That Cuban girl
That brought me low
She had that skin so fine and red lips rose-like now
Her mouth was wide
And sweet as well
And now relentless hours of dreaming up her smell

And I feel as if I am looking at the world from the bottom of a well

Lonely
And the only way to beat it is to bat it down

Oh all the days
That I have run
I sought to lose that cloud that's blacking out the sun
My train will come
Some one day soon
And when it comes I'll ride it bound from night to noon

Aimless days, uncool ways of decathecting
Painless phase, blacked out thoughts you be rejecting

General Comment:a lot of drugs come through cuba and "girl" has been used as slang for heroin. Cuban Girl = heroin from Cuba. It's about addiction, voiced in a way that anyone can understand.

General Comment:I tend to agree that the take-off point is his battle with heroin. The business about the girl and a few other items add a more interesting dimensionality to the song, however. I don't think he is talking about felling just a little down about a break-up but severe clinical depression. Maybe self-medication was his way of dealing with it.

General Comment:It's about drug addiction. Namely heroin. Mike was a heroin addict for many years. Finally he quit cold turkey. He wrote the song to chronicle his fight with addiction. I suppose when you're an addict little else, other than the drug, really matters. And while you may want to quit, it's not easy. I think that's the basic message here. Definitely not about a breakup.

General Comment:He had a breakup that put him into a lonely depression. Now he realizes that to get out of his funk, he has to push back against it.

This song hit its popularity right as I was going through this exact thing, and I related immediately. It really did feel like being down a well in many ways.

General Comment:"Decathecting" could just as easily be withdrawal as it could be detaching oneself from an ex lover. I think it fits heroin addiction pretty well. Knowing Doughty had a problem with this, I agree with bridget21.

General Comment:It's about his heroin addiction that he's since kicked. Doughty himself has said this.

General Comment:I love that word "decathecting". It's kinda like taking a Corvette down an emotional highway, and then having to walk back to the place you started from. (At least to me)
