With a small amount of pride, I bring this discussion into it's 4th year of flaming quiffporn for expressing his opinion- those who are doing so are just as bad for expressing his opinion. If you're not able to accept somebodies opinion is going to be different to yours, then perhaps you shouldn't be on songmeanings.net.

I always hear a lot of the same stuff I am hearing about HIM that I see on some of these comments. I think HIM is talented in their own ways. Ville can definatly write good meaningful songs but the band itself...is nothing amazing like Led Zeppelin or anything...nor is their stage performance. But I do like this band alot because their songs are catchy to me. ANd I do think Ville Valo is attractive...but aren't most singers in bands good looking???

This is pretty relevant to what is happening to me just now I think and that is I have a crush, that I need to move forward. Valo's probably been through every love scenario imaginable so its not hard to believe.

I don't want to face the "burden of losing" at all, but is the courage within me to ask her out? Time will tell but I'm hoping yes. I'm hiding secrets from her (and I guess vice-versa) that we can only share if we join. "But within me hid a secret so terrible" and I can't share stuff like "Your tomb is where your heart is, I should have told her" or "Your home is where the dark is" if I don't move on.

I admittedly cried at the end of my last relationship but my "river of tears" is indeed gone as I'm now past the heartache. I don't want to fool her, living around her for years and just staying her friend, I need her to know how I feel and see if she reciporcates. I'll be buried alive by love if I don't act on my heart soon.

I should have told her Embrace the fire indestructible" if we just act on our mutual attraction (I can pretty much tell its there given several things) then it can spark into blazing, strong love. Also, "where the dark is" I view her as an angel but I'm sure when the lights go out she's a bit more evil :D

The next pre-chorus stuff is similar to the previous one but of course, "I never wanted to lose you, no" I can't deal with the thought of my outreach to her ruining what we have just now, so I pray that it won't. Later, "A deserted soul is gone" is basically the same thing I think.

The solo reflects my adoration of her, my apprehensions, my hope, and if I do indeed become one with her soul, my eternal bliss. It kicks ASS.

But the most important line I think is "Rescue me with your smile" as, whether I leave things the way they are, ask her, get a yes or a no, or something else happens, she will always be able to give me her beautiful smile and my lips curl up automatically while my eyes crinkle reflexively in a return smile. And that will save me from whatever armageddon of feeling I am experiencing.

so here is what I think this song means:

"Again the burden of losing rests upon my shoulders

Lets break down this first half of this verse, i do agree with marcus's thoughts on how a man is deeply in love with a woman.

In theory i believe that maybe he's tried to win her heart but she doesnt see or she rejects him everytime. And he doesn't know how much more he can take of this rejection.

Or also it could mean he's secretly in love with someone like a best friend or something and he has kept it a secret for so long and its eating away at him. and he doens't know how much longer he can keep it a secret.

"To cry is to know that you're alive

I never wanted to fool you, no
But a cold heart is a dead heart
And it feels like I've been buried alive by love"

In this stanza, I think the person he cares for deeply may have known his secret and they tried confronting him about it but he just lies and says he doesnt love them. And he's mean or gives them the cold shoulder, and in the end he feels like he's buried his heart within himself because he doesnt feel worthy of their love after so long of denying him his satisfaction.

This is quite obvious, he may be contemplating suicide or he feels he's dying inside, he's trying to get over this person but no woman.. or man depending the point of view if it a man or a woman, or if they are gay or not. no one else can take that person's place and he feels that the only one who can save him from his internal hell is that man or woman.

I think this song is about feeling the pain of unrequited love. The person doesn't tell the other person that they have feelings for them...thus makes them reach their breaking point. They're asking the person they're in love with to save them by acknowleding their existence and giving them courage to let the said person know of their feelings.
