Lyrics for Admit It as interpreted by trinket

Admit It Lyrics
Despite your pseudo-bohemian appearance
That vaguely leftist doctrine of beliefs
You know nothing about art or sex
That you couldn’t read in any trendy New York underground fashion magazine
Prototypical non-conformist
You are a vacuous soldier of the thrift store Gestapo
You adhere to a set of standards and tastes
That appear to be determined by an unseen panel of hipster judges (bullshit)
Giving a thumbs up or thumbs down to incoming and outgoing trends and styles of music and art
Go analog baby, you’re so post-modern
You’re diving face forward into a antiquated path
It’s disgusting, its offensive don’t stick your nose up at me

Yeah, what do you have to say for yourself
Whoah, whoah, whoah, whoah

You spend your time sitting in circles with your friends
Pontificating to each other forever competing for that one moment of self aggrandizing glory
In which you hog the intellectual spotlight
Holding dominion over the entire shallow pointless conversation
Oh we’re not worthy when you walk by a group of quote unquote normal people
You chuckle to yourself patting yourself on the back as you scoff
With the same superiority complex
Shared by the high school jocks who made your life a living hell
And makes you a slave to the competitive capitalist dogma
You spend every moment of your waking life bitching about

Yeah, what do you have to say for yourself
Whoah, whoah, whoah, whoah
And I say yeah, what do you have to say for yourself
Whoah, whoah, whoah, whoah

Cause I’m proud of my life and the things that I have done
Proud of myself and the loner I’ve become
You’re free to whine, it will not get you far
I do just fine, my car and my guitar

Proud of my life and the things that I have done
Proud of myself and the loner I’ve become
You’re free to whine, it will not get you far
I do just fine, my car and my guitar, yeah

Well let me tell you this, I am shamelessly self-involved
I spend hours in front of the mirror, making my hair elegantly disheveled
I worry about how this album will sell
Because I believe that it will determine the amount of sex I will have in the future
I self medicate with drugs and alcohol to treat my extreme social anxiety

You are a faker (admit it)
You are a fraud (admit it)
Yeah, you’re living a lie (yeah) living a lie (yeah) you’re life is living a lie
You don’t impress me (admit it)
You don’t intimidate me (admit it)
Why don’t you bow down, get on the ground, walk this fucking plank

Yeah, what do you have to say for yourself
Whoah, whoah, whoah, whoah
And I say yeah

I’m proud of my life and the things that I have done
Proud of myself and the loner I’ve become
You’re free to whine, it will not get you far
I do just fine, my car and my guitar, guitar go!

I'm drift drift drift drifting yeah
I'm drift drift drift drifting yeah oh

And I am done with this
I wanna taste the breeze of every great city
My car and my guitar
So you come to me, made of these, urgent unfulfilled
Oh no no no no no
I have when I'm dead I'll rest
But that's away still
When I'm dead I'll rest, I'll rest

this song is talking about the type of people who make up half their fanbase.

mainly the fat girls who think they can crowdsurf at their shows.

ok not really the fat girls, but seriously? you weigh 250 lbs, dont crowd surf...

"does it really matter if the song has a meaning to it? no, it sounds amazing and the music is great, fun lyrics if you just listen to it without having to OVERANALIZE EVERYTHING. jesus. get over it. but yeah, the scene hype, kids who try to be different cause its 'cool'...whatever, if they wanna be like that, let 'em. screw them.
tihs song is awesome though
you know a lot of 'scenesters' listened or still do listen to say anything, i just find it ironic...seeing as they make fun of them."

No. There's no point in music having meaning. Nor is there any point in dedicating an ENTIRE WEBSITE TO DISCUSSING THE FUCKING MEANINGS OF THESE FUCKING SONGS.

You should just off yourself Elliot Smith style.

Idiot.

In my opinion, this song is just Max saying that everybody is conforming. This is him telling people that he is proud of what he is and is hoping that people will be themselves. This is a stand against stereotypes and conformists.

"You adhere to a set of standards and tastes
That appear to be determined by an unseen panel of hipster judges "

It says it all.

ok so yeah he does mention things that may be associated with certain trends, but i think it's about conformism in general. It doesn't need to be attatched to any 'Scene'

Most of you people irritate the shit out of me.

This song clearly mocks the mindless followers of the new breeds of trends of this generation, although not once is the term "EMO" used. Yes, there are segments suggestive of pointed mockery at this particular group of people, but I think generally Max was proclaiming detest against all kids these days that find themselves so above anyone else for being an 'individual', when really they're simply following a code that states that normalcy is lame. You don't have to be "EMO" to be a mindless, trend follower.

At the same time the song is ironic, because even to make fun of these mindless cliques for their pretentious attitudes - [emo, punk, goth, etc.] especially of one in particular - is an implication that you're better than whoever you're making fun of. So who's pretentious now?

In my opinion, everyone on this forum that targeted a certain group of people/the 'EMOs' as being the subject of Bemis' rant are exactly those who he was ridiculing.

