Lyrics for Heart as interpreted by soapboxracer

Heart Lyrics
Time can take its toll on the best of us
Look at you, you're growing old so young
Traffic lights blink at you in the evening
You tilt your head and turn it to the sun

Sometimes the TV is like a lover
Singing softly as you fall asleep
You wake up in the morning and it's still there
Adding up the things you'll never be

Alright, I can say what you want me to
Alright, I can do all the things you do
Alright, I'll make it all up for you
I'm still in love with you
I'm still in love with you

Time can take its toll on the best of us
Look at you, you're growing old so young
Traffic lights blink at you in the evening
You tilt your head and turn it to the setting sun

You disembark the latest flight from paradise
You almost turn your ankle in the snow
You fall back into where you started
Make up words to songs you used to know

Alright, I can say what you want me to
Alright, I can do all the things you do
Alright, I'll make it all up for you
I'm still in love with you
I'm still in love with you

The hard rock god, he never had a chance, you know
Incurable romantics never do
He held a flame I wasn't born to carry
I'll leave the dying young stuff up to you

You get back on the latest flight to paradise
I found out from a note taped to the door
I think I saw your airplane in the sky tonight
Through my window lying on the kitchen floor

Alright, I can say what you want me to
(I want more)
Alright, I can do all the things you do
(Give me more)
Alright, I'll make it all up for you
I'm still in love with you
I'm still in love with you
(I want more)

Alright, I'll say what you want me to
(Give me more)
Alright, I'll do all the things you do
(I want more from you)
Alright, I'll make it all up for you
I'm still in love with you
I'm still in love with you

I'm still in love with you

Arrgh... anything by Stars is so darned romantic! My favourite line of this song: "You get back on the latest flight to paradise / I found out from a note taped to the door / I think I saw your airplane in the sky tonight / Through my window lying on the kitchen floor." You can listen to an in-studio performance of this song (and others) at .

i was completely blown away the first time i listened to this song, the falling piano/keyboard notes, the lyrics, the chorus... everything. i can't even really explain it but this song touches me. i agree with rivers, it's easy to put on repeat without ever growing bored of the song.

besides the chorus, my favorite part of the lyrics:

"you disembark the latest flight from paradise
you almost turn your ankle in the snow,"

the "snow" being stress that you get slapped in the face with("almost turn your ankle") upon your return back to normalcy from a time of bliss. i know that feeling well.., it's all about the person having so much fun, say, visiting a friend; a week of complete happiness, bliss even, but then having to say goodbye to the friend and coming back home... immediately being greeted by all of the garbage, worries, and stress that the person left behind at home.

"you fall back into where you started
make up words to songs you used to know,"

going back into the routine of life again after such a wonderful week is horrible, and you find yourself forgetting a lot of things and making it up as you go along, in an attempt to cope with the feeling of, well, loss.

those lines say so much with so little. =P

as for the general meaning of the song? to me it's about spending time with a person, time passes, and you play it off to them like it's all fine with you, you don't mind at all that they left, or whether or not they ever come around... but in reality they're still in love with the person, and they want more than what they're getting from the current situation.

the last bit of the chorus in the song gets me every time... i admit to being moved to tears a few times. =P it's a powerful song, and those lyrics ("I want more / give me more...") are so heart-felt and real. sometimes i wish i had the guts to say that to certain people.

I think this is my favourite song ever... I first heard this on a mixed CD from American Eagle Outfitters. Everytime I make a mixed CD it is one of the first added.
However, I don't understand half of what it means... I just know I fell in love with it the first time I heard it a few years back.
My favourite part is "You get back on the latest flight to paradise
I found out from a note taped to the door
I think I saw your airplane in the sky tonight
Through my window lying on the kitchen floor"
This is the one song my sisters and I never switch off and can agree to listen to.
I wish I could find an album in a store. Im gunshy of buying off the internet.

Incredible song. Its so moving. Those Stars, they get me every time! Haa. The way Amy Millan sings that chorus is just unbelievable! Her voice even seems a little raspy. I love it.

