Lyrics for Gravity as interpreted by okokayok

Gravity Lyrics
Gravity plays favorites--I know it 'cause I saw
Honest to God, officer, it's awful.
Down at work I'm getting too familiar with the floor
Showing off my talents by the mouthful

Hate to break it to you, but its out of my control
Forces go to work while we are sleeping
If I could attack with a more sensible approach
Obviously thats what I'd be doing

Now
Necks are cracking sideways
Hit me from the back side
I am on the white side
You are on the black side
Cut a piece thats bite size
Shoot me from my good side
If you got a straight line
This would be a good time

Gravity works slowly--if you notice it at all
Some of us are getting mighty lucky
If you had to live with this, you'd rather lie than fall
You think I can't fly? Well, you just watch me.

Now
Necks are cracking sideways
Hit me from the back side
I am on the thin side
You are on the fat side
Cut a piece thats bite size
Shoot me from my bad side
If you got a straight line
This would be a good time

The sky is always falling down on me
So officer, forgive me please!

I think this song is about the goverment. Alot of the lines make believe that. Especially this one.

forces go to work while we are sleeping

If you really think hard about it. It kinda fits...

I hear you ups, but am I the only one who thinks of giving a blow job when she sings,

"down at work i'm getting too familiar with the floor
trading in my talents by the mouthful"

? Heh...

maybe shes getting arrested cause she got her job by sleeping with the boss guy. and shes trying to explain it.
btw, this isn't actually xranidxrainbowx its her sister

it's mean to give you the impression of a blowjob. and the sister of xrancidxrainbowx was right. i think that in general, the song is about a girl who feels helpless and knows that many people would not consider what she does and how she does it right, but she feels as if it is not her fault that she is who she is.
"if i could attack with a more sensible approach
obviously thats what i'd be doing."

also, the lines before those saying, "hate to break it to you but its out of my control
forces go to work while we are sleeping" further shows my idea. again, she does not necessarily like how her life turned out, but it happened slowly before she realized what was happening and now she feels as if she cannot get out of the life she has chosen.

then again, i have come to the conclusion that all dresden dolls songs always have at least 2 interpretations. there is the literal one, and then there is always another deeper meaning, and often more than one. they leave it so that you can see it the way you want to see it. that is what makes them genius.

My favorite Dolls song. It captures my current mood perfectly, and my life most of the time.

The deeper meaning to this song comes completely from me, so I'm not going to post it. As a tribute to Nameless's statement that "you can see it the way you want to see it, that's what makes them genius"

One of my favorite songs
can anyone find out what all the crazy sayings are inbetween
"you think i can't fly well you just watch me WATCH ME"
&
"now necks are cracking sideways"

I believe it is something along the lines of:
"someone tell her
somone get her (get her off) oh
You can do it!
Good girl! (recites ABC's)
Right foot, Left Foot
Just the way we showed you
(other voices and goofy noises)

thanks ♥

the part right after "just the way we showed you"

"Posture! Posture"
maybe
"poke him or something and see if he's moving okay?"
"I think we've lost him!"

I wonder how much of this is about trying to move up, maybe her opinion about doing so for some careers. The blow job reference. The bit about right foot, left foot. It always reminds me of a little beauty pagent princess who's grown up and still trying to live under that enormous pressure.

Im generally way off base with these things though.

great song. i get the feeling that this song is about forces out of our control. like gravity. no matter how much we try to control our lives, there are things that we just cannot control.
i also get the impression that this song has got to do with appearance (some of us are getting lucky) and age.

To: obsidiancharisma. the bridge is: "someone's tired. someone get her home!" and that jumble of words where it sounds as if Amanda is screaming to herself across an empty room is: "You can do it! Good girl! (recites ABC's) (right) Right Foot! (left) Left Foot! Just like the way we showed you. look it's in colour! someone's in our seats dad! Hotter?! ahh oh oh oh hotter? (relaxation voice) look I think he's going now... OH MY GOD I'm GONNA see if HE'S MOVING OK?! I think you'd like to! necks are cracking sideways..." i sent you an email on this.. anywho

this song maybe about just plain gravity.

My father and i are at ends as so what in thew world she is saying in this song!
He says she says: "Let's keep this moving, okay!?" "I think we'd love to!"

Where as i think it's: "Poke him or somthing and see if he's moving, okay?" "i think we've lost him!"

My brother agrees with him, so i'm glad to see some people here on my side! lol

Although, we do agree that this song is awesome. ^^

I'm not sure if this is what it really means, but I heard someone interpret it as being about professional modelling. About how your body changes and it sucks but you can't help it. And it kind of explains the refrain. "Shoot me from my good side", "cut a piece that's bite-size" being small portions for anorexics. That's the way I like to interpret it.

I heard another interpretation of this song - that it's about drinking/drunk driving.

It explains a lot if you think about it - why she's talking to a police officer (drunk driving), that she has no control over gravity (it "plays favourites" - she keeps falling over because she's drunk).

It also explains why she's reciting the alphabet and the "right foot left foot" (they're making her walk in a straight line and say the alphabet to test if she's drunk or not).

