A Distorted Reality Is Now a Necessity t... Lyrics
I’m floating in a black balloon
I must make it through this afternoon
Shame-shifting shadow
Downdrifting way out of town

And all you ladies and you gentleman
Unhappy where you could have been
That drive people like you drive a car
Until you don't know where you are

You don't impress me
I'm sorry that you're chained to the ground
But no big brother is going to bring me down now

Wind's blowing now with all its might
Raindrops falling through a starry night
Sunrise on a choppy blue sea
Waving back at you
Not me

You don't impress me
You can't be satisfied anyhow
But no big brother is going to bring me back down

This is such a great song...In fact, most, if not all of Elliott's songs are great.

I thought it was

"WIND'S BLOWING now with all it's might
raindrops falling through a starry night
sunrise on a choppy BLUE SEA
waving back at you, not me"

From Elliott himself regarding this song during his last interview:
"This one is my girlfriend's favorite. There's also a rough demo of this that sounds a lot different."

i can't choose which version of the song i like more.
but the record sounds so great, his voice just mixes with the music so well on it, and all the little crackles in the record make it seem like he's sitting there in my room with me, singing.
xo.

"i’m floating in a black balloon"

heroin is usually in the form of black tar. the dealers put it in little balloons. black balloon=heroin.

I wonder if the big brother that elliott mentions is a reference to big brother from george orwell's book 1984?

To Laura325, I'm almost positive that he's making a reference to 1984.

In the book, "Big Brother" is really just the government, or the conforming of the people to the government.

In other words, he is feeling that he has always been chained, so to speak, by conformity. He now finds a way to break away from it and is directly stating that it can't hold him back any longer.

I watched a home-made video on youtube with this version of the song, and it's animation similar to south park I suppose? anyway, there's a man with a black balloon for a head, and he's just standing standing standing on the same street corner, watching time pass at an incredible rate, watching people interests change from one thing to another, and then his big balloon starts to fly away.. but then the cops come and they grab the string ang pull him back down to the ground. but that doesn't stop him from doing the exact szame tihng over again, with gusto. And, of course, this time he gets higher. So they send a fire truck, and they get on the ladder, and they 'bop' his head back down, and tie it to his neck../ So, dih, it happens again. But you've used up all your resources and I'm so high, and i don't care about you and yours, in the clouds, My black ballon shines through, and you can't bring me down forever, it's not where I'm used to. and even if you do, and I cry for a while, my tears are going to dry up, and I'll be looking for the sky..

I love the way he sings 'You don't impress me/I'm sorry that you're chained to the ground'. There's something very contemptuous about it (in a good way). It's sort of defiant. Most of his songs are kind of about accepting the people and the things you don't like, but this is sort of..hitting back at it. I love this, it's so different from most of his other stuff.

I can never choose which version I like better.
I love the third verse in this version (wind's blowing...),
but I really miss the double-toned chorus on the word "fuck" from the other one.
