(For what you did to me
and what i'll do to you
you get what everyone else gets
you'll get a lifetime)

Lets Go!

Do you remember back when we met
you told me this gets harder
Well it did
Been holding on forever
promise me that when i'm gone you'll kill my enemies

The damage you've inflicted
temporary wounds
i'm coming back from the dead
and i'll take you home with me
i'm taking back the life you stole

We never got that far
this helps me to think
all through the night
bright lights that
won't kill me now
or tell me how
just you and i
your starless eyes remain

Hip hip hooray for me
you talk to me
but would you kill me in my sleep
lay still like the dead
from the razor to the rosary
we could lose ourselves
and paint these walls
in pitchfork red

I will avenge my ghost
with every breath i take
i'm coming back from the dead
and i'll take you home with me
i'm taking back the life you stole

This hole you put me in
wasn't deep enough
and i'm climbing out right now
you're running out of places
to hide from me

When you go
just know that i will remember you
if living was the hardest part
we'll then one day be together

And in the end we'll fall apart
just as the leaves change in color
and then i will be with you
i will be there one last time now

When you go
just know that i will remember you
i've lost my fear of falling
i will be with you, i will be with you

My Interpretation:"Promise me that when I’m gone you’ll kill my enemies"
The girl cheated on him, and he believes she will leave every guy she may be with in the future
"I’ll come back from the dead and I’ll take you home with me, I’m taking back the life you stole".
He s planning to recover his life, but he s gonna do that in front of her, to show her what she lost
"We never got that far, This helps me to think all through the night. Bright lights that won’t kill me now, or tell me how. Just you and I your starless eyes remain”
The relationship was just beggining to get serious, he s getting insomnia though. This time he s spending awake let s him think with clarity and helps him get over the whole situation. His feelings for her are losing power as time passes by.
"Hip-hip-hooray for me! You talk to me. But would you kill me in my sleep? Lay still like the dead. From the razor to the rosary, We could lose ourselves. And paint these walls in pitchfork red"
He finally got over her, but there s still anger left inside him. She comes back to him, trying to ammend things. He shows indifference, although he wants to rip her head off.
"This hole you put me in wasn’t deep enough And I’m climbing out right now You’re running out of places to hide from me. When you go, just know that I will remember you"
She can t take the idea that he has gotten over her and is using her as a model of who not to hook up with
"If living was the hardest part We’ll then one day b together And in the end we’ll fall apart Just like the leaves change in colors"
Maybe he ll fall to temptation once, but he knows the relationship won t prevail and they will take different paths
"When you go, just know that I will remember you I lost my fear of falling, I will be with you I will be with you"
When they finally go their own way , he will always remember her, as she has taught him that bitches are everywhere, but that he doesn t have to feel bad for it. However, he knows she won t forget him and that she will regret her action the rest of her life

My Interpretation:This song applies to my life so much...

If applied in general circumstances (as in, besides the concept album) I'm quite certain he's talking about rising from your own ashes. The name "It's Not a Fashion Statement, It's a Deathwish"----basically, everyone thinks he's doing what he's doing to be cool, but he's pretty much saying "screw it" and doing what he wants, even if it leads to his downfall. And in this, I think it means he's been beaten down to his lowest point, when he "died" (translation: when he broke down/couldn't take it anymore) but then he "rose from the dead" with a new resolve to get revenge and live. He's doing everything he can to spite his old enemies, even if it kills him.

In summary: The dude was ridiculed and beaten down in his life, but when he reached his lowest point he finally snapped, and now he's going wild and living for thrills and he wants his old enemies to know that they have no effect on him anymore.

At least, that's how it seems to me :/

My Interpretation:I personally think this song is about a very destructive relationship (or maybe friendship), but hidden behind a certain concept of death and murder. I don’t know but that’s the first thing that I thought when I first heard this song:

“Do you remember back when we met
you told me this gets harder
    Well it did”
    >>He thinks back about when they first met. She told them their relationship would get harder and it turns out she was right.

    “Been holding on forever
promise me that when i'm gone you'll kill my enemies”
    >>He’s been trying to hold on to their relationship although it’s ‘killing him’ that’s why he’s asking to kill this enemies when he can no longer do that. This one might be a little far-fetched though.

    “The damage you've inflicted
    temporary wounds
i'm coming back from the dead
and i'll take you home with me
i'm taking back the life you stole”
    >>She’s really hurt him. He even compares it with death (maybe a depression), but ‘the wounds are temporary’ and he’s coming back to her for revenge: ‘Taking back the life she stole’.

    “We never got that far
    this helps me to think
    all through the night
    bright lights that
    won't kill me now
    or tell me how
    just you and i
    your starless eyes remain”
    >>He’s talking about how it went wrong and how ‘he wants to kill her’= wants revenge (‘your starless eyes remain’) but also still loves her.

    “Hip hip hooray for me
    you talk to me
but would you kill me in my sleep
    lay still like the dead”
    >>After things went wrong and she hurt him really badly she starts talking to him again. He’s actually not happy about it and wonders if ‘she’d kill him in his sleep’: hurt him again when he isn’t expecting it.

