Well, as has been noted, the title of the song is a line from "Dirty Dancing". It's not too much of a stretch, but what the song describes to me is the whole relationship between the two main characters in that. Basically, the main characters are a rich girl and a guy who barely makes a living as a dancer, and the girl ends up losing all the respect from her father by befriending and helping this guy and his friends; the "burning bridges" part. Eventually, being with him gets him fired, which seems like she chokes him by trying to be with him. He also was a prostitute on the side before he met her, for the rich ladies that came to the resort on vacation. Making him "easy as they come". She wants to lie in his bed all day, but neither of them can allow that. She is his best kept secret and biggest mistake; no one knows about their relationship until she tells, and it costs him. The girl feels like she's always trying to help and always failing, so reliving a failure every day... the only thing is they have a happy ending aaapparently.

Maybe he's fed up of not being what she really want's (as the song seems to suggest shes with someone else aswell or at least doesnt really love him) an decides that he cant bear to not be the only one in her life so kills her.

i relate this song to my summer romance and imagine singing this song to her. i think this song is about pete or a character he's imagining, and how his life is with a girlfriend he's known for a while. like how they dated at the start "spitting off bridge(s)" and drinkin cheap booze. but now they've gone on he thinks he is weighing her down hence the "locket", he is "jealous" of her now that she is successful maybe? and now he realises he is not good enough for her, "i'll be your best kept secret and your biggest mistake". the fast beat to the song stood this song out at the start of the album for me but it is now just behind "dark alley". i also think the acoustic version is better, a lot more soul into it. i haven't read the other posts on this so my meaning could be way off the original intention but hell it might be close. I love the way it harmonises into the chorus and the 'so wear me like a locket around your throat.' It's trully a fucking GRRREAT song.

i always thought:

Was a reference to drowning (for choking, and face turning blue) like, if your ganna make this bad for me and just show me off (locket), then i guess ill make this hell for you too.

This song is my fav fall out boy.
Its pure amazing.
It has so much meaning to it.
I basically think that its about a boy who loves a girl, but they are friends, and the girl has a boyfriend, but they end up spending a night together and he knows that this girl would be so much better off with him, but he doesnt ever want to hurt her, and its so painful for him because he is jealous of this other man but he has to be happy for this girl because he loves her so much he wants her to be happy even if thats tearing him apart inside.

What I think this song means:

-Taking the phrase "burning bridges" into mind here, and the idea that people like to drink away their problems, I'm thinking this verse is about drinking away the guilt and wishing to cut ties (but not doing so) just to feel better about the situation.

-I'm guessing that the person speaking here is in love with someone who is already in a relationship (which probably has alot of issues), and having an affair with the speaker. However at the end of the day, she goes back to her boyfriend/whatever leaving him alone. While he has the affair, her man still has almost all of her, thus making him jealous. This possibly also explains the line "light a match to leave me be" because when you think about staying warm, a match is only a very small peice of warmth compared to the warmth of another person. And where he says "And I keep my jealousy close cause it's all mine" could also refer to this as in he clings to his jealousy towards what she and her man have because he doesn't have to share that like he shares her.

-I think this is the most obvious verse of the song. Kinda states their affair, and how she feels she has to keep him a secret and the guilt she feels about their relationship. "The hand behind this pen relieves a failure every day" could mean that she seeks out his attention to make her feel like less of a failure in life because other elements are bringing her down. Thus having an affair makes her feel wanted and worthy.

-Ultimately she is the kind that carries her guilt everywhere she goes, and it wears on her. "You look so good in blue" is probably refering to her mood/sadness/depression wraught by the negative feelings she has towards herself.


I could also see this song working on the flip side.
Where in he was in a relationship with this woman, and she cheated on him (because she doesn't have the greatest self esteem). She kept him a secret, or called being with him a mistake, and at the begining of the song they're eliminating their ties (i.e. saying it's over) and he hopes that she'll carry the guilt of her disloyalty with her.

These lyrics are absolute creative genius in my opinion. This is basically about a girl who has a relationship with one guy. The person writing this song is dating her as well, because he loves her so much, and she’s so easy to persuade. He gets upset, because she isn’t giving him the adequate attention that he requires, and basically vows revenge. Here’s my take on the song:

I love this song. The lyrics have such an angst-y flavor. The actual song is so nice, and upbeat. It’s amazing, that almost every band I like has a weird song like this, which talks about love in such an unusual way. It makes you think they can’t, or couldn’t get dates, so they would resort to the lowest means. The kind of love where you love someone, but want to see them hurt. It’s something that most people would feel more towards an ex. I have felt an opposite feeling, where I just wanted my crush to hurt me, so I would stop loving him. I love the lyrics. The song is such an easy listen, and I love how it changes tempo a lot. Patrick’s voice…yummy =]]. I think the title ties in nicely. Besides it being a quote from…”Dirty Dancing” [?] I think, it does relate to the song, or at least to me. People don’t keep babies in corners alone, because they need attention. People love babies. Nobody would put a baby in a corner, and leave them there alone. “Nobody Puts Baby in a Corner”. Then you look a little closer to the song, and realize that it means ”nobody doesn’t give me attention (evil laugh…sorry:/)”. Fall Out Boy has the most interesting lyrics, and I love to look at them, and solve them. If you originally hear the song, it just sounds normal. Then look up the lyrics, and you can hear dark undertones, and pleads for help. Okay, I’m over exaggerating, but I love this band. They do take a while to completely understand, and the lyrics always put the pieces into the puzzle. I always used to consider them a pop/rock/emo band, until I finally grasped them (just recently). Now, there’s no going back.

Hes not really saying she looks good in the color blue, he means that since hes choking her, shes turning blue and he likes the fact that shes suffocating.

I think by that line he litterally means then pen in his hand. I used to think that he said "The hand behind this pen *relieves* a failure everyday" but he doesnt.

This IS the best ever Fall Out Boy song. Both rock and acoustic versons are fantastic! Pete's awesome lyrics and Stumpy singin it in true unqiue style just mke it an unbeatable combo!
For me this song is about a guy and a girl who had feelings for each other and knew they couldve had something great but for some reason she went off with another guy.

this song is about obsession. Someone who thought they had a significant other in the bag so to speak, but never did, because she's with another. Thats why he speaks of jealousy. And he says you look so good in blue, to me, is either referring to wanting to strangle the person you love to not be with someone else so u can always have them, or actually doing it.
