Lyrics for Somewhere Only We Know as interpreted by butterflykiss84

Somewhere Only We Know Lyrics
I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete

Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

I came across a fallen tree
I felt the branches of it looking at me
Is this the place we used to love?
Is this the place that I've been dreaming of?

Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

And if you have a minute why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
Somewhere only we know?

Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

So if you have a minute why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
So why don't we go

This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
Somewhere only we know?

Brilliant Song. Reminds me of that special place a couple has, that place he needs to go to sort his relationship though.

this is a great song! i wonder why nobody posts... anyway, for me this song is about loneliness. it's like they've broken up for a long time already. but, he's at the point in his life where he doesn't know where to go, what to do. so, he turns to this girl, his ex, and still thinks they have a chance. it's pretty suttle though.

i think hes been in love with this girl. i think, theyve been having a platonic relationship, or the girl just doesnt want to commit.

so, this song is like, "heyyy, cmon lets go. lets move on to another level."
cos hes 'getting old' and 'tired'.

and now, he feels like hes losing this girl.
'this could be the end of everything' and 'simple thing where have you gone?'

i guess, he wants everything back to normal and more. haha, this is my guess. =)

i reckon its about that place where every couple has where they can sit down and talk things thourgh, it seems the relationship is breaking down and they need to go "somewhere only we know" as "this could be the end of everything" that they have!

there is a lot of solitary imagery in it eg 'i walked across this empty land' which seems like he's alone in the relationship, or they have broken up. Then with the bit about the branches looking at him, it seems as if the 'un certainty' of where it went wron is making him almost..mad/crazy.
The only way to move on is to go 'somewhere only we know' as if that palce where he shared memories of the girl, can show her what they had. May not even be a literal place..but mroe a state of mind...i dont know.

this song reminds me about my at-one-time best friend, who was in fact a boy. he was two years older then me and we were next door neighbors. for about two years we were practically inseparable. i moved (although i was in the same town) when i was in 8th grade and he was a sophomore. what might have started out as a plutonic friendship was now taking on the shape of something that might have been more then just mere friendship. there was a woodsy area behind my old house (equipped with a little creek and a fallen tree) that was basically "our" place. eventually, we lost touch, and i found out some time later he's moved to a different state. thing song reminds me of him because he's pretty much the last best friend and only tie to my childhood i have left. i would really like to rekindle the friendship we once had, but i think it's too late for that...

desaparecida it's not too laaaate dont worry it happened to me and actually you'll find that even if the guy doesn't think he thinks the same, in his heart he knows that something as precious as childhood needs to be remembered and lived as it once was....which this song reminds me of anyway too

this song leaves a deep impression on those that take the time to really hear the song. I heard just the once and never again for a while, I had to chase it up, its just one of those songs...I just love the lyric
"Oh simple thing, where have you gone.." beautiful

This song is about a guy trying to get a commitment from his girlfriend. hence the verse "I'm getting old and need something to rely on." I think the "fallen tree" represents him, he's looking at himself. He wants to go to the place he first made love to her and try and get those memories and feelings back, although, he almost knows that it "could be the end of everything," but he's hoping that special place will remind her of the love they shared and "let him in" her heart.

This is the first Keane song I heard, and I knew that they were a bit different. I love all of the natural imagery - it builds such a vivid picture. The video goes perfectly as well (except for the random alien things O_o)

I think that the speaker is in a relationship where he is completely in love with his partner, but not satisfied with the relationship. He's alone as someone mentioned, so obviously the other person isn't committed enough or just isn't around enough. He can feel them slipping away and this is his last plea to try and work things out and really talk because he doesn't know what else to do, but he would do anything to save the relationship.

I can relate to it painfully well.

I agree silverdew - "I think that the speaker is in a relationship where he is completely in love with his partner, but not satisfied with the relationship." with that exactly.
Evident in the line..
"This could be the end of everything"
Perhaps after a rekindling of the relationship, wanting to go back to it's roots and where it all began. Touching song.

The part when he says is this the place we used to love makes me think that he's reminising. That place he's talking about could be the place him and this other person had so many good times.

I think that he is trying to save his relationship and is saying lets go to a place where they both know. he wants to move onto the next level of his relationship, or break it, so he is trying to figure it all out.

I dunno it sounds for some reason like this guy is a nice guy. you know a guy that girls complain to about thier guy troubles. he likes the girl but she just uses him as an earpiece to complain about other guys and all he wants to do it talk about it because he thinks it will make her like him

the chorus seems to speak bout the loss of innocence. As someone mentioned before "childhood" was when things were simple. Now he is older with a broken heart he searches for something he can count on.

The "why don't we go" seems to be pretty much analyzed to death so I'll just leave it at that.

Desaparecida, your story is so touching! I almost cried when i read your comment *though i really don't know why exactly*.
Anyway that is sorta irrelevant, to me this song is about being lost and alone, in a metaphorical sence, and knowing that your life has changed without consulting you first. I really relate to this song, its bueatiful. I love the piano in all of their songs. Lovely.

There's something odd about the way the singer addresses his lover as "simple thing," if in fact the song is addressed to his lover.

Another interesting thing is the possible double meaning of "Is this the place we used to love?" This could mean either "Is this the place where we used to love each other (i.e. make love)?" or it could mean "Is this the place that we used to love?"

You're probably all right about the meaning of this song, cause there are just many ways to interprete it.

To me though, it's about a guy who kissed a lot of girls, but somehow none of them ever turned out to be his girlfriend. For a long time he didn't really care, he knew how to get them and just moved on te the next one. It made him 'feel complete', hence the first part of the song.
But now, as the second chorus says, when he's there ready to kiss another girl, he just doesn;t see the point anymore if it's just gonna be a one-time-thing. (Is this the place that i've been dreaming of?) That makes sence to the 'oh simple thing, where have you gone? I'm getting old and i need something to rely on' part. He's ready for a girlfriend, but doesn't know how to get one (so tell me when you're gonna let me in, i'm getting tired and in need somewhere to begin).
The 'you' person in theis song is love. He's asking love to 'talk about somewhere only we know', when will his time be?

anyway, that's just how i listen to the song.. i'm pretty curious to know how it was meant

I love this song its about what I'm going through with my ex. we dated for over 2 years and broke up a few months ago and since then i felt alone like i walked across an empty land. He is pretty much saying to her look I miss you I am empty without you why dont we go to that place in eachothers hearts that only we know. So yeah I sang this to my ex we are slowly getting back together now

I LOVE this song it is the most beautiful thing I have every time I hear it I about cry . only people like Jason Mraz can really do that . This song totally shows what I am going through. You and that special someone have that place and things are falling apart between you and that place reminds you of the good time or when you first like fell in love or something .

i dont think the "somewhere" is a physical place. i think it's more metaphorical.
