I used to think it black while at my country seat
Now I'm peaking in so many ways
The gloom is in retreat
Yes the dark epoch is over I've found my efeblum
Then passed Ernst's mausoleum defended by a rook
Who shot a look so virulent it pierced me like a hook
The palaver of Solipsists exploding in my skull

Yeah and we both despise all of the academic swine
Who made the author of "Discus Ulysses" benign

So what if Wednesday finds us
Wearing rabies parachutes
Foaming like the melodies of sea foam fairy flutes
The atmosphere is viscous we're sticking to the brine

Yeah and we both despise all of the academic swine
Who made the author of "Discus Ulysses" benign

When the lanterns fill with finches
So begins the brawl
'Cause their brains are like porcupines
And mine's a paper ball
I know they don't understand they don't get us at all
Their moss mangles polyanthus
And mine's a paper ball

General Comment:Irony was more of the point of the title in my opinion as it goes against the vegan lifestyle to wear fur. and as for the VU song it was based off the book "venus in furs" I digress. This song Is brilliant

General Comment:My friends jokingly dedicated this song to me because I'm a vegan, but a poorpoorpoor (& cheap!) vegan so I still wear my four year old Ugg boots in the cold, lol. I make fun of myself for being a 'vegan in furs' pretty often, too.
Anyway, I can't figure out the meaning of it at all BUT the line "Foaming like the melodies of sea foam fairy flutes?" makes me so happy because the mental imagery is so pretty ^__^
The entire song seems really silly and I like it lots. Do I understand a word of it? Nope, but it puts me in a good mood and that's good enough for me.

General Comment:Yeah, it's definitely about pseudo-intellectuals, also written from the point of view of one of them.
As for the title, apart from being a pun on "Venus in Furs", I believe it's a metaphor for pretentiousness, which would fit perfectly considering the topic of this song.
What I find ironic is that the narrator in this song rants about such people, not realizing they are one of those people themselves.

I actually know a guy who behaves exactly like the character in this song.

General Comment:There is no, "because" before, "Their brains are like porcupines"

AND, this song is so great, upbeat, and like... happy, especially toward the end. It makes me want to dance. A lot.
MY happy meter before listening to this song~

General Comment:after reading all the comments, aren't we all a little guilty of doing that at some points in our life. can't help but think that when some people's views, whatever in particular, are really distorted.

i don't think being a deep person is a negative in any way, it's when you think you're smarter and automatically meaning you're also very deep. that's just me, i give everyone a chance until they prove they really are retarded is all.

i'm not gonna pretend i understand/know all the references in the lyrics, i only learned about solipsists because of this page.

i agree with most of what dfitzd posted.

General Comment:you guys are all right so far. and yeah, this song is not about being "deeper" than other people and critiques people for shallowly considering themselves to be better than others because of their ability to use intellectual bullshit. the sarcasm that kevin has for these people is much like the sarcasm yrtlzmo got for correcting other people's interpretations so proudly.

palaver is idle or misleading talk, and solipsists only believe in themselves. this kind of behavior, the over-intellectualized element of the university and academic world, drives kevin crazy and is even worse than a pretentiously titled book about one of the more pretentious books that most pretentious people love to talk about - james joyce's Ulysses.
the part about ernst and his mausoleum and his rook is confusing. i thought he might mean max ernst, the surrealist, who had an alter-ego he often drew in his art called loplop, but i don't know if it looked at all like a rook

General Comment:I love how Satanic Panic ends with this song, and Sunlandic Twins starts with Art Snob Solutions. They go together so perfectly.

Although this isn't as obviously crammed full of intellectual references, I believe there are still a few. For example, Solipsism is the belief that only one's own self exists. (that's all I could identify, but then I'm not exactly overtly educated, nor will I pretend to be.)
