well first off i wanted to kno the story behind this song...but meanwhile i'll draw some conclusions of my own. Its deep, and possibly describes a relationship i am in right now. Mixed messages and conflicting feelings are familiar to most of us, and the song is laced with them.
Here is my take on the whole burning bridges part: Burning bridges is like burning down relationships and isolating one's self, and drinking gin and kerosene and spitting it out on a brindge not only helps to burn down the bridge (their relationship) but it shows that they both are self-destructive. In other words, they hurt themselves and eachother.

One website actually had varying lyrics (an extra verse), but i cant find it. . .something about a scar on her chest from the way someone used to love her but now they dont or something. . .anyways i'm starting to feel that the song looses some meaning thru over-interpretation. the beauty is in the unknown

I think they might be talking about destructive behavior that keeps them together. By doing it together they feel a connection.

I think they're saying if you're going to start something then leave it alone and don't try and mess with it or tame it, like a fire. &I also think when they're talking about the jealousy and how it's all mine then they're talking about how he's going to keep his jelousy close to him because, unlike the girl that he loves, it's all his and he doesn't have to share it. &then that feeds into the next line about not being happy, and I think it's saying that if she says sneaking around is making her happy then she's lying about it and he knows it.

When they say nothing comes as easy as you I think they're talking about loving this person and not having to work at it...the next three lines are again about cheating and her having a boyfriend or another guy and then about how he can't tell her how he really feels about her and that's why he's a failure.


This probably isn't even close to right and it's just me ranting about something I have no clue about. I had a relationship like this, if you could even call it that. Full of secrecy and lies. However, the person i was "involved" with wasn't cheating, we just kept it secret in fear of what other people would say. I never really told them how I felt so I look upon myself as a failure sometimes and think about what could've, would've, should've been.

One more thing...when it says

I think it's taling about how he weighing her down and he doesn't care. &as she chokes he watches her as she turns blue (or a shade close to blue, as you do when you choke) and is thinking that either she looks good because she's always beautiful to him and nothing could change that, or because she's dying (by choking) and he knows he's the one who killed her...I'd go with the first one tho

I think this song is basically about this boy who loves a girl, as most people have figured out. And he finds out that she's been whoring herself to all these boys, and he's jealous to a point where it becomes anger. The third set of lyrics starting with "keep quiet" is this man reflecting on what's been happening lately, and expressing that he's done dealing with it.

Well, that's the way I interpret this song.. To each there own.

Fall Out Boy is one of the best bands ever, and this song is the BEST EVER WRITTEN IN THE WORLD...
what *I* get from it is that this couple aren't really supposed to be together in the eyes of soceity, like maybe he's a bit of a fuck-up and she's the good girl type, but they truly, truly love each other, and would do anything to be together, soceity be damned...
like the line, 'and if you say this makes you happy then I'm not the only one lying'

the girl is going out with someone else, but is cheating on him, "just for fun" with the singer, and he wants her completely

Right. Well i think this song is about two people that obviously had something going on, but now shes with someone else. It sounds like she treated him badly, and you can sense some bitterness there. But still after treating him badly, he still wants to be with her because he likes her so much, but knows it can't happen. (A place i hate to say i've been, as im sure have many others...)

(Which is backed up here. The more he writes lyrics, the more his 'apparant' failures are shown and the worse he feels about himself. Sounds like shes making him feel this way too...)

I think the name could refer to him being discarded and 'put in the corner' and not really noticed like 'Baby' in Dirty Dancing, and he's bitter that she's done it to him.

I think personally that the girl that the song was being wrote about had another love, and was cheating on him/her with the writer. The writer knew and didn't care, "Lay in bed" and "secret" and whatnot. And the locket was a reminder of him and of her guilt, which was weighing her down and choking her "You look good in blue" or somem like that. First entry I've done so yeah. Later. ~---Slain---~

pete seems so genuine in all his songs-- amazing. jealousy and unrequited love seem to be the theme in a lot of his songs, thats why so many can relate. he is prolly one of the most clever songwriters ive ever seen.

Okay, I’m gonna take a shot at this song, cause I personally know exactly what this song is about, because it’s exactly what I’m going through. Here’s what happened to me. Basically, my girlfriend of 13 months left me for my best friend. Anyway, here’s what you all are missing…

Okay, gin + kerosene + matches = fire. Easy enough. Just to clarify, this is all figurative. Okay, so the two people spit some gin and kerosene on the bridge. Then they light a match. The match burns the bridge down. This is all figurative. The burning of the bridge represents the connection between these two people being destroyed. That’s why it says “leave me be.” He wants that connection between the two of them to go away because she hurt him.

Here, he’s talking about keeping his jealousy to himself. “It’s all his” because beforehand, his friend, who is with his girlfriend now, was jealous of him for being with her in the first place (remember, I’m relating this to my own situation). Wow.. that next line is powerful. Right now, I tell my old girl that I’m happy if she’s happy, even though I’m not. I don’t honestly think that she is as happy with her new guy as she was with me, so then if she says she’s happy, then she’s not the only one lying.

I’m not too sure of what those first two lines really mean, so I’m not gonna try to bs my way through them. The can I lay in your bed all day line is just what it says, he wants to go back to the old times when he could just lay in her bed. By saying that he will bet her best kept secret and her biggest mistake, he is saying that she can still be with him. This is what happened with my girlfriend and I shortly after we “broke up.” She was officially with my best friend, but secretly, she and I still did stuff together like a couple would. So anyway, it has the be the best kept secret because otherwise she would have nothing. The biggest mistake part applies if the secret were to get out. Okay, here’s the line everyone is getting stuck on. Nobody has gotten this one right yet. Here’s what it is. The fact that the hand is holding the pen has nothing to do with writing songs. Take out “behind this pen” and you are left with “the hand relieves a failure every day.” What kind of thing do most guys “relieve” every day with their hand? It’s a failure because their relationship failed, so now he has to do it himself.

Okay, here’s the best part. This section is completely and entirely figurative. Wear me like a locket around your throat means never forget about me. I’ll weigh you down means that the girl is always going to be thinking about that guy and it keeps her back from everything. Again, choking is a continuation on the locket around the throat. When the girl is blue, it is because of her choking, and when someone chokes, they turn blue because of a lack of oxygen or whatever. Basically here, the guy is saying that he is enjoying watching the girl die because she thinks about him all of the time.

This is what this song means to me. It all applies perfectly to my life at this point. It is so clear to me that this is what it means. But this is probably only because of how much this stuff with this girl has screwed me up and it’s all I think about any more. So here’s some advice to all of you nice people out there. No matter how well you think you know your best friends, you don’t. You don’t know what they can do to you if they want something badly enough and you’re in the way.

oook, i got sick of reading all of these so im not sure if this was mentioned before but...Drink down that gin and kerosene(which are both quite flamable if im not mistaken) light a match and leave me be...and then the part of choking the girl and saying she looks good that way...he obviously wants to kill her. He found out she was cheating on him, all he wants to do is be with her but he knows he cant anymore. Perhaps he is comming up with this plan to make her think everything is alright and then he is gonna take care of the problem. This is quite a literal interpretation.
