Long ago
Just like the hearse you die to get in again
We are so far from you

Burning on just like a match you strike to incinerate
The lives of everyone you know

And what's the worst you take
From every heart you break
And like the blade you stain
Well I've been holding on tonight

What's the worst that I could say
Things are better if I stay
So long and goodnight
So long and goodnight

Came a time
When every star fall brought you to tears again
We are the very hurt you sold

And what's the worst you take
From every heart you break
And like the blade you stain
Well I've been holding on tonight

What's the worst that I could say
Things are better if I stay
So long and goodnight
So long and goodnight
And if you carry on this way
Things are better if I stay
So long and goodnight
So long and goodnight

Can you hear me
Are you near me
Can we pretend to leave and then
We'll meet again
When both our cars collide

What's the worst that I could say
Things are better if I stay
So long and goodnight
So long and goodnight
And if you carry on this way
Things are better if I stay
So long and goodnight
So long and goodnight

General Comment:I Believe there are two possible meanings to this song... the first being specified by the band themselves a tribute to Mike/Gerards Grandmother thats the first and more obvious mostly because the band has repeated its meaning time and time again... however the other possible meaning would coincide with the story of the album if im not mistaken i havent delved into TCFSR for a while now but i believe the story goes something like bride groom killed the night of their wedding the bride in this case (Helena)...has come back for revenge while the groom trys to keep her in innocence possibly talking to her spirit? "can you hear me are you near me..." in other words if you have come back and you are close enough to hear me...lets pretend that we havent even met yet; when my life has come to an end well meet again when we are both in spirit...."can we pretend to leave and then we will meet again when both our cars collide..." in the begining of the song he states "Burning on just like a match you strike to incinerate" this stanza i believe is speaking of rememberance her heart burns bright even after death the rest referring to striking a match to start an inferno...in other words "Helenas" has left a legacy that even after death everyone of the lives that she touched sees how brightly she burns. "and whats the worst you take from every heart you break" Helena has passed away with her she took a peice of everyones heart (the worst) everyone remains heartbroken due to her passing...just like the blade you stain (being used as a metaphor) Helenas passing has caused everyone such a pain that if you were to stain a blade you could feel in your heart."and whats the worst that i could say things are better if i stay so long and goodnight..." i could join you in death (the worst that i could say) although it would be right so i must stay and force you too wait mostly because it would be the same as if i had taken the blade and caused it to stain...(things are better if i stay)so for now i say goodbye and goodnight (so long and goodnight).... i know its a little out of order but meh lol

General Comment:I shouldn't have to explain that this song is about Gerard and Mikey's grandmother, Elena dying. I'm not going to analyse the lyrics, but I just wanted to say something.

Their grandmother was called Elena Lee Rush, but the song is called Helena. I think this is because they wanted to respect her name and were worried that relatives might of been offended if they used her real name.

The other reason could be because the Misfits have a song called Helena and they wanted to called the song Helena like the Misfits. I'm not too sure about this reason though. MCR are big fans of the Misfits, but their song Helena is about raping a woman and chopping off her arms and legs...

General Comment:I think this song can be interpreted in many ways, as we can all relate differently to different songs in our special ways. I believe that this song was a tribute to Gerard Way's grandmother as he said so himself, however, I've had my own interpretation of this song before I knew that.

Lovers become separated by death. The woman dies but wants more life, and she refuses to leave her lover so she returns from the dead; cheats death in a sense. The man loves her but believes it is best that their worlds don't collide, though he still wants to be with her. He belongs among the living. He knows that once he dies and becomes like her, they will be together so he's saying a bittersweet goodbye to her until then and wishes for her to remain dead until the time comes ("Things are better if I stay"). If there was another way they could be together he'd love to take that chance buy he feels he doesn't belong dead just yet, and if she loves him she'll wait for him in death.

I think this way because, yes, Sweet Revenge is a concept album. Sweet Revenge and The Black Parade both tell beautiful stories, and Sweet Revenge is about death and love.

General Comment:This song is Gerard's Hate letter to himself, he had alot of self-hate and he let it all out into this one song.

General Comment:It could be about two lovers that were unfortunately and unexpectedly separated somehow, and they're waiting for the possibility of the chance that they see each other again, and even after they die they'll be living dead and do everything they can to get back to each other somehow to be together in death.

General Comment:Ok, I know it's about his grandma, but I interpret it differently. I think it's about a girl who was suicidal and mentally ill. She kills herself, and this song is about the guy who loved her feeling angry and having to deal with the aftermath. He's pissed that she was so eager to die. He's says that everyone is far from her. I think this means both physically because she's dead, and mentally because she was so hard to understand. Now that she's gone I think her presence is still burning around them. He's saying that even in death she makes the lives of the people she knew difficult. The chorus basically reiterates the point. I think the blade part refers to her suicide. He doesn't say a blade, but "the" blade. Now he's holding on, but it's been hard on him. He's thinking about how in life she pushed him away and he wanted to leave sometimes, but it was better that he stayed. I also think at this point he's considering dying to be with her, but he knows that it's better for him to stay. Then he tells her goodbye. He remembers when she was at her worst and everything made her emotional and sad. Then she basically transferred her pain to everyone else when she killed herself. He knows they will meet again in death. Until then he has to pretend that he's over her even though he never really will be.

General Comment:The whole song is simply a celebration of Gerard and Mike's grandmother's life--her sins, her joys, her light...everything.

I can't believe people are still debating its meaning, even when the band has said time and time again what it is.
