My friend,
You're always the last one to leave
Those dimly lit rooms.
Making sure the last glass makes its way to the table empty.
And every bottle in the place
Has been upside down
At least a few times what a waste.
Is this what's left of you these days?
You're not eighteen anymore.
Five years should have been,
Enough time for you to grow up and get over this.
Not too cool to be throwing up all morning sick
From what you might have done or done it with.
And I swear if I could take your pain
And frame it and hang it on my wall,
Maybe you would never have to hurt it all.
Painting pictures in red and blue.
A portrait bruise just like you
And now you're walking away.
You're not eighteen anymore.
Five years should have been,
Enough time for you to grow up and get over this.
Not too cool to be throwing up all morning sick from what you might of done.
When is enough, finally enough?
The hang-ups and the heartbreaks get you past.
Our failures lay down but just accept yourself.
Find some thing that brings you closer to complete.
Painting pictures in red and blue.
A portrait bruise just like you and now you're walking away.
You're not eighteen anymore.
Five years should have been,
Enough time for you to grow up and get over this.

it is actually
when is enough, finally enough?
when the hang ups and the heartbreaks get you past
all failures and bad breaks
just accept yourself and find something
that brings you closer to complete
also its
a portrait BRUISED just like you
just thought i would say, because it makes the song sound all wrong
live ever since a really good friend e$me
introduced there music to me
they kick ass! lol
the title seems somewhat sarcastic to me, like saying to the person it's about, "look at you, you and your life turned out to be such a masterpiece" even though the song is being interpreted as a song about alcohol abuse or something of the sort.
"painting pictures in red and blue / a portrait bruise just like you" -- i always thought of the red and blue thing as a description for the bruising in the next line, since red and blue make purple when you mix them together and some bruises are purple. could be way off, but who knows.
i really just see this song as telling someone to grow up and stop living in the past. whatever happened there should've been left there, not dwelled on for as long as it was. could also be about a person who keeps running away from his problems ("and now you're walking away / you're not eighteen anymore") and uses alcohol as their way to cope and ignore them.
This song is beautiful; I love the second verse, though I'm not sure what it all means. The line "And I'm painting pictures in red and blue" is gorgeous and haunting... and what mieolhc said about blood and depression makes sense, but I think it means something else as well. Not sure what, though, haha. I could listen to this song on loop for hours. And it's so amazing to sing because the lyrics have feeling built into them.
maybe you would never have to hurt at all.
i'm painting pictures in red and blue.
a portrait bruise just like you and now youre walking away.
That part of the song alone is powerful. It reminds me of so many different people in my life. This whole song .. definently ranks up there in the top 10 of Bayside's greatest if it's not at #1
