If it makes you less sad, I will die by your hand.
I hope you find out what you want.
I already know what I am.
And if it makes you less sad, we'll start talking again.
And you can tell me how vile I already know that I am.
I'll grow old and start acting my age.
I'll be a brand new day in a life that you hate.
A crown of gold.
A heart that's harder than stone.
And it hurts a whole lot, but it's missed when it's gone.
Call me a safe bet.
I'm betting I'm not.
I'm glad that you can forgive.
I'm only hoping as time goes, you can forget.
If it makes you less sad, I'll move out of the state.
You can keep to yourself.
I'll keep out of your way.
And if it makes you less sad, I'll take your pictures all down.
Every picture you paint, I will paint myself out.
It's cold as a tomb, and it's dark in your room,
when I sneak to your bed to pour salt in your wounds.
So call it quits or get a grip. Say you wanted a solution.
You just wanted to be missed.
Call me a safe bet.
I'm betting I'm not.
I'm glad that you can forgive.
I'm only hoping as time goes, you can forget
You are calm and reposed.
Let your beauty unfold.
Pale white, like the skin stretched over your bones.
Spring keeps you ever close.
You are second hand smoke.
You are so fragile and thin.
Standing trial for your sins.
Holding onto yourself the best you can.
You are the smell before rain.
You are the blood in my veins.
Call me a safe bet.
I'm betting I'm not.
I'm glad that you can forgive.
I'm only hoping as time goes, you can forget.
I hope you find out what you want.
I already know what I am.

but the girl won't let go of the boy even if it hurts to keep holding on and the boy can't be without her "and it hurts a whole lot, but it's missed when it's gone"
and even tho the girl keeps trying to make it better, more so for him.. all she wanted was love "So call it quits or get a grip. You say you wanted a solution, you just wanted to be missed."
but the boy keeps telling her, he can't change who he is...not even for her
"And you can tell me how vile I already know that I am. It'll be a brand new day in a life that you hate. I'll sneak in your room to pour salt in your wounds".
and the boy sees what he is doing to her, he is telling her he will leave if that's what she wants, if it makes her less sad. He believe the best for her is not forgiving him over and over for hurting her, but just completely forgetting him.
Yet. no matter what he does to her "You are so fragile and thin" she won't give up on the person she loves, even if it hurts "holding onto yourself the best you can."
No matter how of a pessimist he is, she still stays optimistic and hopes for the best "Call me a safe bet. I'm betting I'm not.".
(If it makes you hurt any less, you can kill me. [Metaphorically, I'd hope.])
I hope you find out what you want.
I already know what I am.
And if it makes you less sad, we'll start talking again.
And you can tell me how vile I already know that I am.
(If it makes you feel any better, we can start talking again like we used to. You can tell me how much of a jerk I am even though I already know.)
I'll grow old and start acting my age.
I'll be a brand new day, in a life that you hate.
(I'll start acting like I know I should, and although things will be different, you'll never be able to look past what I keep doing.)
A crown of gold,
a heart that's harder than stone.
And it hurts a whole lot, but it's missed when it's gone.
(Although I'll miss our relationship once it's finally gone, I know if I stay I'll keep hurting you.)
Call me a safe bet, I'm betting I'm not.
Glad that you can forgive, only hoping as time goes... you can forget.
(It seems like you can trust me, but I'm not good for you. Although I'm glad you can forgive me for hurting you so much, I just hope you'll stop looking to the past.)
If it makes you less sad, I'll move out of this state. You can keep you yourself. I'll keep out of your way.
(If it will make you hurt less, I'll move away so you won't have to see me ever again and be reminded of what I did to you.)
If it makes you less sad, I'll take your pictures all down.
Every picture you paint, I will paint myself out.
(I'll get rid of all of the evidence we were ever together so you don't have to be reminded of the pain everyday. I'll remove myself from your memories altogether.)
It's cold as a tomb and it's dark in your room when I sneak to your bed to pour salt on your wounds.
(Every time I come to see you, I feel like I'm just hurting you more.)
"So call it quits or get a grip. You say you wanted a solution, you just wanted to be missed."
(Stop playing games with me and figure out where you want to go from here. You say you want to fix things, when you really just want me to fight to keep us together.)
You are calm and reposed, let your beauty unfold. Pale white like the skin stretched over your bones.
(You're holding yourself together.)
Spring keeps you ever close, you are second hand smoke.
You are so fragile and thin, standing trial for your sins.
Holding on to yourself the best you can.
You are the smell before rain, you are the blood in my veins.
(My self-destructive behavior is hurting you in the process. You're so fragile and have to pay for your mistakes. I compare you to the anticipation when it seems like it's going to rain even though it might not, meaning you're expecting me to do things but I keep letting you down over and over again. But I love you and you're keeping me alive?)
Maybe he's unsure and she keeps on grasping on to the relationship and keeping it going, hoping that at some point she'll finally be missed--showing that he cares.
I'm in a pretty similar situation as the guy, and it seems a lot like she's the one who's stopping things from ending.
The piece I was reading used the word 'Petrichor' - the actual scientific name that describes the smell that we associate with rain. I looked up this word 'Petrichor' and found: "Petrichor (from Greek 'petra' meaning stone, + 'ichor' the fluid that flows in the veins of the gods in Greek mythology) is the name of the scent of rain on dry earth."
This astounded me, surely the "blood in my veins" line must be referring to this? It's far too much of a coincidence. This has just made me appreciate Jesse's lyrical genius to a whole new level... Such an obscure phrase, but ties two beautiful yet seemingly unconnected lines so perfectly together.
I think this is CLEARLY about her dreaming about him. I say this because I've been in her role, to an extent. We'd been dating a while and she said she loved me and I told her emphatically that I felt the same. Several days later she broke up me, saying she'd lost interest. I was crushed and though we tried to get back together a couple times it never worked out, she always changed her mind.
After the longest time I was starting to get over her, but one night I had this dream about her and even if just for a slight moment we were together again in the dream and I felt that vast array of emotions that being with the one you love is. Then I woke up. I almost wanted to cry and it definitly stung, like 'putting salt into a wound that was trying to heal'. So, I'm pretty sure he's not literally sneaking into her room, it's a metaphor, and a beautiful one at that.
The rest of the song, is superb as well and relates to my situation, though the roles are reversed. I don't think the rest needs any explanation, atleast what hasn't been already. Just a great song.
"when i sneak in your bed,
to out salt in your wounds..."
everytime he's around her, she feels like he's rubbing it in, making the pain worse.
"call it quits it get a grip
said you wanted a solution, you just want it to be missed"
particularly speaks to me, and my current relationship. i was cheated on, still love him, but still can't trust him. even though he assured me nothing like that will ever happen again. if she can't let it go, she needs to end everything with him or just accept, then forget the past. she wants things resolved, yet she likes to bring it up, perhaps in spite.
it always gets to me....... great song...

The title really tells it all. I think it means that the boy not loving someone his girlfriend/wife anymore(the shot) and lied about it to make them happy (effectively blocking it).
The only problem is that she found out and hates him.