It about hypocrisy
its about how people pretend to be something they are not
its about how fake people are nowadays
its about how people can talk the talk but cant walk the walk
"you are a faker, you are a fraud, you are living a lie living a lie your life is living a lie"
seriously just listen to it
Its pretty self explanatory
GREAT SONG btw

I think the lyrics in this song can far exceed the scene in Los Angeles, as some people have stated in their comments, I think it is meant for the entire western civilization, if not, for people all over the world. In my opinion, it talks of those who claim to be non-conformists, but conform to another type of lifestyle, just; it’s not the ‘mainstream’ way. And then they contemptuous towards those who have constantly looked down their noses at the self-proclaimed ‘non-conformists’ they judge those who have judged them all their lives, looking down their noses at others.
All they know how to do is talk, they haven’t really experienced much, they know what you can learn from books, or magazines.

‘Prototypical nonconformist’
- typical non-conformist, they really aren’t individuals, as they probably claim to be.
‘Don’t stick your nose up at me’
-showing their stuck up natures

They’re people who sit in circles with friends and have their little ‘intellectual’ conversations. Each one of them wants to be that one person to take the spotlight and just say something which everybody is in awe over, to be in the spotlight. They think they’re better than those ‘normal’ people (whoever they are), and they laugh at them, judge them. It’s the same attitude they’ve had to fight against throughout their lives. Just, another form of control for them – to put down others who they think are conformists, or empty-headed, not realising they are completely hypocritical.

Cause I’m proud of my life and the things that I have done
Proud of myself and the loner I’ve become
You’re free to whine, it will not get you far
I do just fine, my car and my guitar

There, he’s talking about himself, how he’s not adhering to any standards, he’s just doing his own thing, and he’s proud of it all. He’s not going to sit there and whine about other people or complain, he’s content with his life, his car and his guitar.

He’s just being really honest here; he’s not speaking about things he hasn’t experienced.

This song makes me so angry, but in a good way. It's easily one of my favourite songs of all time, even more so since I've started University. On one side you've got a bunch of dumb, mainstream idiots who listen to Radio 1 and think going to shitty clubs and drinking all the time is heaven and on the other side you've wannabe bohemian arseholes who think they're so fucking cool because they wear skinny jeans or brown shoes. This song is about the latter though. I see these types of people everywhere, people who dress all retro and sit around smoking weed and pretending they know something about anything. They're hypocritical, arrogant, hipsters who care more about their image than anything else, the kind who go out of their way to be different. The kids who fit into the middle ground are the ones who are the real misfits. "I'm proud of my life and the things that I have done, proud of myself, and the loner I've become".

Also The Cribs song "Mirror Kissers".

It's okay when you say you see people like those described in this song, it's hard when people you thought you knew turn into them right in front of you.

i dont think this song is about "emos" or "scenesters"
by the lyrics, im pretty sure. its about hipsters. and alot of the people that live in l.a. and shop in thrift stores, and complain about bush and think they know everything about indie music and art.
its also about, being a hypocrit.
about those people, bashing the "normal people" but in the end being exactly like them. and than about max, not conforming to these things, even if it means having no friends, and being proud of who he is

okkay. ive found the truth. heres an interveiw with max about this song:

"Admit It!!" is a brilliantly scathing anthem aimed directly at this new "indie movement": were there any specific events or incidents that inspired you to pen the lyrics, or were you more motivated over the general feeling of the "scene".

I grew up in L.a, which at the time (turn of the century) had this scene revolving around certain bands made of people who were so afraid to be sincere that they were almost mean, and boy did they prosper. I moved away from them to go to school at Sarah Lawrence College in New York because I thought there would be more integrity on the opposite coast and it was there that I learned shame and pretension wasn’t constricted to any group of people; we are all guilty of it. The song isn’t about “fall out boy fans” or “hipsters”. It’s about anyone who judges other people because they’re “normal.” It’s about you and I because everyone does it sometimes. The only thing you can do is fight that ego and be proud of the things in your life that are true

I wouldn't say it's about one specific category of people. its basically calling out all the fakes that conform to certain trends to try and find their place in the "music scene." While there are some who genuinly follow these trends because its simply their style and its not their fault there are people copying them, this song is fucking fantastic in that it calls out the ones that are fake (ex: dress emo or punk but when you talk to them you realize they're actually preppy). So I'm pretty sure I repeated myself in there but whatever i got my point across...i hope.

I really don't like this song. It is a pointless argument against the Indie cult and how having a label in their non-conformist style of culture makes them hypocrites.

It fits everything. Indie people tend to have less peers, often follow trends in thrift stores, tend to be judgemental of the music they hear, etc.

On a lot of points, he's right. In fact, he's correct about every single person who belongs to that Indie cult who can't do it right. The poor dumbass, unfortunately, doesn't understand the actual core beliefs of the cult and didn't even bother to look into what it is about while almost everyone in Indie can realize a person of his kind with a single look.

I'm no Indie guy, myself. I like some of the stuff they produce like I love some of the stuff Say Anything sometimes produces, but this is a thumbs-down for me. He really doesn't need to attract attention to himself in this fashion. He's basically putting down a person who doesn't want to feel bad for being a loner. I mean, wouldn't BEING ALONE be enough? The only thing in this song that wasn't truly stated a million times before is that his ignorance is bliss.

Indie people are indeed hypocrites, belonging to a cult with a label, sure, but that's about their only problem. Now, if you really wanted ALL of the benefits, you wouldn't bother with a label and just say that you "like" Indie stuff, along with whatever else YOU like.

Don't be judgemental, don't be a hypocrite, don't be a cut-down-inducing asshole, just be you and be happy.
