Lyrics for Farther Away as interpreted by Happy_Bunny

Farther Away Lyrics
I took their smiles and I made them mine
I sold my soul just to hide the light
And now I see what I really am
A thief, a whore, and a liar

I run to you (far away from this land)
Call out your name (giving up, giving in)
I see you there (still you are)
Farther away

I'm numb to you, numb and deaf and blind
You give me all but the reason why
I reach but I feel only air at night
Not you, not love, just nothing!

I run to you (far away from this land)
Call out your name (giving up, giving in)
I see you there (still you are)
Farther away

Don't leave me here, by myself
I can't breathe!

I run to you (far away from this land)
Call out your name (giving up, giving in)
I see you there (still you are)
Farther away

I run to you (far away from this land)
Call out your name (giving up, giving in)
I see you there (still you are)
Farther away
Farther away
Farther away
Farther away
Farther away
Farther away

This song is so meaningful to me. Its how I felt towards God two years ago when my cousin Chris died from cocaine. I felt that God had abandoned me and that I had no love. I even feel that sometimes when shit happens to me but I know he never turns on me its just life, it sux but hey Im not the only person that has problems. My favorite part of the song is when Amy sings "I reach for you but feel only air at night, NOT YOU, NOT LOVE, JUST NOTHING!" she does it with such emotion.

For me this is about losing someone, either physically through death or relationship wise, by breaking up with them or whatever. You want them back so bad and youre thrown into this darkness without them. "I see you there, farther away" you still see them but they're not with you. In m opinion (which you can either take it or leave it) the best line is "I reach but i feel only air at night, not you, not love, just nothing"
About what oyu lose when you lose someone. What you feel, the dark.

Losing someone, whenever it be physical or just emotional and mentaly. The person 'being there' in a sense, but yet getting farther and farhter away each day. But you are 'dying' since you need them.

yeah evanescence kicks so much ass live.

i think another part of 'farther away' with such emotion is 'a theif a whore aliar'.

i think this is like an after-effect of losing someone physically. just so much grief.all of it. 'i took their smiles and made them mine.i sold my soul just to hide the light' it's all anger about who they've become after losing someone.

It almost seems like the person she loves keeps going farther away even when she runs to the person....& feels like she's farther away from herself...who she really is. That's just what I think & feel when I listen to this song...I love it, one of my favorites right now.

I do think that this song is definetly about someone she loves, but I don't think that it's about someone who has passed. The second verse is too sinister. "I'm numb to you, numb and deaf and blind, you give me all but the reason why."

On Anywhere But Home, in the song t goes like:
Try to forget you, but without you I feel nothing
Don't leave me here, by myself, I can't breath

Just thought I'd mention that since up at the top they don't seem to have the "Try to forget you, but without you I feel nothing" in there... just the line after that...
Odd little people...

i love this song, it has to be my fave besides breathe no more...just gotta make a correction, it's not "run away from this land" its "run away from this hell." ya..btw great site....to all evanescence fans YOU ROCK...i love amy's voice it is so amazing...my favortie thing to do when i need to unwind is turn up one of her songs and jsut blast it...and not only is her voice amazing but the band is great too....oh and to me this song is about someone who loves someone but cant have them..perhaps she/he is dead or perhaps just doesnt return the love...either way the narrarator of this song feels cheap and sleazy "a theif, a whore and a liar" ya so thats my take..may not be rite but oh well
peace!

To me this song is about someone who wants to be rich and famous and powerful, but she does some pretty bad things to get to that spot, eg. I took their smiles and I made them mine
I sold my soul just to hide the light
And now I see what I really am
A thief, a whore, and a liar

I think that she realizes that she is turning unice (is that a word?) and superficial and notices her loved one/s drifting away because thats where she pushed them. Thats just what it meant to me. Evanescence kicks ass!

I think this song means that someone is trying to be something that there not.

'I took their smiles and I made them mine
I sold my soul just to hide the light
And now I see what I really am
A thief, a whore, and a liar'

The person that there in love with is in love with the person that there pretending to be (little bit confusing). So the person that's pretending to be someone that there not, knows that they can't get close to the person that they love.

'I run to you (far away from this land)
Call out your name (giving up, giving in)
I see you there (still you are)
Farther away'

The person that's pretending to be someone that there not, feels like she's growing apart from the person that she loves.

I'm sorry if this is a bit confusing to understand and i know that the meaning of the song could be completely different but this is what i think the song means.

Okay...I love this song....I have listened to it at least 200 times...I think it's about the singer being in love with someone, but she did something to make him hate her, and now she hates herself. So she tries to get him to forgive her, but everytime she tries to get close enough to apologise, he seems farther away, and she feels like she can't breathe without him, but he still keeps getting farther away.

To me, this song is about a strange relationship. One of the ones where you do stuff or whatever. But never actually act like a couple, both acting like you want it that way when really only one does - the other would give anyhting to feel safe and loved by the other person, but can never voice that longing for fear of losing what they have.

In the bridge you left out "Tried to forget you but without you I feel nothing"
I think dead_snow_white's explanation was interesting. It defenitely has something to do with a relationship.
I think it's about having already gotten out of a relationship, but still loving the person, but they no longer love you back.

This is kind of in relation to dead_snow_white's explanation, but a little different. This song makes me think about a person [Person A] who wants to be/is trying to be in a relationship with another person [Person B]. Person A and Person B are together, or trying to make it work, but Person A, for whatever reason, (probably something to do with their social life - "a thief, a whore, and a liar") is emotionally unavailable. Say they've been hurt before and are untrusting. Person B is an emotionally healthy being who is trying to cope with Person A, but Person A keeps getting worse, and ends up forcing Person B to withdraw. Person A is struggling to keep Person B and willing themselves to show Person B that they love them, but it's not working. Thus, Person B is getting "farther away" from them everytime Person A is cold and unresponsive, or "numb to you, numb and deaf and blind". Is this making any sense? So, in a nutshell, Person A is trying to fix what they've done to themselves/has been done to them emotionally and trying to be in a loving relationship with Person B, but it's not working. Person A is in a different world than Person B, and is trying to make the jump.

AliceUpbringing: The lyrics you mentioned are part of the live version, the revised version. When this was posted, the original version of the song was still the only one in circulation. So the lyrics are correct, it's simply two different versions of the song.

Is it just me, or do the drums in the beginning of the song sound a lot like the drums in Disturbed's "Down With the Sickness"?
