Lyrics for Helena as interpreted by Brandnizzle2k4

Helena Lyrics
Long ago
Just like the hearse you die to get in again
We are so far from you

Burning on just like a match you strike to incinerate
The lives of everyone you know

And what's the worst you take
From every heart you break
And like the blade you stain
Well I've been holding on tonight

What's the worst that I could say
Things are better if I stay
So long and goodnight
So long and goodnight

Came a time
When every star fall brought you to tears again
We are the very hurt you sold

And what's the worst you take
From every heart you break
And like the blade you stain
Well I've been holding on tonight

What's the worst that I could say
Things are better if I stay
So long and goodnight
So long and goodnight
And if you carry on this way
Things are better if I stay
So long and goodnight
So long and goodnight

Can you hear me
Are you near me
Can we pretend to leave and then
We'll meet again
When both our cars collide

What's the worst that I could say
Things are better if I stay
So long and goodnight
So long and goodnight
And if you carry on this way
Things are better if I stay
So long and goodnight
So long and goodnight

WHOA! LOOK AT ALL THE COMMENTS!
WHOA! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I LOVE THIS SONG! I LOVE THE VIDEO! I LOVE MCR!
Yup, I'm done.

Yer, I know this song's about his grandma but, but, but, but, but, but I thought Gerard said, "I've had a lot of self-hate in the past and the song Helena is the most recent example. It's an open letter to myself" or something like that. I DON'T GET YOU, GERARD! I'M TOO YOUNG TO DIE. NOOOOOOO!
'scuse me.

SO LONG AND GOOD MORNING! SO LONG AND GOOD MORNINGGGGG..................
I really think that would have made a better song. Ha ha. Jokes. Didn't mean to be disrespectful.

His Grandmother, whom has "taught him everything he knows" is what this song pays tribute to. Her name, is (as you can see) Helena.

i've heard gerard say that it was about a relationship and it was a tribute to his grandmother who passed away.

you guys are thinking to hard for the meaning. i understand gerard said it is about his grandma, do you think it is a tribute to his grandma rather than about her. idk, this song really makes me listen to it to find a meaning that i can understand.
I AM CONFUSED! ANYONE ELSE FEEL CONFUSED? this song feels more like a relationship that ended badly, not missing your grandma.

HOW IN THE WORLD IS THIS SONG ABOUT HIS GRANDMA. i think this song is about a girl friend that threw away everything she had, and the boyfriend realises that there is nothing he can do to fix her pain. so she is dieing. and possibly committed suicide. the video for this song is really freakin sweet. i like this song, but i am very confused on the meaning. i play it in my car and i feel unstoppable!!!!!!

this song has t be about suicide. regardless of why it was originally written, it could definitely be interpreted that way.
the first few lines are obviously about death. then the line: "Burning on just like a match you strike to incinerate theives of everyone you know." The memory of the person the singer is talking about lives on as people are so torn apart by grief that it is burning them like a fire. this person broke so many hearts by commiting suicide, dying by his or her own hand, in the song it says blade. the person stained it with his or her own blood. perhaps the singer is contemplating suicide because he is so tomented by this person's death. but he decides to "hold on tonight." because he realizes the worst thing he could say would be that he is going to die as well. things will be better if he stays alive and faces the grief without transferring it to others by dying, because the person's memory is carrying on and serving as a reminder of the deep pain his death caused the singer and everyone around him. by saying "so long and goodnight," the singer tries to come to terms with this person's death by letting go once and for on instead of dwelling on the pain. but there is still time for more reflections. the singer recalls how there was a time where every starfall brought the person to tears again; that is, this person was depressed for days and cried every night. but now, by killing himself, the singer and other loves ones of this person have taken on the very hurt this person sold.
that's what i got so far, don't have time to write the rest.

I'm sorry if this is long.

[Long ago/Just like the hearse you die to get in again/We are so far from you]
This means that Elena feels so far away, and that he feels Elena would die, even though she is already dead.

[Burning on just like a match you strike to incinerate/The lives of everyone you know]
This is almost a metaphor for the way people can light up your life... and for Gerard his grandmother is the queen of this art.

[And what's the worst you take/From every heart you break/And like the blade you stain/Well I've been holding on tonight]
This is almost a rhetorical question - implying that his grandmother never meant to hurt anybody, although maybe she did sometimes.

[What's the worst that I could say/Things are better if I stay/So long and goodnight/So long and goodnight]
This is also a question to his grandmother, asking why he didn't spend more time with the granny he owed so much.

[Came a time/When every star fall brought you to tears again/We are the very hurt you sold]
This says that, towards the end of her lifetime, his grandmother began to apreciate everything, knowing she did not have long. This reminds me of my own grandmother, who tells me she loves me whenever I see her - she is always afraid of Death.

[And if you carry on this way/
Things are better if I stay/So long and goodnight/So long and goodnight]
This says that if, maybe his grandmother's condition continues to deteriorate, he doesn't trust himself not to leave her.

[Can you hear me/Are you near me/Can we pretend to leave and then/We'll meet again/When both our cars collide]
This may be that his grandmother is in her final hours and not responding; the 'can you hear me' bit may be something you would say to someone dying. 'when both our cars collide' says that, maybe Gerard will see her in the afterlife.

I'm very sorry if this bored you, or was morbid - but that is how I percieve this.

Lol, Sher_143. You're right.

It goes... "So long, and goodnight."
"So long, not goodnight."
I happen to be listening to the song right now xD I saw your comment and took a closer listen.

This song is actually really good. It's the song that got me into them.

And I wish people wouldn't comment just to bash a band they hate. If you hate them, shut up and don't look up the lyrics. :)

It's really emotional to me, it reminds me of a person I know, who died recently, when I first heard Helena, back in early 2005