I totally agree with delial. "to me it's about spending time with a person, time passes, and you play it off to them like it's all fine with you, you don't mind at all that they left, or whether or not they ever come around... but in reality they're still in love with the person, and they want more than what they're getting from the current situation." That makes complete and total sense to me, and I agree.

the person is willing to do whatever it takes to please the other person but no matter how much they do, it will never be enough. i also think its about falling back into old routiens and patterns with an ex love yet the patterns have changed, its the same person but time has changed them.'You fall back into where you started
Make up words to songs you used to know'
you dont really know them in the ways you used to.
this song is nostalgic and wistful.

i think delial has the most amazing outlook on this song that i've ever heard. no one's been able to explain the emotions behind the lyrics so well. i'm speechless, it almost brought tears to my eyes. seriously.

this was the first Stars song i ever heard, also. my roommate used to play it all the time, and she would have it on repeat while we went to sleep. the beat is so soothing. after a while, i looked up the lyrics for it and put this song on every mix i made for about 4 months. about 3 months ago, i was in a music store, just browsing through cds and not expecting to find anything. i came across "set yourself on fire," and i hadn't heard any of the songs off of that cd, but i immediately bought it and popped it in my best friends cd player. it didn't get ejected for weeks.

but that CD is not nearly as amazing as this one song.

...I could have sworn it said "the hard luck, girl, you never had a chance you know...", but I may be wrong...I definately don't hear any thing about Kurt Kobane in there either!

anyways, amazing song...no words...

in responce to the Kurt Cobain lyrics.... In the actual lyrics (and in the cd jacket lyrics), it is defenatly "Kurt Cobain, he never had a chance you know", but in the song itself, it is actualy sung as "the hard rock god, he never had a chance, you know"

As for what the song means, i think it has been summed up beautifuly already, and i don't really have anything to ad. This song is so powerful and deeply moving yet so soft and peaceful. It makes me almost cry each time i hear it.

One of the reasons I am so in love with Stars is because their Canadian character comes through so easily in their songs. I spent two months in India last summer, and their sweet Montreal accents were like a little piece of home.

Anyway, my point was that the reference to "snow" was an example of what I mean. The idea of coming home from "paradise" and finding yourself in ankle-deep snow - very Canadian. And while I'm sure it has other symbolic meanings, it's one of the (many) reasons why Stars has fast become one of my favourite bands.

i've always heard "hard rock god" instead of kurt cobain too.
people seem to only be talking about a couple of the lyrics. are we forgetting the amazingness of:

"Sometimes the TV is like a lover
Singing softly as you fall asleep
You wake up in the morning and it's still there
Adding up the things you'll never be"

i love how stars song's meanings are never toooo deep, and easily readable. but then every once and awhile, there's a part that means just a little more. [as i discover reading everyone else's interpertations and seeing parts i over-looked, such as the "turning ankle in the snow" part.]
i always see the canadaian in them too, and this is my top 3 most played song on my iPod. : D

i also get chills from amy's voice.
: )

I love this song. It seems to have already been explained enough. I just wanted to add that I love the Freanch Horn parts, they just make it so much more enjoyable for me. I play(ed) the french horn. I miss the sounds of it, and Stars gives me the sound, without me having to play the instrument..

the guy doesn't want the girl to leave him. part of him is begging her to stay, but at the same time he's letting her go because he knows that he needs to

"I'll make it all up for you"

Usually, it would be "I'll make it up to you" instead of for you. That implies that they're making it up, that it isn't real. It adds a different touch to it, if you look at it that way, as if the singer isn't really still in love with them, but just making it up for the sake of... who knows what.

Or maybe it's a canadian thing and I'm way off.

I love this song as well.
I feel like its about someones lover who moves away and comes home for a visit. it reminds me of the love of my life who moved away, he tells me where he is is amazing. Brags about the view and how he already calls it home. He then came back for a visit... we picked up right where we left off. then, leaves with bairly a good bye.

"Time can take it's toll on the best of us... Look at you you're growing old, so young" being away for a long time...

"You disembark the latest flight from paradise... You almost turn your ankle in the snow" arriving...

"You get back on the latest flight to paradise.... I found out from a note taped to the door" leaving...

Another thing (i'm almost done) "Alright, I'll make it all up for you, I'm still in love with you" maybe means i'll make it up that i'm over you, I don't still love you... but really, I do. or maybe the other way around... you've been gone for long but Ill pretend that i'm still in love with you.
