One, two, three... well
I ran away from you
That's all I ever do
And though I started here
I ran away from you

I'm gonna come on in
And see it through

I ran away from you
That's all I ever do

And when I heard you call to
Come back to me
And though I should stay
I don't have the stomach to

Everyone I know
Says I'm a fool mess with you
Everyone I know
Says it's a stupid thing to do

I have your love on call
And yet my day is not so full
There might be nothing left to do
So I ran away from you

I'm gonna come on in
My eyes are closed

I can feel it there
The sun's so close
I'm gonna come on out
And burn the sky

A star arose in my own cage
I'm stuck in line
And in a cage

Just a single star
I sing for

Everyone I know
Says I'm a fool mess with you
Everyone I know
Says it's a stupid thing to do

I have your love on call
And yet my day is not so full
And I did not know what to do
And so I ran away from you

My Interpretation:I think this song is about the singer feeling everything hAs been done in the relationship so he or she feels like they should run away from the other person. There may be nothing new or exciting to look forward to in the relationship so they run but they feel that the person the ran froms love will always be there to come back to. Everyone thinks their decision to run is stupid but they dont know how the singer feels

General Comment:I undrestand what he wanted to say, but I still don't understand these words:

"A star arose in my own cage
    I'm stuck in line
    And in a cage
    Just a single star
    I sing for"

What does that mean? Somehow, it doesn't relly fit with the explanation of the rest if the song

General Comment:Before I read everyones post and get influenced on how I perceive this song, I wanna take the time out to put out my thoughts on the song. From what I could imagine, this song is written from the mind of someone that is constantly on the move and running away from every opportunity presented to him to open up to someone and fall again (all over again), he takes it for granted that he may find love, but is convinced by thought (hence the line 'everyone i know') that love should be put off and that it may be something he hesitates to get involve in because of the damage cause to him/her in previous situations.
I take this line to mean that maybe he still waiting for that self-actualization before he gets tangled in another dangerous situation.

General Comment:This song really hits me at a personal level (a lot of coldplay songs do that to me)... it actually relates really closely to a situation i've been in for the past three years.

To me, I Ran Away is about the singer who has an on-and-off relationship with a friend or lover. Whether or not they actually get together and have sex/hook up doesn't matter. The person he is singing about has really strong feelings for the singer but he doesnt want to commit, as someone has said before, or he has some type of hang up. He may or may not really like the person, but there is a feeling he has deep down that is disabling him from returning her feelings, or confirming them.

"I have your love on call
And yet my day is not so full"

i think that this means that even though she loves him, and he might like her, or could develop feelings for her, he is always worried that something better might come along, or he hasn't experienced everything he wants to before he can be with her comfortably.

this hits close to home for me.. there's been this guy who i really adore, and he "loves" me, but every time something has come close to happening, i always skip out on him. i have his "love on call" but i always freak, or am interested in someone else at that moment, or something. eventually he will stop warming back up to me, i know it. it's not fair to him, and "i'm a fool to mess with" him because he deserves so much better, he really is an awesome guy. but there's always that one single hang up.

General Comment:to me, this is the warmest sounding Coldplay song. i feel weird inside (that's what she said!) just after the piano solo and the guitar feedback (3:44ish). it's like a warm blanket of sound i wanna curl up in.

General Comment:I think this song is about cheating. There's this guy who has a perfect girl, and still he feels trapped in a cage so he cheats,"everyone i know says it's a stupid thing to do" and "i ran away from you" which is what he feels like doing from his girl, even though he loves her.

General Comment:This makes a lot of sense to me...
I broke up with somebody just a few weeks ago. He's a drug addict and I'm a straight A student, so of course my dad hates him. But he was the first guy I ever really fell for, and even though all of my family and friends think he isn’t worth my time, I can’t help but miss him. Even though we’ve broken up, we still see each other here and there.

General Comment:this song portrays one person's unwillingness to commit, and yet desires some sort of fruitful contentment from this whole affair. it is essentially a metaphor for 'running away from your problems', or in this case the person that is the embodiment of them. however, it is not you who believes that the person is the root cause but the society that is dictating you to believe it is. a very lose-lose situation, and a classic tale of the independent struggle. are you going to face your choice inspite of adversary in order to live at peace with yourself (and who decides if you really will be at peace), or will you just flake it off because no change can be brought anyway? please one, please many or please just yourself? i feel that is the big picture that the song is trying to get across, although this scenario can be applied to various people, relationships and life situations.

General Comment:I'm pretty sure it's "Will." He starts out the song by drumming.
