In the notes it reads the following:
Does this song sound familiar? Most people know this as "The Lion Sleeps
Tonight," which is a popular song around the world. It is based on a song in the Zulu Language from South Africa that was written in 1939 by a musician named Solomon Linda. Someone in America [Pete Seeger] heard it and decided to write English words.
It became a worldwide hit.
The Zulu word for lion is "imbube." To call to a lion you say "mbube."
I think it's really cool how it was in the Lion King, it was originally a South African folk song about the Last king of the Zulu's. Its said that he never died, he is just sleeping, waiting to return. While in the Lion King, Simba is thought dead and comes back. I don't know, I guess it's just funny how it ties in with the movie on another level, even with Timone singing "Apumba" in exchange of the actual lyrics ^_^
