The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
I woke up early this morning around 4 AM
With the moon shining bright as headlights on the interstate
I pulled the covers over my head and tried to catch some sleep
But thoughts of us kept keeping me awake
Ever since you found yourself in someone else's arms
I've been tryin' my best to get along
But that's okay
There's nothing left to say, but
Take your records, take your freedom
Take your memories, I don't need 'em
Take your space and take your reasons
But you'll think of me
And take your cat and leave my sweater
'Cause we have nothing left to weather
In fact I'll feel a whole lot better
But you'll think of me, you'll think of me
I went out driving tryin' to clear my head
I tried to sweep out all the ruins that my emotions left
(I guess I'm) I guess I'm feeling just a little tired of this
And all the baggage that seems to still exist
It seems the only blessin' I have left to my name
Is not knowing what we could have been
What we should have been
So
Take your records, take your freedom
Take your memories, I don't need 'em
Take your space and take your reasons
But you'll think of me
And take your cat and leave my sweater
'Cause we have nothing left to weather
In fact I'll feel a whole lot better
But you'll think of me
Someday I'm gonna run across your mind
But don't worry, I'll be fine
I'm gonna be alright
While you're sleeping with your pride
Wishin' I could hold you tight
I'll be over you
And on with my life
So take your records, take your freedom
Take your memories, I don't need 'em
And take your cat and leave my sweater
'Cause we have nothing left to weather
In fact I'll feel a whole lot better
But you'll think of me
So take your records, take your freedom
Take your memories, I don't need 'em
Take your space and all your reasons
But you'll think of me
And take your cat and leave my sweater
'Cause we got nothing left to weather
In fact I'll feel a whole lot better
But you'll think of me, you'll think of me, yeah
Mmhm
And you're gonna think of me
Mm, yeah
Ooh someday baby, someday
Mm ooh, mm mm, oh yeah
Think of me, mmhm, baby darling
No no, do do do do, no no
With the moon shining bright as headlights on the interstate
I pulled the covers over my head and tried to catch some sleep

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.
Magical
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
This song is definitely one of his best...it's basically a polite F-you to a girl who didn't appreciate him and cheated on him...about moving on and knowing that this isnt the end of you, you'll be fine...but maybe, just maybe the one who ruined things will feel guilty about it while you're moving on. And the best line in the whole song, the one that hits home: "It seems the only blessing I have left to my name/Is not knowing what we could have been/What we should have been." So wistful but empowering...
Very relatable for anyone who's gone through a tough break-up song.
Often, the one who breaks up with the other person is the one who eventually realizes it was a mistake, and misses the one she broke up with, but by the time that happens, the other person has already moved on.
"In fact I'll feel a whole lot better, but you'll think of me"
After 11 years together, my husband left me in July for another woman. Around that same time, I discovered this song. When he first left, I was destroyed. Couldn't eat...couldn't sleep...lost thirty pounds. The more time goes on, the stronger I get, and I do know that one day he'll think of me....and he'll want me back, and i'll be on with my life. They laugh at me at work....when it comes on the radio i turn it up and sing along. Loudly and badly. This song is the ultimate "what does not kill me will make me strong" song.
i was in a simular situation, not as bad. =] i'm happy for you!
this song helped me see things more clearly too.
@TammyR I hope you’re doing better these days. And those coworkers of yours were dicks for laughing at you simply for connecting to a song about literally being cheated on. That’s not something a person laughs over. You were in pain and needed therapy.
I think this song is honestly the BEST song i have ever come across. I love it. He's talking about how he just needs to move on, and he's singing about how hard it is to get past all the memories. he doesn't want to move on, but he has no choice, and he's telling the woman that he's gonna run across her mind eventually, and she's gonna miss him and realize what a mistake she's made...but there will be no second chance for her cuz he'll be gone.
I always hated that damn cat anyway...
yeah the live acostic version is a LOT better!
The extra verse is:
When you're lying alone in the middle of the night Wishing i was there to hold you tight That's when you're gonna think about me baby Yeah in the middle of the night when you're lying alone Baby you'll wish i was coming home But i ain't ever coming home You shouldn't have treated me this way Why did you go and break my heart Baby didn't you know how much i loved you Someday baby
The acousitc version i feel has much more anger in it! awesome though
Like multiple people that have responded I know exactly what he's trying to say. My boyfriend of over a year left me for a girl he dated before me. This song describes everything I've been going through.
Amazing song. The fact that it's not angry or aggressive, it's got a calm and resolute tone to it. He isn't bitter and he doesn't belittle his ex, he's already moving on. the singer is absolutely confidant that he'll be fine and the person who left him will be the one who'll always regret their actions makes it so empowering and inspiring.
Yes, the CD version is great, but it gets an added dimension when he performs it live. He includes his own bitter verse at the end that practically bursts the veins in his neck. Though he sings with heart he did not write the song. Three of his Nashville writer friends did. Darrell Brown. Ty Lacy. Dennis Matkosky.
The live version can be seen on CMT's 'Crossroads' where he sings and plays with John Fogerty. Or at Sessions@AOL. The guitar picking is quite fabulous as well.
Great song. this remind me of my hurtful relationship.hearing this song really help me get over the girl and move on.It's been at least a year now and i still feel the same way about her as i always do. I always thought that she would be the one but i guess i was wrong. If she were to come back to me,i'll be stupid enough to take her back.
Cause of her,i have lost faith in people, it's so hard to trust anyone ever again.
I think that this song is about a love that didnt happen. She fell for somebody else and left him high and dry. At first he was so upset, but he moved on and when she tried to get him back, after she realized she made a mistake, he didnt want her anymore. He realized he deserved better and that everything happens for a reason, even though he missed her terribly
