What's this odd game that’s all over the airwaves
It's their, loose lips
That lay me so sick with an ear pinned down on your chest
And all I heard were sighs from that shotgun
That she hides so well so well under that dress, my my, what an awful mess
Does that dress fit alright?
I want to know why it falls off and on
Are you okay, baby?
Hopefully Mississippi will end you like it did me
I’m a cabaret, a champagne café everyone uses to celebrate,
I’m just not ready to rot and dance and laugh to the sweetest death I ever had
And oh my, you look awful with a mouthful of sex like drugs, but I just can’t seem
To switch off this machine that turns ivory into kerosene
Does that dress fit alright?
I want to know why it falls off and on
Are you okay, baby?
Hopefully New York City will lose you like it did me

General Comment:Man I wish people still used this site.

This song is obviously about drugs, heroin, like half of there songs.

"What's this odd game that's all over the airwaves?"
The game he's speaking of is drug use

"And all I heard were sighs from that shotgun
that she hides so well under that dress"
Shotgun refrences shooting up and then hiding the tract marks.

    "I'm a cabaret
    A Champaign cafe'
    Everyone uses to celebrate
But I"m just not ready to rot and dance and laugh
to the sweetest death I ever had"

Again referencing how he uses it to make himself feel better, its the the best feeling hes ever had and its killing him, but it feels good so he doesn't care.

General Comment:Im gonna take a shot at this...
What’s this odd game that’s all over the airwaves?
It’s their loose lips that laid me so sick with and ear
    pinned down on your chest…

(Big time reputation in a smaller town as a male "whore" )

And all I heard were sighs from that shotgun
that she hides so well under that dress
My my what an awful mess…

(A shot gun is traditonally used as a form of protection, so shes "protectiong herself" maybe she has the same addiction as him?)

    Does that dress fit alright?
I wanna know why it falls off and on
    Are you ok baby?
Hopefully Mississippi will lynch you like it did me...

(He sleeps with ladies and end ends up using him again and again( ending up with a negitive rep.)

    I’m a cabaret
    A Champaign café
    Everyone uses to celebrate
But I’m just not ready to rot and dance and laugh
to the sweetest death I ever had…

(He's being used all the time and fall into "love/bed too quickly)

My my you look awful with a mouthful
    Of sex …like drugs
but I just can’t seem to switch off this machine
    That turns ivory into kerosene

(Sex is like an addiction that he can turn from so much it was once sweet and beautiful now its a fire that will hurt him)

    Does that dress fit alright?
I wanna know why it falls off and on
    Are you ok baby?
Hopefully New York City will lose you like it did me

(He moved away from his small town to a big city so he can better hide from his addiction of sex)

I’ve got glass eyes that has dined so many times
with thighs and sighs that scream I got to get mine...

(His weakness is that he sees a girl and wants to sleep with her... "I got to get mine")

That's my stap at it... I think its kinda right... deff not about cheating...tho...

General Comment:I'm almost certain it's about him trying to tell a buddy that his girlfreind is cheating on him but his buddy won't believe him.

General Comment:"Hopefully Mississippi will lynch you like it did me."

Lynching is a form of violence, usually murder, in which the accused person is put to death (most often by hanging) without a lawful trial. The act was especially popular in Mississippi, used by the KKK to hang African-Americans within an inch of their life before cutting them down.
Keeping that in mind, this line seems to suggest that the writer feels as though he's dying (or has almost died) and wishes this girl would feel what he's going through.

General Comment:to shed perhaps a little different light on the ivory into kerosene part: he says, "hopefully mississippi will lynch you like it did me." the lynching (death without trial) process didn't only involve hanging, but often included tarring and feathering, followed by burning. ivory isn't known merely for something that's valuable, or else he could have used any number of other potent words. ivory might be referencing the way Paul McCartney and Stevie wonder used it in Ebony and Ivory, where they are the black and white keys on the keyboard, respectively. in lynching, it was usually the blacks (ebony) being hung, tarred, feathered, burned, etc. but in this case he's talking about a white (ivory) person. kerosene is known for catching fire and holding a flame. him saying that there's a machine at all that turns ivory into kerosene means he sees himself as if he's burning her alive - and he can't turn off this machine. no matter what he does, he's still being lynched and burned alive, like in mississippi...but because it's at the hands of someone he loves, it's "the sweetest death he ever had."

you could also make an argument that the girl is the one whose skin is being burned like kerosene because that's what he wants to do to her everytime he sees her, based on the pain he feels. but i think that's a much weaker argument.

the sweetest death line is something that i've also connected with. i wrote a tweaked sonnet once that used the lines: "Alas, the time had passed - I'm shot with ease / To pass away by gun cocked with daisies," basically meaning that i was shot and left to die in the most beautiful and lovely way possible...i think this song expresses the same sentiment.

General Comment:one thing about the ivory into kerosene, i think its ivory being beutiful but its changing it into power, kerosene fuels things, its like taking your beuty and using it for power

General Comment:I picture them in a bedroom, both drunk or somewhat under the influence. And she is lusting for him.

    1. I like the idea that the song is loosely based on Ralph Ellison's novel like web250 said.

    2. I think promisexkept is right in her interpretation of a failing relationship and the girl he loves is a whore (at least 4 the moment).

-The song is beautifully sung "does that dress fit alright?" "My, my you look/ awful/ with a mouthful/ of sex like drugs....I just can't seem to switch off this moon she matters on the ivory and kerose-eene"

And my favorite part...I've got glass eyes that have died (dined) so many times, with thighs and sighs that scream gotta get mine.

The songs not about anorexia, why would he be involved with an anorexic chick?? Plus the words would be different. It's not about cheating, and it's not about pregnancy.

And this is just what i think...WHat does a girl have in her mouth besides his manhood? --My, my you look awful with a mouthful of sex like drugs. Plus this sure would be a way to seduce someone. Which to me is what this song is about. "He's just not/ ready to rot, and dance, and laugh, to the sweetest death/ I've ever had. Mind-blowing sex with someone you've experienced thousands of times...but you know its only for that sake. The life of their love has died.
