in Scrubs and I love it.

I agree, the guitar at the end of the song sounds kind of like "Vindicated". Also, it made me think of the "Yellow" song riff by Coldplay.

P.S. Interesting note, the guitar solo in this song is played by James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins fame. I guess FOW must be friends with him or something.

bw10185, it sounds almost like Vindicated by Dashboard Confessionals. I thought of the exact same thing, but then i went and looked at Vindicated, and they are quite different. Their key is different, but the rhythm is also vaguely different, but it does sound the same.

I think its a great song (All kinds of time) and its one of my favorite ones, and has a place in all of the playlists that i make!

Taken literally, it's a song about a quarterback in a football game, getting the ball hiked to him, looking around, and seeing the open man to pass the ball to.

But if you don't pay attention to the words, it sounds like a soul-fulfilling power ballad.

Great tune, either way.
