Lyrics for Stars and Sons as interpreted by sexautomata

Stars and Sons Lyrics
And when you let it
You ask for nothing, why don't you share it
All in the time you went
There's someone that left
This one will know how far I live on

This one will ever know in this town
And in a red room
At a distance
How should I know when?
You can see through the rest
I don't know when, it won't be this time

This one will know how far I live on

All in the time you went
There's someone that left
This one will know how far I live on

How should I know when?
You can see through the rest
I don't know when, it won't be this time

This one will know how far I live on

Indeed the bass riff is awesomely addictive. Love it. There is also much more to enjoy in this song. The clapping. All the crazy (guitar?) sounds around 3:40 - 4:00. It is a truly great song!

In terms of meaning, all I get out of it is from "this one will know how far I live on" - to me, "this one" refers to my son (name of the song is Stars and Sons, after all), and, in a way, a son is someone who keeps his father's spirit alive after the father is gone (dead) by remembering and revering all the good the father brought to the son's life.

correct lyrics:

Then when you let it
You asked for nothing
Why don't you share it
All of the time you live
There's something out there

This one will know, how far I live on
This one will ever know in this town
And in the red room
At a distance

How would you know it
You're the same when you're living
I don't know when
It won't be this

This one will know, how far I live on
This one will know, how far I live on

All of the time you wait, there's someone out there
And anyone can find all the rest

How would you show it
You can see through the rest
I don't know when
It won't be this time

This one will know, how far I live on
This one will know, how far I live on

Follow-up:
The repetitive claps in the song might possibly involve the theme of 'synchronization' (people clapping hands together) -- continuous attempts by this guy/girl to 'synchronize' the real personality of his/her ex and the emulated personality of the 'persona'.
Such attempts at synchronization could partly comprise the effort of extrapolating this 'persona' of his/her ex from past memories of him/her, as well as the effort of integrating the 'persona' into new personal experiences.
These efforts could ensure the survival of the 'persona' as a semi-living entity rather than a dead (inanimate) memory.

The monotony and precise rhythm of the clapping could (but I am not sure) possibly be a depiction of the synthetic/mechanical/unnatural nature of these attempts to create a semi-living thing (the 'persona') from past (semi-dead) memories of the ex-boyfriend/girlfriend.

The song title itself, "stars and sons", might be a reference to the above idea of 'creation', which is similar to the creation of stars from disparate matter, or the creation of children from disparate biological matter.

The fluid and wave-like 'in-out' melody of the bass line might be a reference to intercourse and procreation.
Interestingly, the song seems to refer not just to actual intercourse and procreation, but seems to extrapolate these processes onto psychology (intermixing/conjoining of ideological substances/artifacts; creation of personas).
Thus, it seems to mirror the necessity of physiological and cosmological sexuality (involving the physical body and the physical matter of stellar material) with a similar level of necessity for metaphysical and psychological sexuality (involving the mind, vis the creation of the hypothetical 'persona' from the raw material of information/memories/thoughts/feelings).

Hi!
My interpretation:
"All in the time you went
There's someone that left
This one will know how far I live on"
Perhaps "someone that left" refers to a persona of the other person that is created after the void.
If so, this probably means there are two 'others' in this lover's mind -- one is the real person (who has left him/her), the second is the persona which he/she has created of that other person, in his/her own mind.

"All in the time you went" -- This seems to mean that a significant event (creating the persona) occured in the emotionally intense and short period of time during/after the breakup.

"You can see through the rest
I don't know when, it won't be this time"
The 1st line "You can see through the rest" -- "the rest" might possibly refer to 'the rest' of this guy/girl's life that the other person, in reality, had yet to explore.
The 'persona' though, is able to "see through", since after all, it is the creation of this guy/girl's mind.
"I don't know when, it won't be this time":
Perhaps this refers to the futility of, as said above, the other person getting to know/understand the 'unexplored space' in this person's consciousness/mind -- If so, "I don't know when" could mean hopelessness (no hope of anything happening in the near future); "it won't be this time" could mean to "this time" being a special event in this person's life, that the person has missed due to the breakup.

"This one will know how far I live on"
Perhaps this a romantic line -- it could refer to the life-long persistence of the 'persona' in this person's mind.

"And in a red room
At a distance"
To me, "a red room" could refer to the mental space (desire, consciousness, memory), which I personally associate with the color red. The "room" possibly refers to the dimensions of the mental space(s) in this guy/girl's mind wherein the 'persona' is allowed to exist.
"At a distance" might possibly refer to the distance between this guy/girl's consciousness and the mental entity that is the 'persona'. The distance could be formed by many psychological factors, such as mental idiosyncrasies, forgetfulness, the influence of the person's own personality (which often overshadows or dilutes the 'persona'), and the passage of time (during which, past memories are slowly lost).
"At a distance" might also refer to the distance of separation between his/her significant other in reality and the 'persona'. The two entities share the same identity, yet they are completely separate and have no knowledge of each other's real-time experiences.
As such, the "distance" might refer to the increasing divergence between the real ex-boyfriend/girlfriend and the imitative 'persona'.
Possibly, this guy/girl feels increasingly alienated from his/her ex because the 'persona' is increasingly different from his/her ex in reality. This could be because he/she is no longer in touch with his/her ex and thus has no information about him/her. Hence, the 'persona' gradually loses its convincingness due to the feelings of doubt which accompany the increasing 'information gap'.

I really agree with konichiwaaa.

But can anyone say anything about the title? I mean nobody has discussed why it might be called 'Stars and Sons' which i think is an awkwardly great name!

It seems almost like a conversation between two of those philosophical wanderers that are always searching for themselves... Only song that has a better bassline IMO is Archers of Loaf's 'White Trash Heroes'

BSS's songs remind me of the little voices inside your head; not proper conversations but give you the general jist with as little words as possible, which just adds to the sensation you get.
little words dancing through my ears & into my heart.

I don't think the lead singer sings this song on the album does he? I saw them play and one of the guitar players sung it.

He should sing more often.

Yeah, I don't think I can interpret the meaning of this song any better than you all have done.

I also saw them perform this. It was brilliant.

They're live performance at Berkeley made me crave to hear more. The clapping was probably the best part of the whole night. Everyone got into it and the song was great. I got home and started to listen to it non-stop! This song has a lot of moral you can't really point out the meaning it has too many. generally about life though and how everyone wishes they could look into the future and decide when to die.

I think it deals with death and life. Maybe a game?
"Just wanna know, how far to live on
You're the same when you're living"

He's playing with his own life, trying to know where are the limits. Red refers to blood too.
"You can see through the red" might mean people are scared of dying, but it's only blood and flesh.

Well, that's what i feel from this song!

To me this song is about something or someone that everyone searches for in their lives, without being completely sure what it is. I think theyre telling us how silly it is to be human and think we need something that we cannot name.... just my take
