I'd swim across Lake Michigan
I'd sell my shoes
I'd give my body to be back again
In the rest of the room
To be alone with you
To be alone with you
To be alone with you
To be alone with you
You gave your body to the lonely
They took your clothes
You gave up a wife and a family
You gave your goals
To be alone with me
To be alone with me
To be alone with me
You went up on a tree
To be alone with me you went up on the tree
I've never known a man who loved me
I'd sell my shoes
I'd give my body to be back again
In the rest of the room
To be alone with you
To be alone with you
To be alone with you
To be alone with you
You gave your body to the lonely
They took your clothes
You gave up a wife and a family
You gave your goals
To be alone with me
To be alone with me
To be alone with me
You went up on a tree
To be alone with me you went up on the tree
I've never known a man who loved me

PemberleyTea, go to hell.
Yes, it's about Jesus. A turn off generally when it comes to music, but Sufjan has a way of keeping it introspective, artistic and personal that doesn't alienate us good, Christianity-shunning secularists.
This song is gorgeous.
quite unnecessary
Seriously, how about you go to hell?
i'll second you gummi. it's quite annoying when artists get preachy.

although i'm still not entirely convinced this song is about jesus. even if jesus did, as some claim, have a family, that's not common knowledge, nor is it something a religious man would write about.

there is nothing in this song that suggests jesus. even if sufjan is admittedly religious, this song has no direct references to christianity. why call it a tree? cross and tree are not synonymous, pemberley.

just because a person wants this song to be about christianity doesn't make it so. i think it could just as easily be about a gay relationship, or the idea that a gay guy loved him but then, say, committed suicide before he got a chance to know him. or, it could be written from the girl's perspective. plenty of artists write songs across gendered boundaries--jimmy eat world's "cut" comes immediately to mind.

tinto, i don't think there is really any way you can say this song is not religious, especially when you listen to other songs from this album, like "Abraham" and "The Transfiguration". this song wouldn't make any sense if he was just talking about some dude. it's not even about wanting this song to be about christianity, because it is so clearly about Jesus. "Tree" actually is synonymous with the cross, it's a pretty common saying. The word is misinterpreted, but is none the less synonymous.

but i will admit that when i first heard this song, i assumed it was about a gay dude, but i've realized it's pretty obvious that it's about Jesus.
