Lyrics for Grow Up and Blow Away as interpreted by killstar

Grow Up and Blow Away Lyrics
Floating the room two by two from the womb
to the holidays there is no holiday

first double cross her heart
he wants to start a family
needing something to go on

if she weren't writing in blood
she'd bring him her jokes
a new liver
and a shovel for the mile
if he were not knee deep in mud
he'd bring her his jokes
he'd get her a typewriter

if this is the life
why does it feel
so good to die today
blue to grey,
grow up and blow away
if this is the life
why does it feel
so good to die today
blue to grey,
grow up and blow away

nobody knows which street to take
he took the easy way
what was the easy way

first double cross her heart
he wants to start a family
she always thought she would not

if she werent riding in bars
she'd bring him her jokes
a new liver
and a shovel for the mile
if he were not knee deep in mud
he'd bring her his jokes
he'd get her a typewriter

if this is the life
why does it feel
so good to die today
blue to grey,
grow up and blow away
if this is the life
why does it feel
so good to die today
blue to grey,
grow up and blow away

first double cross her heart
he wants to start a family
her body is the baby

if this is the life
why does it feel
so good to die today
blue to grey,
grow up and blow away
if this is the life
why does it feel
so good to die today
blue to grey,
grow up and blow away

blue to grey
brow up and blow away
blue to grey
grow up and blow away
blue to grey
grow up and blow away
blue to grey
grow up and blow away

This song is so beautiful. It's not particularly the music, because if you listen to just the music, it's a little squeaky, but great anyway. It's so gorgeous, about a couple in love, yet so incapable of loving. It reminds me of me and somebody else, this is a wonderful song. So powerful.

I was listening to this a while ago, when I suddenly realized that it was used in a commercial a long time ago. But only this part: "if she weren’t riding in bars
she'd bring him her jokes
a new liver
and a shovel for the mile
if he were not knee deep in mud
he'd bring her his jokes
he'd get her a typewriter

if this is the life
why does it feel
so good to die today"

And that was before I had even heard of Metric. But I realized that I used to turn up the volume on that commercial, because I really liked the song. So even then I was a Metric fan. =D

Funny though... I can't even remember what the commercial was for...

I am truely addicted to this song.

"if this is the life
why does it feel
so good to die today
blue to grey,
grow up and blow away
if this is the life
why does it feel
so good to die today
blue to grey,
grow up and blow away

nobody knows which street to take
he took the easy way
what was the easy way "

it seems to sound like some people believe suicide is the easy way, but no one really knows what the eaisest is but they thing they're doing it.

in the polaroid commercial, they replaced "die" with "fly"

i'm pretty sure the song is about a guy who gets a girl pregnant for the sake of tradition. he apparently "needs something to go on" in terms of his bloodline, and "took the easy way." the singer is singing the irony that the child is no "easy way." "her body is the baby" shows that the child is the important part now, the mother is only a lifeless host.

theres a mistake in the lyrics.

it should be:

"if she werent writing in blood..."

Yeah, it adds more irony to the song. Why else would he get her a typewriter.

i think this song is about a dull marriage that isnt working out so the husband wants to have a baby to spark up the marriage a little bit but the wifes not going for it.

I dont know Emily is a lyrical genius tho, at first I just liked the way Metric's songs sounded but now i have a deeper appreciation for the lyrcis as well.

I love this song. I agree with jtucker, Emily's lyrics are what make metric really stand out. I can hear one of their songs and love it, but then after listening to the lyrics more it's so much better and so much more personal.

But anyway, I think this song is about getting older and giving up on your dreams to follow a more traditional easy lifestyle.

"nobody knows which street to take
he took the easy way
what was the easy way"

That part reminds me of that 'two roads diverged in a wood and I took the one less traveled by' poem. Except I think this is saying the oposite.

And then I think the blue to grey part is just saying how life looks like it has so many opportunities but then when you give up on your dreams and settle for something else it becomes bland and grey. Yeah I guess that's it.

i think its about a girl who is going out with a guy who it idealistic and wants a family etc etc 'first double cross her heart' shows the youth sort of thing.
and grow up and blow away is like grow up, get a clue you know
asumptions aside, its fact that this song rules.

Wow! I suddenly remember that commercial now too. Anyways, I think the song Is about a dissatisfaction with life, when you think its going to get better, it remains the same. tragic and beautiful.

it seems like the guy is killing himself with alcoholism ie knee deep in mud, his own grave, and the new liver thing being he drinks too much.

i think the male is bored with the relationship so he wants to have a kid, and in a way hes doublecrossing her heart as in he doesnt care about her as much as the idea of the family life.

she doesnt really want too but does it for him, and things still suck hence the chorus of the song

Whoever did these lyrics wasn't listening to the song. There are mistakes everywhere. Here is the actual lyrics.

Grow Up and Blow Away
Floating the room
TWO BY TWO
From the womb
To the HOLIDAY
There is no holiday
First double-cross her heart
He wants to start a family
Needing something to go on

If she weren't WRITING IN BLOOD
She'd bring him her jokes
A new liver
And a shovel for the MUD
If he were not knee-deep in mud
He'd bring her his drugs
He'd get her a typewriter

If this is the life
Why does it feel so good to die today?
Blue to gray
Grow up and blow away...

If this is the life
Why does it feel so good to die today?
Blue to gray
Grow up and blow away...

Nobody knows which street to take
He took the easy way
What was the easy way?
First double-cross her heart
He wants to start a family
She always thought she would not.

If she weren't WRITING IN BLOOD
She'd bring him her jokes
A new liver
And a shovel for the MUD
If he were not knee-deep in mud
He'd bring her his drugs
He'd get her a typewriter

If this is the life
Why does it feel so good to die today?
Blue to gray
Grow up and blow away...

If this is the life
Why does it feel so good to die today?
Blue to gray
Grow up and blow away...

First double-cross her heart
He wants to start a family
Her body is the baby.

If this is the life
Why does it feel so good to die today?
Blue to gray
Grow up and blow away...

If this is the life
Why does it feel so good to die today?
Blue to gray
Grow up and blow away...

Blue to gray
Grow up and blow away...
Blue to gray
Grow up and blow away...
Blue to gray
Grow up and blow away...
Blue to gray
Grow up and blow away...

I thought I'd bring up how the themes in this song match up with those presented in "The Awakening" by Kate Chopin.

"The Awakening" is about a woman in the victorian era who's stuck in a situation. She's leading the perfect life, but she's not happy. She ends up living how she's always wanted to, and in the end, she walks out into the ocean, ridding herself of her clothing and ties to that society, and keeps swimming until she can't see the shore.

Her implied suicide is what reminds me most of this song, especially the chorus, "If this is the life/Why does it feel so good to die today?/Blue to gray/Grow up and blow away...

I don't know if Metric's even ever heard of that book, but the relation is impecable.
