Helena Lyrics
Long ago
Just like the hearse you die to get in again We are so far from you Burning on just like a match you strike to incinerate The lives of everyone you know And what's the worst you take From every heart you break And like the blade you stain Well I've been holding on tonight What's the worst that I could say Things are better if I stay So long and goodnight So long and goodnight Came a time When every star fall brought you to tears again We are the very hurt you sold And what's the worst you take From every heart you break And like the blade you stain Well I've been holding on tonight What's the worst that I could say Things are better if I stay So long and goodnight So long and goodnight And if you carry on this way Things are better if I stay So long and goodnight So long and goodnight Can you hear me Are you near me Can we pretend to leave and then We'll meet again When both our cars collide What's the worst that I could say Things are better if I stay So long and goodnight So long and goodnight And if you carry on this way Things are better if I stay So long and goodnight So long and goodnight

God, I love MCR. I hope they get publicity, but never become too big. I'd hate for them to have the same kind of fan base as say, Green Day.

Okay, so, while it may have been about his grandmother as far as death goes, I don't think it is entirely about her. This is my take:
The song goes backwards. It seems to be a suicide pact between the speaker (Gerard) and another person, but Gerard decided not to kill himself and not tell the other person because the other person is going to go through with it and he respects that.
This is how it moves backwards:
"Long ago
Just like the hearse you died to get in again
We are so far from you"
We just know that the person has died.
"Burning on just like a match you start to incinerate
The lives of everyone you knew
And whats the worst to take, from every heart you break (heart you break)
And like a blade you stain
Well I've been holding on tonight"
They've left many people shaken in their wake, and Gerard is just hanging in there.
"Whats the worst that I could say?
Things are better if I stay
So long and goodnight
So long and goodnight"
With the knowledge of the ending of the song, "Things are better if I stay" is talking about how Gerard has chosen not to kill himself. "What's the worst that I could say?" Is saying that he's chosen not to tell the person because they're going to kill themselves anyways, so why should he bother?
"Came a time
When every star fall brought you to tears again
We are the very hurt you sold
And whats the worst you take, from every heart you break
And like a blade you stain
Well I've been holding on tonight"
This is back to when the person is alive, and they are a wreck and just wants to die. "What's the worst you take, from every heart you take?" The person is thinking over if they will hurt anyone in their actions, and they know they will, but they'll get over it eventually.
"And if you carry on this way
Things are better if I stay
So long and goodnight
So long and goodnight"
He knows this person can't carry on living like this, but he still chooses to live so he's telling the person goodbye.
"Can you hear me?
Are you near me?
Can we pretend
to leave again
And meet again
When both our cars collide?"
I think this is after the person has died and he is talking to them and saying that he wanted to "leave" with them. There's regret, but he's stuck with his decision and he knows that.
Not necessarily what the song is about, but that's what I got out of it.

"It's the most important song on the record because me and Mikey had lost our grandma two months before we recorded the record. And she was probably the most important person to me especially like, encouraging me to sing and be a musician and all those things. Like, she made me be Peter Pan in the school play when we were little and she taught me how to sing and paint...She was a wonderful, beautiful woman and we kind of wanted a song to be her legacy. And when we didn't pick any singles on the record because we didn't write them to be singles, so when the label said they wanted that to be the second single we were really happy. And they said they'd make a video for it, and so it's like she has a nice legacy."

This is such a beautiful song, and it made me cry even before I knew any more lyrics than the chorous (because those are the only ones I can understand.) Beautiful.

alright, i'm soooo excited! i figured out the entire album it's awesome, the 'helena' video really did it. the whole problem is that gerard said that not all the songs are from the concept album, so it was kind of confusing, but i think this is it:
helena- the girlfriend dies, the guy's damn sad.
-------------------------------
I just wanted to correct you on that statement you made.... Helena was not his girlfiend, it was his grandmother that was named Elena everyone called her Helen. She passed away and it affected him drastically. Hes a brillient poet, all his songs involve death, i herd in a interview that he stated he was death obbsessed, he understands the meaning of death ever since she passed on.
The songs Helena & I never told you what I do for a living, in my opinion are so powerful. Every time i listen to them I start to cry, I know it sounds stupid but him exxpressing himself in his music , screaming in sadness is gut renching and breaks my heart and its like you can feel his pain through his words. I have never had an artist ever effect me emotionally, till i herd this album. I thought it was only me that had a fucked up child while going to school an getting bullied caz i was different, reashuring to know I can relate to someone.

whoever suggested the suicide pact thing REALLY makes sense, and it can also still be considered a dedication, couldnt it? And the singer would still be able to relate emotionally to get the feeling into the singing. I dont know for sure, of course, but for it just being about his gma, how do we explain the lyrics like "Whats the worst that I could say?
Things are better if I stay" If they were to his gma...where would he go? Commit suicide in hopes of being with her? that doesnt make sense to me... same with "if you carry on this way"...if shes dead, she wouldnt be "carrying on". :/
Regardless...its definitely a smash hit, with the whole record in tow...this is my first song and cd Ive known from MCR, does anyone have any suggestions on what to buy next, and what to expect? Any hopes of anything better than Helena and Three Cheers?
