When they say promises
They mean promises.
They'd say "that's okay
long as we can celebrate"
You see, my uncle would say
things would change when he's dead...

"Meet me in the bathroom"
That's what she said
I don't mind...it's true.

Never was on time
Yes, I once was mine
Well, that was long ago
And darling, I don't mind.
Yeah, we were just two friends in lust
And baby, that just don't mean much
You trained me not to love
After you showed me what it was

Now she's staring wide-eyed
Can't close her eyes
Anywhere is fine.
just don't waste my time
You see, my uncle would say
things would change once he's dead...

"Meet me in the bathroom"
That's what she said
I don't mind...it's true

Never was on time
Yes, Ionce was mine
Well that was long ago
And darling, I don't mind.
Yeah, they were just two fucks in lust
Baby, that just don't mean much
You trained me not to love
After you taught me what it was.

General Comment:She showed him what love was then she left. He wants no part of love now. He's the one having bathroom romps (ick). He's gone back to his old ways out of anger or sadness or whatever emotion he felt after the woman he loved walked away. She broke her promise to him; she didn't keep it until death. And he feels sorry for himself and resentful (ie "Never was on time" and "And darling, I don't mind.")

General Comment:Am I the only one who thinks this has to do with Julian's father/parents? Promises; like wedding vows. They can celebrate the wedding, get drunk & whatnot. The uncle reference could be a personal thing & not a metaphor.

Then it sorta goes into how Julian treats girls, maybe. They're just fucks & nothing more. His father kind of skewed the whole idea of love for him. The last chorus changes from 'we' to 'they.' 'They' are his parents.

Just a thought. Room On Fire is the best Strokes album hands down.

General Comment:Just want to start off by saying that this is one of my favourite Strokes' songs.

I think it's actually from the guy's point of view.

I think he's talking about how when people say promises, they mean stay true to your relationship and maybe the way he met this girl was because she said, "meet me in the bathroom" and he was figuring that she was saying it to a lot of other people, therefore, not keeping her 'promise'.

I think the uncle line is pretty much a reference to how things don't really change and how it would be great if things changed when he's dead but that he's probably not going to be around to see teenagers change their minds about how sex and an actual relationship RELATE to one another.

He's saying 'never was on time, yes I once was mine. well, that was long ago and darling I don't mind' because he's saying, 'I never wanted a relationship except this one time...but that was a long time ago (as if it wasn't a big deal because it was a long time ago) and then he goes on to try and analyze the failed relationship by saying, 'we were just two friends in lust and baby, that don't mean much.' so that he can recover and try to make himself realize that relationships fail and it happens and since he was just 'in lust' with another girl, he shouldn't make a big deal out of it because she didn't feel the same way.

Obviously the, 'trained me not to love after you showed me what it was' is a reference to a teenager's first heartbreak. He's realizing that this girl doesn't feel the same way and that being heartbroken is not something that someone wants to go through and being a guy, he figures he may as well never fall in love again.

'Now she's staring wide-eyed, can't close her eyes. Anywhere is fine, just don't waste my time' I think it's the guys interpretation of what the girl thinks. He's imagining her hooking up with some other guy the exact same way that she hooked up with him and how she's saying, "Yeah, let's just fuck anywhere because I'm in the mood." and how she's saying 'don't waste my time on trying to pursue a relationship, let's just have some fun.'

The repeated 'Meet me in the bathroom, that's what she said. I don't mind...it's true.' is the guy just thinking about how he was infatuated with her and this is all she wanted: a quick shag in the bathroom and that she had probably done the same thing to other guys too.

The whole song, to sum up this incredibly long analysis, is about some guy who hooked up with a girl at a party, very casually but it meant something to him and how he thought that she felt as deeply about him as he did her and once he found out that she was just into him for the sex and not the relationship, he was heartbroken and the song is pretty much this guy thinking about it over and over in his head just trying to accept the fact that not everyone feels the same way as he does.

General Comment:i think it means that they were in a relationship and they were in love but then it ended for whatever reason but they're still sexually attracted to each other, as meet me in the bathroom. he doesn't want to give the relationship another go because he doesn't want to waste his time but he's okay with sexual endeavors.

My Interpretation:I think the song is about a guy who used to hook up with this girl.

    'Never was on time
    Yes, I once was mine'

At first, he was doing it just for fun. No commitment.

'You trained me not to love
After you showed me what it was'

He admits he fell in love with her.

    'Now she's staring wide-eyed
    Can't close her eyes
    Anywhere is fine.
    just don't waste my time'

But she just wants to have sex with him, she doesn't want him to waste her time with a relationship.

General Comment:...But I also have to say there are females out their (including myself)who seem to be able to seperate the act of sex from their emotions. I had an oppertunity to hook up with a guy friend I find very attractive but because I had strong feelings for him I avoided doing anything with him. Now I regret it, I can't stop thinking about him. Ugh.. I want him so bad but it's probably for the best, but damn I want him!
Okay anyway where was I? So my point is maybe this girl is fine with the bathroom romp. I just feel sad for those girls that are so desperate for love that they subject themselves to getting used and don't even enjoy it. Girls like this are usually so submissive they just lay there not getting off.
They just stare at the ceiling wondering why they let this imbecile inside them. Many moons ago I was that girl.

General Comment:I agree with Penny lane. This girl is probably craving affection and intimacy and that's the only way she knows how to give or recieve it. Or behavior such as this might be her defense mechanism in ensuring she doesn't get emotionally involved. Anyway, great song.

General Comment:does no one else think that "now she's staring wide eyed, can't close her eyes" is the best part of the song? the music there is just beautiful.

General Comment:for me this song is really easy to understand cuz of the final line "yu trained me not to love after yu taught me what love was"
like many song that i can interpretate oh the strokes of relationship. how people just are selfish and just think about their interest.
the uncle thing i think is just a example" my uncle would say things would change once he dead"
like is an example the his uncle cares about his interests before someone life.
same in the beggining "they say thats ok long as we can celebrate" people will do whatever they can to get what they want.
the only line i get confused is "never was on time yes, i once was mine"but i see it as he learned the lesson to just care about himself just respecing his own time.
why i think he learned the lesson?
because someone trained him not to love after she taught him what that was. lol
and that must be hard to learn but once learned.impossible to forget
