I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real

The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end

And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liars chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair

Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end

And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
A million miles away
I will keep myself
I would find a way

General Comment:I think it draws on the fact that what you accomplish in life all that is left is your legacy. What you build up you can leave for your family but can't take it with you when you die. Think I heard the other day that NIN aren't going to do it again cos they thought they'd never be able to do it as well as Johnny Cash and despite being their song out of respect for Cash's version wouldn't sing it again.

General Comment:It was a young mans angst when NIN did it and an old mans regret when cash did it. It shows Cash's fragility. and the regret for things he has done in life.

General Comment:To be honest, yeah, I know Nine Inch Nails made it about drug abuse, but Johnny sang it partly because it was so relative to his own life apparently. I didn't know he recorded it just a few weeks, before his wife died, PTCGAZ, thanks for the info. Sorry about your wife, I hope things work out for you.
Yeah, I think Johnny made this song pretty personal. I think everyone who's been through bad times can relate to it.

My Interpretation:Sorry for my humble expression, first. I am not native English speaker.

I think Cash tried to express fragileness or uncertainty of human life by this song.

    What have I become
    My sweetest friend
    Everyone I know
    Goes away in the end

This part seemts to say that you had archieved something special and show off it, but he realized that the death would seap away everything.

And you could have it all
    My empire of dirt
    I will let you down
    I will make you hurt

This part seems that Cash says even if you could have succeeded and had everything you want (like him), it would only turn out dirt (or be broken) by end of your life. Or maybe he had realized that what he had archieved in his life was not what he really should have.

I think he song of vacancy or hopeless of human life...

General Comment:this has probably been mentioned before, but I dont wanna read all 900 entries..
The song as originally written by NIN was about drug abuse.. and hurting everyone around yourself when you are on drugs.

Cash's version is better in that it's about a life wasted and longing to start over again, with the one he loved. Keep in mind his wife died a few weeks before he did this.. so at the end he was lamenting the loss of his wife.. he died a short time later.. like a lot of old people do.. FROM a broken heart.. ok I know that isn't what killed him, but it's sorta like what happens a lot of the time.. one thing or another happens, but sometimes people aren't the same after the deaths of their spouses. I know I have been messed up since my ex-wife divorced me. I am young tho, and we were only married a few years..

General Comment:I think the song is about dealing with someone or one self and bipolar disorder. ''I hurt myself today to see if I still feel''

"Everyone I know goes away in the end''

Its about how when you have bipolar disorder you chase all of people who care from you away. and Peopl who are bipolar always feel alone.

My Interpretation:In this song, Johnny describes the hell that he went through during his life and at times he had an empire of dirt. "What have I become?" can be described in two ways. He can be describing how he commited some crimes and now look what he has become or it could me the more reasonable answer, which is that he has looked back through his hardships and has seen just what an influence in music he has become. Today he is a legend in music. "Everyone I know, goes away in the end" can describe how he has watched many of his legendary and close friends die and see that he is left behind. He is looking back at all the people he has met and the millions of hearts that he touched in music. He is a legend, look at what he has become.

General Comment:Yes the Johnny Cash version is fantastic, but you cannot diss the NIN version. It is THEIR FUCKING SONG. They wrote the lyrics, the music, everything, years before this cover. If it weren't for them, you would never have heard this beautiful piece of music, so don't diss the NIN.

General Comment:I kind of related to this song on a personal level as feeling very depressed. The lyrics "everyone I know goes away in the end" is coming to the realization that whatever we are going through we have to go through on our own either way. It leads to no real feeling of escape other than just ending it all..
