You were right
Modern girls always have to go
Right on time
Old-fashioned men always want a mistress
You were right
Modern girls always get their way
I was wrong
Modern men dream of what they can't say
That's alright
(That's alright)
I don't belong

I don't belong
Why you sitting over there?
Why you gotta say it
If you know it's sounding wrong
Says that he'll apologize
And it won't take too long
Always thinking about yourself
You don't wanna trust nobody else
Time
There's a few things
That are gonna have to change
I'm your son
Everyone has the same opinion
Won't you please
Your time is almost over
Don't be mean
We won't get the chance to do this over

That's alright
(That's alright)
I don't belong
I don't belong

Why you sitting over there?
I don't want the imprint of your key on my nose
We don't have to tell no one
Cause no one wants to know
Always thinking about yourself
You don't have no happiness at home

Oh yes we're falling down
Oh yes we're falling down
Oh yes we're falling down
Oh yes we're falling down

You don't love me
Always thinking about yourself
I am an animal
Always thinking about yourself
I am not practical
Always thinking about yourself
Was I?
Was I?

General Comment:This song is great! It does sound like us nowa days. Them voicing at the same time brings up the whole argument idea. Could be between a couple or even the entire different genders. Regina not having as many lines seems like a representation of the importance of women in the eyes of men, and it also seems like they're calling each other out. I think everything they're saying is right, only they're both looking at it from their own side. They both always think about themselves. The male is trying to analyze everything while not giving a crap about what anyone else has to think or say, and the woman, as the song goes on, realizes it but then only plays the victim and being sarcastic which is equally unintelligent. Then the end of the song is the best! We don't know who their directing their question towards, they could be questioning themselves which could be the end of all that nonsense, and it leaves us with that, with the rest of their lives being a mystery for them as they both take a step out of their old ways, together as human beings. It ALSO, could be a regress, them questioning each other and having the whole song start over. Both of these things happen all the time, beautiful beautiful song.

the first thought i had is that they dream of love but can't say they love someone.

General Comment:Am I the only person who notices the part right after the "Oh yes we are falling down" part where they both say "so fuckin' help me up (or "out" i'm not sure). Just kind of cracks me up.

General Comment:He is taking about his nose. not feet. the imprint of your key upon my nose refers to snorting cocaine off of a key, or taking a key bump. thats why the line is followed with, you dont have to tell no one cause no one wants to know.. talking about coke. the strokes loved to party when they were writing these songs..

General Comment:Actually, it IS Modern Girls and Old Fashioned Men, and it should be credited as Regina Spektor and The Strokes (Julian Casablancas delayed production to get the song credited this way)

General Comment:It sounds like the girl loves the buy more than he loves her, but shes frustrated with him, and is accusing him of "not loving her," and is putting words in his mouth (I am an animal, I am not practical). Shes mad about something. Perhaps a mistress?

General Comment:I'm actually pretty sure he doesn't want her "feet" upon his nose, as in the girl is gonna stand on his shoulders and keep him down so she can get ahead, kinda goes much better with the idea of the song.
