Lyrics for It Ends with a Fall as interpreted by Totoro

It Ends with a Fall Lyrics
Wish I could remember
why it mattered to me.
It doesn’t matter to me.
It doesn’t matter to me
anymore.
Now that you’re
feeling fine,
I’ll admit that – though

I know it’s coming down,
and see it shattering me
- it doesn’t matter to me,
and I’m not sadder for
seeing it come.
I’m not going to run.
I will just come
when I am called.

You want to cut me off
because I took too much,
but don’t leave me alone
Take off your scarves,
your winter coat.
The night’s too cold.

When we met I should have said
you’re like a sister to me,
how all that kiss her just seem
like puny suitors I can see through,
how none will do,
no not for you,
how it might as well just be us two.

And when I pulled you by the jacket
from the clattering street,
you started flattering me,
you started saying I was so strong.
String me along,
but I can’t become
all that I’m called.

And I can’t claim to know
what makes love die or grow,
but I can still take control
and so refuse to just go home,
back down the hall.

And as I crawl,
as finally all
the false confetti blooms
up in this attic room,
I’m going make my stand.
I want to see both of your hands
put down the phone.

I won’t let you go,
although
the moment stole
my self-control
from us all
and now it can only end
end with a fall.

"Wish I could remember why it mattered to me." My favorite OR song. One of my favorite songs by any band actually. This song is a collection of conflicting statements and emotions. Reminds me of relationship I've been interwined in now for 6 years. Like most great songs the main theme is resignation to the failure of romance. "I won't let you go, although the moment stole my self-crontrol from us all and it can only end...end with a fall."

This song just always reminded me of a situation where you're falling in love with your best friend. This case in particular seems like he's falling in love with his roommate. The jealousy and saying that no one is good enough for the person, and, the ending itself speaks to how such closeness always "ends with a fall." In others words, he can't help falling in love with her, even though he knows he shouldn't.

The song spoke to me so much, and I can't help but cry so many times I listen to it. It's one of my favorite Okkervil River songs

There's a huge recurring theme in almost all Okkervil albums about impossible or irretrievable love and how hard it is to deal with. Black Sheep Boy was all about a man watching a woman fall in love with the wrong man (For Real, Song of Our So-Called Friend, A Stone, So Come Back, I am Waiting, etc.). And then obviously the album Don't Fall In Love With Everyone You See was about exactly what it sounds like. So now, different album, similar story. It Ends with a Fall is pretty much the same thing but now it's not just any girl, it is his best friend. Watching your best friend of the opposite sex fall in love with "puny suitors I can see through" is probably one of the most frustrating things to experience, frustrating enough that he had to do something about it and it led to the downfall of his friendship with her. It's a shame, but sometimes you just can't help it.

Pretty sad.

i really like this song alot, but in particular:

Wish I could remember
why it mattered to me.
It doesn’t matter to me.
It doesn’t matter to me
anymore.
Now that you’re
feeling fine,
I’ll admit that – though

I know it’s coming down,
and see it shattering me
- it doesn’t matter to me,
and I’m not sadder for
seeing it come.
I’m not going to run.
I will just come
when I am called.

I just got from it that it's about the narrator having tried (or succeeded) to rape his (ex-)girlfriend, and she's calling for help. He's sorry, realising that it's over. He lost his self control, which could be a reference to sexual lust.

Incredible song anyhow.

I swear to god... you people failed the poetry analysis section of English class in high school, because so many of you seem incapable of analyzing the song. You completely ignore entire sections of lyrics. You know, the words they choose aren't random, and every stanza contributes to the meaning.

Good song.

sounds like he is falling in love with his best friend/ roommate. the girl he loves doesn't realize that he love her. she flatters and compliments him "stringing him along" and he takes it a different way than what she means. he doesn't want to see her with anyone else

"how all that kiss her just seem
like puny suitors I can see through,
how none will do,
no not for you..."

but for some reason he can't be "strong" and tell her his feelings. eventually he goes to her room to tell her and loses all self-control
