[Verse 1:]
Honey
It's been a long time coming
And I can't stop now
Such a long time running
And I can't stop now

[Riff 1:]
Do you hear my heart beating
Can you hear that sound
Cause I can't help thinking
That I don't look down

[Chorus 1:]
And then I looked up at the sun
And I could see
The way that gravity turns for you and me
And then I looked up at the sky
And saw the sun
And the way that gravity turns on everyone
On everyone

[Verse 2:]
Baby
It's been a long time waiting
Such a long, long time
And I can't stop smiling
No I can't stop now

[Riff 2:]
Do you hear my heart beating
Oh do you hear that sound
'cause I can't stop crying
and I won't look down

[Chorus 2:]
And then I looked up at the sun
And I could see
Oh the way that gravity turns
On you and me
And then I looked at the sun
And saw the sky
And the way that gravity pulls on you and I
On you and I

    Translation:
Hello!!! I´m from Brazil and I have a doubt, in first verse: "It's been a long time coming", what this means, a very long journey??? I swear that I searched the definition of this word "coming", but I get a only answer: coming is equal "the time when something new begins",example: With the COMING of railways....
But I think it isn´t the case. Please anyone can help me, maybe translating this sentence in other words.

My Opinion:The impression I get from this song is last moments of the singer (the persona, not Chris!) before reuniting with his lover who's already long dead. The gravity in this song, is death imo. How fitting it is, because when someone dies, he/she will inevitably fall back to soil. Everyone dies at one point or another.

"And the way that gravity turns on everyone"

He didn't choose to die, from his lines 'can't stop running, don't/won't look down, etc). It's like he's been living his life in regret without achieving anything after his lover's death, despite all his efforts, like he can't move on (the crying part). However, he was happy and relieved to tears to 'go back' to his lover in the end.

Maybe it's just me looking at things pessimistically (or being plain depressed), but I think it's a very sad yet romantic song. I kinda tear up everytime I listen to it. It's a beautiful song, nevertheless. As expected from Coldplay.

General Comment:so, i feel that this song really is just a love song about two soul mates finding each other after a long search. it talks about how the gravitational pull for each person is now the other person, and not necessarily any part of nature (ie: the sun or the sky). "i wont look down" would mean that he doesnt want to look away from his lover.

its just two people in such a deep love that the gravity keeping them here is in the other person.

General Comment:i think it's the exact opposite of Sometime5's interpretation - i see it as gravity pulling two people apart. being with someone you love is like flying, but like radiohead says, "gravity always wins." he knows that inevitably gravity will bring them back down to earth. he's trying to deny it ("i won't look down"), but he can't help thinking about it. when he looks up at the sky/sun he knows that they can't beat gravity.

General Comment:I think it's about love in genral. About how people fall in love and then you can fall out of love.

Like gravity pushing and pulling on your heart. thats why he "cant stop smiling" and then "cant stop crying". The song is a little joyful but mostly sad because in the end gravity "pulls" and "turns on everyone."

Its such a true song if you've ever really been in love with someone. It gives you that exact feeling in the song.

General Comment:Are you serious right now Baggins?

The song can be interpreted with Chris' version as gravity pulling him and the one he loves back together.

Baby, it's been a long time comin
    Such a long, long time
    And I can't stop running
    Such along, long time

    Cause I can't help thinking
    And I won't stop now

Have you ever thought that maybe it's about an ex- girlfriend? to me, it is. Because I can relate to it.

They go through a hard break-up, and he misses her so much. And he looks up at the sun, and the sky, and gets this glimpse of hope, that she will be back. Because "Gravity pulls on you and me"

He gets hope that she will someday be back.

And throughout the song, he talks of them having troubles, and they feel let down, they will always be their for them.

hence "I can feel your heart beating", as if to show that they did come back, because they had so much to deal with, this person realized they needed Chris(or whomever) to lean on, and learned they do need them in life.

He won't look down, he won't give up hope and getting this person back. he can't help but think of the ways she could come back, and the ways he would feel when she does come back. Because then this person does, he would be washed over with happiness.

And the ending of this song, looking up at the sun, and the sky, I can picture him holding his loved ones in his arms, as she falls asleep.

And he thinks about how "gravity pushes on everyone"

Maybe a metaphor that people are pushed by their past, their feelings and emotions for someone. They push themselves to do what is the right thing, and be with the one they love.

Definitly can be about love or about the person he loves in this song.

General Comment:I think Coldplay's version is about death, and how it's inevitable for everyone. The narrator begins by describing how death is coming (it's been a long time comin') and how he doesn't want to stop living (and I can't stop runnin'). He then asks for some reassurance from a friend or lover of some sort that he's still living (can you hear my heart beating, can you hear that sound) because he knows full well that death is inevitable (and I can't help thinking) and he doesn't want to die (and I won't stop now). Then, he has a moment of revealation, and realizes that death is like gravity, in that it pushes and pulls on everyone and thing, affecting attitudes and relationships and all sorts of crazy shit.
In the second verse, the narrator reassures his friend or lover or whatever that even if their life is engulfed in pain and problems, they have the freedom to determine and shape their life, because they're alive. (when your wheels start turning and you feel let down and it seems your troubles have come all around I can feel your heart beating, I can hear that sound) But still, in the back of his mind, he understands that in the end, even that will be taken away (and I can't help thinking and I won't look down). But once again, the narrator understands that "gravity" pulls and pushes everyone together, so essentially, we're all in the same boat, and there's nothing to fear 'cause no one is excluded. Gravity pushes down on everyone.

General Comment:Wait a second, those lyrics up top are just Embrace's slight modification of the stuff Christ Martin wrote. Who's the dick who just copied the Embrace version without making any effort to check if it's right? Ciega? You're an idiot.
Oh well. The whole "travelling back to a former love interest" theory might work for Embrace's wacking revamp of Chris's original lyrics, but I don't think it works for the Coldplay version.
