Silver leaves are spinning round
Take my hand as we go down and down and down
Looking for water
But I lost God in a New York minute
Don't know about you but my heart's not in it
(Looking looking looking)
I'm looking for water
I'm looking for water
(Looking looking looking)
I can't breathe the air
Can't raise the fight
'Cause all we've got left is a beat in the night
And I'm
Looking for water
Looking for water
Looking for water
Looking looking

Take my hand as we go down and down
Leave it all behind nothing will be found
I'm looking for water
I'm looking for water
Looking for water
(Looking looking)
I'm looking for water
Looking everywhere
Looking for water
Looking here and there
I'm looking for water
I'm looking for water
Looking for water
(Looking looking)

I can't live in this cage
I can't eat this candy
To the ends of the Earth
To this pain in my head
The look in your eyes
That never means never
The dawns early light
Baby dumb is forever

(Looking looking)
(Looking looking)

Looking for water
(Looking looking)
I'm looking for water
Looking for water
(Looking looking)
I'm looking for water
Looking for water
(Looking looking)
I'm looking for water
Looking for water
(Looking looking)
I'm looking for water
Looking for water
(Looking looking)
I'm looking for water
Looking for water

Looking for Water? Let's see... I think it MAY be a reference to the movie THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH, in which the handsome and talented Mister Bowie portrayed a naive, tangerine-tressed, angel-faced spaceman who landed on Earth in search of -- yup, water! So, it MAY refer to that movie and its otherworldly hero

"I can't live in this cage, I can't eat this candy." may be a reference to Bowie's alien character's inability to completely emulate the customs and lifestyles of Earth folk.

I believe this song is David talking about religion. How?

When he mentions "I lost God in a New York minute", made me realize, he's looking for something to save his life (looking for water), and when he says

I can't live in this cage, I can't eat this candy The edge of the earth to the spin in my head The look in your eyes and never means never The dawn's early light, baby, dark is forever",

I believe that's him saying that he can't keep on living without a firm belief in something, because hes going to live a terrible life after.

I don't know, that's just what i thought about the song.

I think the song is much darker than that. It sounds like it was written from the POV of one of the people who jumped from the WTC on September 11th.

Also, the correct lyric "I lost God in a New York minute"

Check out the Zoos of Berlin cover. I love it more than the original.
