Lyrics for All Through The Night as interpreted by Smiley75220

All Through The Night Lyrics
All through the night
I'll be awake and I'll be with you
All through the night
This precious time when time is new
Oh, all through the night today
Knowing that we feel the same without saying

We have no past we won't reach back
Keep with me forward all through the night
And once we start the meter clicks
And it goes running all through the night
Until it ends there is no end

All through the night
stray cat is crying so stray cat sings back
All through the night
They have forgotten what by day they lack
Oh under those white street lamps
There is a little chance they may see

We have no past we won't reach back
Keep with me forward all through the night
And once we start the meter clicks
And it goes running all through the night
Until it ends there is no end

Oh the sleep in your eyes is enough
Let me be there let me stay there awhile

We have no past we won't reach back
Keep with me forward all through the night
And once we start the meter clicks
And it goes running all through the night
Until it ends there is no end
Keep with me forward all through the night
And once we start the meter clicks
And it goes running all through the night
Until it ends there is no end

this song is so true. The night can bring some good times that the day just doesn't produce. It also sounds good. Love it.

All about starting anew. Nice and hopeful. Fun to listen to when you're just starting to fall in love. The running keyboard loop in the background is very 80ish, it's a big part of what makes this song beautiful.

I agree with everyone, especially xxandy. The keyboard loop gives the song an ethreal, almost haunting quality that always brings to mind the first night with someone new, when the sky's the limit, the night's so full of promise, and anything's possible. The song just wouldn't work without it. Lauper's vocals add to it, her almost childlike voice blending with the sensual quality of the music to take the whole to a wonderful new level. Simply superb.

Actually, from research I've learned this sond has a deeper meaning than just falling in love for the first time. This time is an ode to the young urbin punk rocker crowd who were by and large poor and troubled and how they tended to turn to sex to assauge their day to day hardships of the difficult reality they lived in. This song is very 80s pop and a Punk Ballad at the same time.

bestkeptsecret, after reading your post and going back to look at the lyrics again, that makes SO much sense! Especially the "they have forgotten what by day they lack" part. However you slice it though, it'll always be a beautiful song.

On another, sadder note: On the album, The Body Accoustic, she has another version of this song. The good news? It's almost as beautiful as the original, in some spots even better since her voice has matured over the years. This version has a bit of a folksy, Celtic combination, with very effective use of piano and violin. Where she screwed up? Shaggy is on the song. Yes, "Mr. Boombastic", what-the-hell-is-he-saying Shaggy. Now, I like his music, but he just has no place on this song.

I’ve always loved the last line in the chorus “until it ends there is no end” This song has stayed with me over time. A beautiful song-both lyrically and musically.

Agreed. I think it ia about how the night is so good you don't want it to end coz there is so much you can doi that you cannot in the day.Mainly coz people can see you and there are spots open at night that are closed by or uninteresting by day.

Just a fantastic song - probably her best. My only quibble with it is the line is "what by day they lack" but it appears to sound like she is singing "what binding they lack". She clearly pronunciates "by day" in live recording

I personally thought it was about someone sitting with someone else who was dying. "This precious time when time is new" says to me time is short and there is a new dynamic to the relationship because time is running out. Also, take the stray cat crying and one singing back- when someone cries out, another metaphorically sings back to calm them. There is no end until it ends would be what is on my mind while sitting with a friend or loved one in their final moments. It's a wonderful yet fairly painful song- to me... but hardroadz has a pretty cool interp of the song too :)
