Lyrics for Heart-Shaped Box (Nirvana cover) as interpreted by somewhat`damaged

Heart-Shaped Box (Nirvana cover) Lyrics
She eyes me like a Pisces when I am weak
I've been locked inside your Heart-Shaped box for weeks
I've been drawn into your magnet tar pit trap
I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black

Hey
Wait
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hey
Wait
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice

Meat-eating orchids forgive no one just yet
Cut myself on angel's hair and baby's breath
Broken hymen of your highness I'm left black
Throw down your umbilical noose so I can climb right back

Hey
Wait
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hey
Wait
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice

ummm...i dont think it sounds good since its one of Nirvana's songs and it just sounds kinda really werrid when she sings it. She could probably pull off singin another bands song, but nobody can ever really pull off another Nirvana song.

I don't think it sounds nearly as good as Kurt when he sings it but still it sounds alright, not the best though.

When i saw this one i thought it was probably quite wrong! But the more i think about it.... it's alright really! Not as good as the Nirvana version PROBABLY but that is just because they sing differently, so not so much "not as good" but different!

Why do crap bands keep covering good songs? Evanescence can line up alongside Destiny's Child and Michelle Branch as people who have ruined good Nirvana songs.

shadow, I don't think you fully comprehend music then. Yes, Amy didn't measure up to Kurt. Hell, no one can. But if you're going to let something like that ruin a Nirvana song for you, then you really don't understand music at all.

Shadow its not crap bands (im not saying Ev are crap because im in fact an Ev fan) that ruin clasic songs its crap bands that are completely oblivious to the meaning of a song. (see All Saints - Under The Bridge) Amy and the rest of the band are fans of Nirvana and know the meanings of the songs. Michelle Branch and Destiny's Child just saw them as peviously successful songs they could sing to try and make money.

Also I agree with all of you (apart from shadow) that this song is good but it cant be as good as the original.

I completely agree with nirvanapunk.

I think she manages it allright. but yeah, like said 10 times before now, nobody can do a nirvana cover as good or better then the original.

I get where james23485 is coming from, that it is shitty where bands or artists cover brilliant, deep songs, with no understanding of the meaning, but I also think that it is terrible when bands cover songs they love and do a piss poor job at it.

If it was me, I would want to make the absolutely best attempt at it I could, and if it came out sounding anything less than awesome, I wouldn't put it out, because to me, that is an insult to the band you love.

NDEvanescenceFan, I don't think you fully comprehend what I was saying then.
I meant that they took good songs and made crappy covers of them. Juat because Michelle Branch can't play Heart-Shaped Box doesn't mean I'm gonna stop listenign to Nirvana. It's going a bit far to assuume that that's what I was saying.
And about bands not being able to match up to the original, I don't blame a band for that. When a band covers a song, their usually acknowledging that that band did something special, so it's not fair to hold it against the band that's covering it..... as long as they do something special with it. If they improve on it (which is rare) or turn it into something completely new (check out A Perfect Circle's new album, eMOTIVe) or at least do a decent job with it (Faith No More covering War Pigs by Sabbath, and most of what's on the Nativity in Black albums). Evanescence did change the song a bit, but I personally thought it was crap and changed the essence of what was special about it in the first place. Especially when one of the special things about the song was how personal it was to Kurt. I'm not even a huge Nirvana fan, but this really is a soulless cover, and that's the main thing that makes it crap.

As for James23485, what makes you think these guys kept the spirit of the song alive? Just being Nirvan fans doesn't count for anything much if the whole messsage of the song is lost. Speaking of which, nobody here has actually mentioned the meaning or message of the song. That's not unusual, but if you guys are gonna be so insistent that they were true to the meaning, you might actually want to mention it as an afterthought or something.

Shadow,
I'm not the one who insulted Evanescence calling them a 'crap band'.
From my perspective it sounded like you flat-out let them ruin the song for you. Perhaps you should re-think your words before you post them eh?

It's a okay cover. I'm not saying it's the worst I'm heard, as I like it enough for it to be on my MP3. But nothing beat the original.

Maynord james keenan is the best vocalist and coverer of songs of our time. Now nirvana on the other hand, i hate to break it to all your nirvana fans, but nirvana is the downfall of rock and roll as it should have been. They made catchy songs, with absolutely no artistry whatsoever. no mystery, after 3 months of playing guitar you could play every nirvana song on their cds. they were the downfall.

Shadow, out of curiosity. If you're so against Evanescence and I quote " Why do crap bands..." then what are you doing in the Evanescence section anyway? Why were you listening to them in the first place?

I don't listen to them, but they're played everywhere, so I end up hearing them anyway. Most fans of mainstream music don't realize that most people can't avoid this stuff, it's everywhere. I heard this song because my sister likes it, for some reason. I am here because I was disgusted and felt like expressing my feelings. Anyway, I think my posts have been more valid than most hate comments -- They take something that has meaning and significance, and then insult it by covering it to try to make themselves seem like legitimate artists. It's no different form TATU covering a SMiths song.

True, you have some point of maturity to your posts. Thank you for that. However, I love Evanescence's cover of Heart Shaped Box and believe it is a very emotional song, even if it hasn't kept its original 'meaning.' Remind me, what's the purpose of music? That'll warrant a different answer from every person here. But I believe music is to be personally interpreted and fitted to your own life. And as such, I believe that Evanescence need not convey the same emotions with this cover as Nirvana itself did.

So, no offense, but I think most all of you are wrong. You can deal with that. It isn't as though my opinions hold any more worth than yours. They're just different, another perspective from which to see things.

And if my comment seems disoriented, it's to be blamed on the prose bits I seem to constantly have stuck in my mind as of late.

See, I can appreciate your opinion. It's just most of the people here (ndevanescencefan et al) come across as idiots. I basically came here talking about how so many people have insulted songs that actually mean something by doing shitty, meaningless covers of them (not just Nirvana songs). I mentioned my sister listened to this? Well she didn't even know it was a Nirvana song until I told her. I'm not even much of a Nirvana fan here, but I still feel disgusted by this. What really pissed me off is when people started talking about how it keeps the message alive and how I don't understand music, which is complete bullshit. Like I said earlier, I feel like they're trying to show people "hey! We're legitimate artists! See, we're playing actual songs!" Cos that's what they do with their own music, they write lyrics that just sound meaningful and try to pass them off as being amotional. But that's just my opinion, so you can disagree if you want and you don't have to attack me for expressing it. While I disagree with LaDiablo, at least he (she?) seems like one of the few people here who's able to do that instead of just acting like an idiot. So thanks (even though you actually like this).

I think Evanescence has very meaningful songs, and they write their own music. So who can blame them for doing some covers? So what? I personally don't like this cover much, just because I don't think phrases like "eat your cancer" should be coming out of Amy's mouth. :) It just sounds odd to me. But I think they did the best they could on this one, and if they liked doing it, then that's great! Go for it, try something new! Fans will still love you even if they don't like one cover you did, and they know that.
