"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
I, I, I love little girls
They make me feel so good
I love, little girls
They make me feel so bad
When they're around
They make me feel
Like I'm the only guy in town
I love, little girls
They make me feel so good
They don't care if I'm a one-way mirror
They're not frightened by my cold exterior
They don't, ask me questions
They don't, want to scold me
They don't, look for answers
They just, want to hold me
Isn't this fun?
Isn't this what life's all about?
Isn't this a dream come true?
Isn't this a nightmare too?
Oh, oh, oh I love little girls
They make me feel so good
I love, little girls
They make me feel so, bad
When they're around
They make me feel
Like I'm the only guy in town
I love, little girls
They make me feel so, good
They don't care about my inclinations
They're not frightened by my revelations
Uh oh (uh oh), take a second (take a second)
Uh oh (uh oh), it's a mistake (it's a mistake)
Uh oh (uh oh), I'm in trouble (I'm in trouble)
Uh oh (uh oh), the little girl was just too little
Too little, too little, too little, too little
Isn't this what life's all about?
Isn't this a dream come true?
Isn't this a nightmare too?
And I don't care, what people say
And I don't care, what people think
And I don't care, how I look
When I'm down my street
They make me feel so--
I love, little girls
They don't care if I'm a one-way mirror
They don't care about my cold exterior
They don't (they don't), ask me questions (ask me questions)

Hayalperest
Hayalperest
This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere.
In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
No Surprises

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
Magical
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
Well, I shall agree with Quazimofo. That is mainly what the song is about. However, Oingo was attacked on many occasions for this SCANDALOUS!song, which brought about Danny's explanation about the lyrics. He apparently had seen many wannabe movie producers riding around in their cars with very young girls, and it disgusted him so much to the extent that he wrote this song. He also added how small and immature the girls looked that they wouldn't ask any questions as to what they were doing - they would simply DO it. It's another one of Danny's songs that, although sounds incredulous to hear, really has something serious and mature behind it. I'd think its like Imposter. This song means to me that Danny's an articulate guy, even when he's screaming about liking little girls. :D
What makes this song so great is that it could be applied to so many parts of the media and society. The first thing that came to mind when I heard the lyrics were the fashion and sex industries, but unfortunately there are countless other examples of young girls being exploited you could use.
Clearly the Elfman and the boys were trying to be a little alarming with this song's lyrics, but, I think it is also easy to see that it could be more about (probably shallow) relationships with younger women, as opposed to minors. Even the line about "Uh oh, the little girl was just too little" could simply mean that she wasn't emotionally ready for the relationship, perhaps. I posted these lyrics here, because everywhere else I've seen them, they had many errors in them. I hope these are accurate!
Perfectly logical explanation to the meaning of this song, but it could also be taken as a paorody of that ghastly 1950's musical GiGi, in which a rather old gentleman sings his appreciation of 'Little Girls', all rather innocent of course but with today's attitude, completely lecherous also.
Can't iamgine Mr Elfman condoning or promoting child abuse in any shape, way or form. He has 2 daughters himself after all.
New theory: This is actually Danny Elfman admitting to his Macro/Micro fetish.
I love this song. It's jsut fun.
Mmmm....I'd be Danny's girl anyday.....
@the_journalist that is MY hubby, back off SLAG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
no, i think he just likes little girls. hot music vid.
Well, when Danny explains why he wrote a song, you're not gonna say thats a bunch of bull shit cause he wrote the song!
However, I also think this song could defend pedophiles. They can't help what they feel. Pedophiles and other sexual minorities are wrongly persecuted all the time. And just cause a pedophile is with a young girl, does not mean she is a victim. There is something you call a teleiophile. Not to mention, pedophile is not synonymous with child molestor. There is a big difference.
oh jesus.

we have age of consent laws for a reason. the fact that an adult has an unfair power advantage over a child is NOT something up for debate.

It is synonymous. A person like that should stay away from children and seek help before they do something that could be detrimental to the mental health of their victim/s. Age of consent laws benefit our society and protect those that aren't mature enough to make rational decisions. I think the age may vary from place to place, 18, 21 etc.. They should be of an age that they are fully mature. These 40 year old guys walking around with college girls are a disgusting problem that is unfortunately still legal.

I've always been an Oingo Boingo fan, but this song has bothered me as I grew older. I hope that Lockstockinsam's explanation of it being a reflection of what Danny saw in Hollywood is correct. Any other rationalizations are a stretch. Of course Danny is now part of Hollywood. I don't know, this is just an alarming song.
Well I am a pedophile (I like....little girls!), and it looks to me like this guy really was a pedo. I guess he figured it seemed catchy and innocent enough not to raise suspicion. Just reading the lyrics without the music just screams it. The repression, the joy, the shame... It just fulfills the urge to scream it at the top of your lungs and let it be known. And this guy had the perfect way of doing it since he had his band.
Referring to another comment, I really don't think that 99% of men are pedophiles. I'm pretty sure it would actually be accepted if that was the case. And no I don't molest little girls. I actually like them.
There are other things I could say, but the thing that matters is, I know what it's like. I've felt it for years. I can tell. This guy likes little girls.
gtfo
I'm sure he was also a hideous monster like in that song "helpless". I know because I'm a monster, too.
@PureObscure Danny Elfman wrote this song to mock his brother. His brother went to pick up girls younger than him. All of the lyrics in this song are completely sarcastic. One of my good friends is a huge Oingo Boingo fan and that's what they told me when I questioned this song.
First off, I don't think Danny is a pedophile, but he sure does know how to get inside the mind of one. Actually, he has a talent for getting inside the minds off all kinds of socially deviant characters, because in his own way, he is one. And because he's a social deviant of a different kind, he can get away with writing a song on a topic most writers would consider taboo. And if the story is true, (I haven't looked into its validity), he can get away with freaking out Girl Scouts.
Songs can have several different intended meanings (as in what the writer had in mind), and even more unintended meanings to listeners. I wonder if the explanation that Danny gave is only one of several messages he had in mind. Speculating that he may have actually written it about pedophiles seems reasonable enough. But then, there are lots of psychological similarities between what goes on in Hollywood that Danny was talking about and men who are actually attracted to underage girls.
Seriously, the video ought to make it clear. Are those girls immature? I don't know. Are they young? Yes. Way too young.
I love Oingo Boingo. That doesn't mean I'm going to pretend their songs weren't about what they were about. Sometimes he sang songs in-character in such a way that it was clear how disgusted he felt with the character. His contempt for the pedophile ("ephebophile" if you're weirdly prone to defending creeps) is as clear as Nabokov's disgust for Humbert Humbert. Trying to pretend he sympathizes with your disgusting inclinations makes you a sycophant.