"Trading in my talents by the mouthful"
I also used to think that this line was about a blow job, but it also could be in reference to alcohol.

Anyway, this is only one interpretation that just makes a lot of sense to me.

I think it's about anorexia and drinking. Maybe she's drinking because of the image she has of herself. Maybe she's talking to the officer about her life when he pulls her over for being drunk.

OHH you know what!!! the bridge MIGHT be "Someone's tired, someone get her HOME!" or "Someone tell her, someone get her OFF!" and the other bridge could possibly be "You can do it!! Good girl! (right) RIGHT foot (left) LEFT foot. Just like the way we showed you. Looks it's in colour, someone's in our seats dad!. HOTTER?! oh oh oh oh HOTTER?! ohh. look i think he's going now.. OMG I'M GONNA SEE IF HE'S MOVING OK?! I think we've LIKE TOO!" or "You can do it. good girl! (right) RIGHT FOOT! (left) LEFT FOOT! That's just the way we showed you. looks it's in colour, someone's in our seats dad!! POSTURE! oh oh oh oh POSTURE. ohhh. Look I think he's going now.. OMG I'm GONNA SEE IF HE'S MOVING OK?! I think we've lost HIM!" though I'm not 100 % sure about the "look it's in colour, someone's in our seats DAD!"

anyway since you guys are saying how it might be about Amanda's drunk behaviour you might be RIGHT!! because Amanda lived in Germany for one terrible year.. See while she was there all she did was drink and lose her money and friends. then she came back to boston and became famous for her being as "The Eight Foot Bride"

ok whoops!! i'm actually listening to the song right now.. maximum volume and now my ears are ringing.. OW! and yupp.. it's actually "someone tell her, someone get her off!" and blah blah blah then "look I think he's going.. poke him to see if he's moving ok? I think we've lost him!" but then again it kinda sounds like "i think we've lost too! well you know maybe this song's lyrics'll remain a mystery to all of us DD fans.. unless you go up to amanda and put a gun to her head and force her to tell you the lyrics.. or listen to her sing it at a cincert.. IF she ends up playing it...

cheers mate!

My first impression was that it was about drinking...but now I think it's about bulimia also.....the line "down at work i'm getting toofamiliar with the floor/showing off my talentsby the mouthful" makes me think of throwing up in the bathroom @ work kneeling on the floor.....and "i am on the thin side" and "cut a piece that's bite side" have to do with bulimia...and necks are cracking sideways makes me think of it too...because of the damage bulimia does to your throat.

just my own two cents.

I agree with Ups & Downs about it being about the Government espescially in the "Cut a piece thats bite size" line and "hate to break it to you but its out of my control
forces go to work while we are sleeping
if i could attack with a more sensible approach
obviously thats what i'd be doing"...All these meanings everyone have said make sense to me though :)

Modeling and anorexia?

Reminds me of models actually. Gravity plays favorites with weight. The officer could be the police or perhaps merely a person in charge. At work she is too busy dealing on the cat walk. She watches what she eats in order to be perfect. She is now out of control with the eating problems. Even when she is sleeping another pound is gained. She could try different ways too keep her weight off or down, but this works for her. She'd do it differently, but she can't.
Then on stage, people turn to look at her, photos are being taken from the back. She is in the limelight, the others are in the shadows. As long as she keeps control in portions of what she eats. People take photos of her good side as she walks a staight line.
When people pay attention to their weight, they see it is working slowly on everyone that most usually will not notice. Some people are lucky, some people have to work for their figures. You'd rather be in control than to have it out of their hands. People think you can't do it? You'll show them.

The stuff going on in the middle sounds like she is remembering her past and of how she always made it through when she tried. Do as taught. One foot at a time, she hears talking and almost loses focus and then collapses.

Everyone is looking at her, who fell on her back. She is so thin others seem fat compared to her. Each get what story they can on her. People are taking pictures, but for different reasons.
Soon everything she worked for is going down the drain. She has become so weak the sky seems to be heavy even. She is sorry that she failed.

----

Woman and an Officer?

There was a crime. She saw when the man fell and why. An officer is questioning her.
She underwent harrassment and dealt with things to keep in good graces, possibly physical. She cracked. She no longer could take it anymore. No one would help her. So she finally tried doing it her own way.
People turn their heads when they see her. She is taken from behind when out of sight. She is the good person, the other is the bad. He goes at her.

She makes her move. It all becomes a blur. She remembers childhood, how things were not supposed to turn out like this. Suddenly there is color... and it is red. She is slowly leaving the blurred thoughts and someone wakes her completely. The man is on the floor and very possibly dead.

Now people are looking at her. She is pushed from her backside, arms are cuffed from behind. She is small, the other is big. People are trying to get the story and gossip is passing bits by bits. Photos are being taken of her at her worst. Now would be a good time for a straight answer.

Everything always seems to go wrong for her. Things were not supposed to go such a way. She wants to officer to understand that.

*Shrugs* Does it mean those to me? Not necessarily. Do I think one of those is the meaning? Not really. Speculation.