“from the razor to the rosary
    we could lose ourselves
    and paint these walls
    in pitchfork red”
    >>He talks about how they could lose themselves and end up hurting each other again: ‘paint these walls in pitchfork red’

    “I will avenge my ghost
    with every breath i take
i'm coming back from the dead
and i'll take you home with me
i'm taking back the life you stole”
    >>He’s coming back after she hurt him so much that he ended up in a depression or something like that and he wants revenge.

“This hole you put me in
    wasn't deep enough
and i'm climbing out right now
    you're running out of places
    to hide from me”
    >>He’s coming out of the depression she put him in and is coming for her. He wants his revenge.

    “When you go
just know that i will remember you
if living was the hardest part
we'll then one day be together
And in the end we'll fall apart
just as the leaves change in color
and then i will be with you
i will be there one last time now
    When you go
just know that i will remember you
i've lost my fear of falling
i will be with you, i will be with you”
    >>He says that he’ll always remember her and that they’ll end up meeting again. And although he is very angry he also knows that he’ll always love her. He’ll always fall for her and he knows he’ll be with her again. So these last lines kind of sum up the entire story: Their relationship is messed up. They keep hurting each other and although he’s very angry and actually wants revenge (all the killing references are about them hurting each other), he knows he’ll always forgive her but that it will happen again.

Sorry if this has been said before. I just thought I’d share my own interpretation.

Song Meaning:The beginning part "You get what everyone else gets- you get a lifetime" comes, most likely, from the graphic novel The Sandman. It is in the seventh compilation, Brief Lives (which I am holding right now), where a man who has lived for fifteen thousand years says to Death (personified as a perky, nurturing, goth woman) "I did well, didn't I? I lived 15,000 years. That's more than most people get." And she replies, "You get what everyone else gets. You get a lifetime. No more. No less."

Just thought some people might want to know that. It might help tie into some deeper meaning in the song. (also, if anyone else has mentioned it... sorry xP)

My Interpretation:I have loved this song since 6 years ago. Overtime, I developed more of meaning for this song or at least I've attached a story to it.

There's this couple and their relationship is becomes known and it's forbidden. The guy gets murdered and the girl is left alone. The third person in the song is the enemy. The point of views switch back and forth between the guy and the girl.

"The Damage you've inflicted, Temporary Wounds, I'm coming back from the dead, I'll take you home with me, I'm taking back the life you stole" is from the girl's point of view to the enemy.

"Do you remember back when we met, you told me this gets harder, Well it did, Been holding on forever, promise me that when i'm gone you'll kill my enemies." Here, the girl is remembering the first she ever met her future love and as their relationship progressed, he asked her to kill his enemies when he's gone. Maybe he knew that his death day was coming soon.

In the end, she hopes to reunite with her love.

Just this much fits with the story. The other lines I didn't specify didn't really fit.

General Comment:I don't know if this is from my personal life when I first heard this song, but I always thought it was about heroin addiction.

"For what you did to me" (causing his addiction) and what I'll do to you (quit the drug) You get what everyone else gets, you get a lifetime" is referring to the addiction. How he will either live a lifetime with it, or beat it forever.

"Do you remember that day when we met? You told me this gets harder, well it did" refers to him first using, and when the drug 'told him' it would get worse.

"Been holding on forever. Promise me that when I'm gone you'll kill my enemies" When he beats the addiction he's 'holding on to', the withdrawals (his enemy) will die.

"The damage you've inflicted, temporary wounds. I'm coming back from the dead, and I'll take you home with me, I'm taking back the life you stole" is talking to the drug addiction, that it's a temporary part of his life that he will learn from forever, and he's taking his life back.

"We never got that far, this helps me to think all through the night. Bright lights that
won't kill me now or tell me how. Just you and I, your starless eyes remain". This is referring to the withdrawal stage. You suffer through insomnia and racing thoughts, your pupils grow large, bright lights hurt. And it's just him and his drug, the 'starless eyes'.

"Hip hip hooray for me, you talk to me, but would you kill me in my sleep. Lay still like the dead." Talking to the drug again, he uses it again (hence, his 'happiness' and it 'talking' to him), but is afraid of overdosing and 'lying still like the dead'. "From the razor (common tool for drug use) to the rosary (obtaining purity) we could lose ourselves and paint these walls in pitchfork red (succumbing to the addiction).

"I will avenge my ghost with every breath I take. I'm coming back from the dead and I'll take you home with me, I'm taking back the life you stole". He's taking back his life from the addiction.

"This hole you put me in wasn't deep enough, and I'm climbing out right now. You're running out of places to hide from me." The hole of addiction won't bury him, and it can't hide inside of him.

"When you go, just know that I will remember you." He will carry this experience for the rest of his life.

"If living was the hardest part we'll then one day be together. And in the end we'll fall apart just as the leaves change in color. And then I will be with you, I will be there one last time now" If life while sober becomes too hard, he will go back. He will 'fall apart' and use one more time.

"When you go, just know that I will remember you. I lost my fear of falling, I will be with you. I will remember you." Again, remembering the drug, and how he will carry his experience with him forever.

General Comment:In an interview I watched, they said they wrote a song about having sex with men on this album. I think it's this song.

My view on this is that the male main character found an abusive ex-boyfriend of his lover's. He develops a sexual relation with the ex and ends up killing him. "Fashion Statement," I think, refers to bisexuality, and how people do it because others think it's "hot."

    But, that's just my opinion.
