Lyrics for Coin-Operated Boy as interpreted by okokayok

Coin-Operated Boy Lyrics
Coin operated boy
Sitting on the shelf he is just a toy
But I turn him on and he comes to life
Automatic joy
That is why I want a coin operated boy

Made of plastic and elastic
He is rugged and long-lasting
Who could ever ever ask for more?
Love without complications galore
Many shapes and weights to choose from
I will never leave my bedroom
I will never cry at night again
Wrap my arms around him and pretend

Coin operated boy
All the other real ones that I destroy
Cannot hold a candle to my new boy
And I'll never let him go
And I'll never be alone
Not with my coin operated boy

This bridge was written to make you feel smittener
With my sad picture of girl getting bitterer
Can you extract me from my plastic fantasy?
I didn't think so but I'm still convinceable
Will you persist even after I bet you
A billion dollars that I'll never love you?
Will you persist even after I kiss you
Goodbye for the last time?
Will you keep on trying to prove it?
I'm dying to lose it
I want it
I want you
I want a coin operated boy

And if I had a star to wish on
For my life i can't imagine
Any flesh and blood could be his match
I can even take him in the bath

Coin operated boy
He may not be real experienced with girls
But I know he feels like a boy should feel
Isn't that the point?
That is why I want a
Coin operated boy
With his pretty coin operated voice
Saying that he loves me
That he's thinking of me
Straight and to the point
That is why I want
A coin operated boy

I'm willing to pretend for a second that the song isn't about a vibrator. Amanda can say what she wants about her intent, but if a girl is looking for a boy to love, it's about how he IS, not about what she WANTS. Otherwise it's not about wanting love, but about wanting a fucking puppet (literally). What's the difference between that and a vibrator? Either way, the song is about a sex toy. Straight and to the point.

If you watch the video it is extremely obvious that she isn't just talking about a vibrator. She wants a boy like she describes, "love without complications." The problem is, a boy like this is just fake, and even though she doesn't want to deal with the problems, she wants a real man with real emotions.

I think that she may be talking about a male hooker. She wants a coin-operated boy (she pays him money), love without complications galore (she just want sex without the whole complications). Idk it's what i think

You know, if there happens to be a website that the artist actually posts the true intentions of the song's lyrics on (http://www.dresdendolls.com/main1.htm), maybe it would be a good idea to CHECK the website before posting nonsense and insulting others' ideas. Christ.

It's about how men are complicated, and how she has been hurt by men, so she wants a "fake man." One she knows will love her. And one who won't cause her to stress out. This is especially shown by the lines "
love without complications galore" "i will never cry at night again."

She also seems to be wanting a real man. But is trying to convince herself that a fake man is better, and that she doesn't want this man who is always hurting her. In the bridge, she starts saying that she wants it but mistakenly starts saying "I want you" the man she is talking about in the bridge, and she becomes angry as she realizes what she is saying, and says she wants a "Coin-operated boy."

She can't help that she loves this guy. She questions at the end if it is the point that he should feel about her how a boy should feel, yet she claims the doll is "not experienced with girls." Even though there seems to be sex toy innuendos, like the "fuck him in the ass line" (which I've also heard twice in concert, yes, they're AMAZING live) I feel like those are still about the fact that she can do what she wills with the coin-operated boy and will get the result she desires. He's predictable. It's not at all only about a sex toy, because she is constantly describing the toy and not really knowing what to do.

If you go on the official website, Amanda says it's about how a girl is lonely, and wishes for someone flawless to love her.

I just kind of browsed the comments (partly because so much of them were about whether or not the song was about a dildo and reading those arguments over and over gets pretty annoying ^_^) so I don’t think anyone has said this but has anyone thought that the song is just about one guy? Of course there’s mention about the other real ones she destroyed but I was just thinking that both the the whole screwed-up nersery rhyme part AND the bridge could be about the same person.

There could be a guy and all she’s doing is playing and toying with him but because he’s “made of plastic and elastic” and he’s “rugged and long-lasting” he keeps coming back unlike all the other boys she’s been with and “destroyed”. He takes everything she throws at him and keeps saying that he loves her and that has caused her to see him as almost a wind-up doll that she can discard then pick up again, better than any human being. The bridge is her seeing him and his feelings as real. Almost like everything she’s doing is her pushing, seeing how much she could get away with (how many times she can say she doesn’t love him or tell him good bye) before he really gives up and leaves her, even though she knows that she’d miss him and be lonely if he ever really left.

Just another thought, like everything else that’s been said.

I was only a seedling of a Dresden Doll fan when I first posted my interpretation of this song, but I understand the song more fully now, and I pay attention when Amanda says a song is, or isn't about something.

eventually stopped reading the other posts. its clearly about a realtionship with a man mostly robotic thats only there for a finanical and physical relationship with no soical or emtional connection, and he can't take a hint that she wants him gone. women often times are sickly sarcastic and use the word 'want' for something they really really despise. i beleive this song is about that, why? because i was a dude like that, just a gooddamn monkey, two things were on my mind, a paycheck and sex.

Yeah, I think this song is about a sex toy. The girl in the song is just too emotionally disconnected that it's the closest thing to love for her.

It says "will you keep on trying to prove it?
i'm dying to lose it,
**i'm losing my confidence**
i want it
(...)"

Why is the phrase between ** missing?? =O

This song clearly shows us a girl who can't love a real man, because she thinks they'll abandon her someday. But a coin-operated boy won't; he's good in the bed, she can do anything with him, he's kind of a perfect, loyal man. She doesn't feel able to love because she fears not to be loved back and suffer.

Buy me a coin-operated boy!

I never thought it'd be about a sex toy either. The stanza's just way too deep and powerfull for that.
It's a song I can really relate too.

This song might sound like it's about a sex toy, and on some leval maybe it is, but it is much deeper then that. I think it's just about a woman who never quite knows how to fall in love, even though she wants to. She's saying she wishes someone would keep trying long enough so that it might work out for her, but she knows it won't happen. She wants a coin operated boy, but what she really wants is someone to "extract me from my plastic fantasy". In my mind the plastic fantasy IS the coin operated boy.
'tis my favourite song ^^

rainstormsong ftw.
The sex toy thing didn't even pop into my mind until I read these comments because of the way she personifies the 'coin-operated boy.' I can totally relate with it as well. No attachments, just a boy to play with and have 'fun' with. Happy to be with you without any of the normal dating stuff and says 'i love you' without anything around or inbetween. It's nice.

The men who have been in her life have had too many shortcomings, and she wishes she had a coin operated boy who would be there for her physically and emotionally whenever she needs him. I read a newspaper article that said in 50 years there will be robots that people can have sex with that look just like people, so if Amanda is still alive at 80 and not married, she could get one. Lol, I know she wouldn't actually get one, I just wanted to mention what I read about robots.

This song is like a tribute to lonlieness in a way because she doesn't want a real boy. She says she wants love without the complications meaning that she couldve had a past relationship(s) that were all the same and it turned her off of dating real people. Because she can't find the right guy, she direts her love towards a toy, even though it's programmed to love her, it isnt real love. its not about sex people. I mean just watch the video and it says it all.
