Maybe different, but remember
Winters warm there you and I,
Kissing whiskey by the fire
With the snow outside
And the summer comes
The river swims at midnight
Shiver cold
Touch the bottom, you and I
With muddy toes

Stay or leave
I want you not to go
But you should
It was good, as good goes
Stay or leave
I want you not to go
But you did

Wake up naked drinking coffee,
Making plans to change the world
While the world is changing us...
It was good good love.
You used to laugh under the covers
Maybe not so often now
But the way I used to laugh with you
Was loud and hard

Stay or leave
I want you not to go
But you should
It was good as good goes
Stay or leave
I want you not to go
But you did

So what to do
With the rest of today's afternoon, hey
Isn't it strange how we change
Everything we did
Did I do all that i should

That I could'a done

Remember we used to dance
And everyone wanted to be
You and me
I want to be too
What day is this
Besides the day you left me?
What day is this
Besides the day you went?

So what to do
With the rest of the day's afternoon, hey
Well isn't it strange how we change
Everything we did
Did I do all that I could

Remember we used to dance
And everyone wanted to be you and me
I want to be too
What day is this
Besides the day you went babe
What day is this

Memory:I don't know exactly what this song means. Like kbkaitemarie5 said, it could mean any of a dozen things.

I know what it means to me though. This one is about a man looking back at his relationship. Not from the table, weeping over a dear john letter. But from the distance of time. Remembering the good times. The freedom and passion that comes in love. And remembering the end, the distance and pain. But muted, and with the sense of realism that comes with stepping outside of something.
He can see the reality of things. The growing distance. What he should and shouldn't have done to stop what seems now to have been so obvious. He loved her, and he hated her. He blamed her for leaving, but sees now that there really was no other choice. He misses the simpler times, when they were happy for no other reason than being together. When life was something that would change itself to their desires.
Instead, it was them that changed. Routines slipping in and replacing passion with the 9-5 grind and credit card bills. Real life replaced the honeymoon disconnect from reality. The fires burned low until maybe, one day, it was another spark that blossomed in her bosom. Maybe someone else stepped in and breathed life into her ashes. Maybe she just grew tired of the cold.
Either way he looks back with a sad reminiscence on a time filled with joy, and sorrow. With life.

General Comment:This song to me could mean 15 different things. But what i prefer to think is that its about a man who knows that he loves this woman. He knows she loved him with everything she has. but he also knows that she deserves better. He misses the times where it was carefree and there were no problems. and He hates the fact that he couldnt be there for everything.

lol I'm a little biased. but this is what i believe.

General Comment:A more reminiscent lost love tale then the average Dave written song; The song uses a day as an allusion to life. The opening line tells that the song is sung in a positive light, i.e., some of the memories, ‘maybe different’, but ‘remember’ the positive times. The singer is aware that the lost love is better off without him, but the pain is still present. ‘Wake up naked…’ represents birth, with the coffee reference as an awaking to the world. ‘The rest of the days afternoon…’ represents midlife, pondering how the singer will continue now that the love is gone. Time becomes insignificant, because every day remains ‘…the day you went away’.

General Comment:This song is so emotional and beautiful. It made me cry before I even had experienced heartache. Dave never fails to tug at my heart. I saw him at the 10,000 lakes fest last summer and it might have been the best experience of my Life!!!

General Comment:I'm not a huge fan of DMB in general( in all honesty, they kind of put me to sleep) but this song really stood out for me. |Its a very bittersweet song, because its about getting your heart broken and that feeling of having no control when that happens. But at the same time, i think its saying that there will always be memories, and no one can take that, a permananet souvenior for when its over. I feel like its not about a bitter parting at all, its more like, hey we both grew up, wne tour seperate ways, but it was great while it lasted. And in the end, I think a little piece of your heart will always belong to anyone you've ever loved.

p.s. crasus, you're a very brave person for being able to share something so personal. You're story litterally made me cry to know that there really is a such thing as true love out there. I hope you stay strong for the rest of your life, and that there really is a place for us to all meet up when we die. Maybe we live just to experience getting hurt...that way we can really appreciation heaven.

General Comment:this is definitely one of my favorite dave songs...it's pure brilliance....i love the bittersweet feel to it (lyrics and melody) it amazes me because it's one thing to write lyrics that are bittersweet but writing that kind of melody thats so happy and sad at the same time blows my mind!

i love the lines "wake up naked drinking coffee, making plans to change the world, while the world is changing us"

to me, that means that they thought they could change and conquer the world, so to speak, but in the process it was the other way around and the world changed and conquered them

General Comment:bigshot937 you nailed it! I had the most metaphysical relationship for a year and a half (my first love), we planned on staying together forever, he said he was going to marry me in the future. Then one day (literally) he said he was confused and didn't know what he wanted anymore, considering he was moving away for school in the fall. Then he started to make a myriad list of excuses, that we are not compatible, justifying this resolve, although I know that's not the truth. Listening to this song brings back those memories that we shared and parrallels it perfectly. Everyone was jealous of our relationship because we seemed to have it all, so much love and affection beyond the physical, we were soul mates. I hope one day he will realize that we are meant to be and ultimately come back to me in the end. I feel like Dave, his lyrics are my exact thoughts. The song paints a picture in my mind of all of the times we shared, the sleepovers we had, laughing hystarically at the most ridiculous things, dancing together, he was my other half. This song brings back those nostalgic memories and it makes me want to cry. I'll always love him.
