Don't know why I'm still afraid
If you weren't real I would make you up
Now
I wish that I could follow through
I know that your love is true
And deep
As the sea
But right now
Everything you want is wrong,
And right now
All your dreams are waking up,
And right now
I wish I could follow you
To the shores
Of freedom,
Where no one lives.

Remember when we first met
And everything was still a bet
In love's game
You would call; I'd call you back
And then I'd leave
A message
On your answering
Machine

But right now
Everything is turning blue,
And right now
The sun is trying to kill the moon,
And right now
I wish I could follow you
To the shores
Of freedom,
Where no one lives

Freedom
Run away tonight
Freedom, freedom
Run away
Run away tonight

We're made out of blood and rust
Looking for someone to trust
Without
A fight
I think that you came too soon
You're the honey and the moon
That lights
Up my night

But right now
Everything you want is wrong,
And right now
All your dreams are waking up,
And right now
I wish that I could follow you
To the shores
Of freedom
Where no one lives

Freedom
Run away tonight
Freedom freedom
Run away
Run away tonight

We got too much time to kill
Like pigeons on my windowsill
We hang around

Ever since I've been with you
You hold me up
All the time I'm falling down

But right now
Everything is turning blue,
And right now
The sun is trying to kill the moon,
And right now
I wish i could follow you
To the shores
Of freedom
Where no one lives

Freedom
Run away tonight
Freedom freedom
Run away
Run away tonight

General Comment:To me, this song is about a guy who is maybe 25 or 26 (maybe older) and is out settling into the world after college. Then he meets someone who is 16-19 but is very mature for her age. This being set, she is in love with him (though maybe naively so) and he has feelings for her, but he also understands she is very young, whether she knows it or not, and doesn't truly know what she wants and needs to follow her dreams which are just now coming into the realm of being obtainable. He says she "came too soon" meaning they might have something but she still needs to go through those years of independently finding herself. He wants to follow her to the "shores of freedom where no one lives". Once again these being those years where you can make mistakes and be free without seriously compromising lifetime work or goals or someone else's life. But he has been there and can't follow her now. But those feelings are there that night and, as the night fades, reality of this situation is coming back and he is doing what is best for both of them.

General Comment:My take on this song is that it is about someone who is in an unfulfilling marriage (or other committed relationship) who meets someone else, falls in love and realizes all that is missing in his life. The only problem is that she wants him to invest himself fully in the relationship and he cannot because of his existing one.

He wishes that the passing of time will somehow resolve his problem and he avoids reality (perhaps fearing that this will somehow destroy the purety of his newfound relationship). At the end he gives up on his new relationship believing that they are fleeing reality with a strong belief that somehow they being together cannot ever be. He chooses to continue with his unfulfilling relationship and let this new love die content to nurture his memories of their past love.

General Comment:this is such a beautiful song and it means so much to me. i just ended with the love of my life and despite the fact we love each other, the time isn't right - we 'came too soon.' the song shows that you can love someone but neither of you be in the right place. it shows that the time matters as much as the feelings that you share. i wish that things could work out between me and my guy right now, but it isn't right now so this song gives me hope that one day we will be together again and it will be alright. this song shows that love and pain can overlap. it shows that no matter how much you wish you can 'follow' someone you can't unless everything they want collides with what you want. the pain is poignant but all you can do is hope that one day you will be together and experience 'freedom' and take the leap by 'running away' with your feelings. this song gives me hope.

General Comment:I believe this song means that he feels like this person is everything he has always dreamed for in a love 'if you weren't real I would make you up,' but that he is afraid. ‎'We're made out of blood and rust looking for someone to trust, without a fight.' He has been burned in the past, and he may feel like he wants to commit but his fear is holding him back. This love has appeared out of nowhere 'I think that you came too soon,' and now that it's real he doesn't know how to react.

General Comment:I think this song means he has found everything he's ever dreamed for in a love 'If you weren't real, I would make you up,' but that he's afraid because he's been burned in the past. ‎'We're made out of blood and rust looking for someone to trust, without a fight.' He's afraid because suddenly BAM! Who he has always dreamed of has suddenly arrived he's not sure if he's ready or how to love and trust this person 'I think that you came too soon.' He feels that he has wished for it for so long, and now that everything he's wanted is finally here, his fear is holding him back. 'I wish I could follow you to the shores of freedom, where no one lives.' He wants to break free of his fear, and run away with whom he loves.

Song Meaning:To me this song means something else entirely and is very close to my heart.
When he says, " I don't know why I'm still afraid" I believe he starts out that way because he wants to express that being with someone he's still afraid to open up all the way. He's afraid to let them in or to trust them or accept their love. You can see how he's holding himself back when he says,"I wish that I could follow through".
From other parts of the song you can see that he thinks the world of the other person and for that reason he is also very afraid to be hurt. And, while holding himself back he is making everything depressing because he is so down on everything. This person holds on to him anyway because they love him and wants to make everything better.
"I know that your love is true, And deep, As the sea", he knows that the other person loves them.
"But right now, Everything you want is wrong", the other person only wants them but he is too down on himself to believe that someone can possibly want him.
"And right now,All your dreams are waking up", he realizes while he's holding himself back he's not growing with this other person so they are growing without him and finding what they really want.
"And right now,I wish I could follow you" He's slowly realizing everything and wants to follow the person while they go on with life.
"To the shores,Of freedom,Where no one lives." The shores of freedom to me seem like somewhere where he is not afraid to let the other person in, he doesn't have to worry about anyone else coming in and swooping away with his loved one because it's just the two of them forever with no sadness.

General Comment:I think everyone's suggestions about the song's meanings are close. But...

I believe the song is from Joseph's POV. He met someone that he's fallen in love with, however, it's just not or hasn't been the right time to be together. Why? The song suggests that's *he's* afraid to fall in love. Maybe he hasn't had good experience with allowing himself to be free (without fear) with someone.

I think he's afraid to be with this person even though he knows he shouldn't be. Fear is irrational and can weight you down and hold you back from experiencing beautiful, awesome things. I think that's what he means about the "shores of freedom". A life without fear of love *is* freedom.

Also, on the "all you want is wrong" line: I think he means the other's persons wants are right BUT the *timing* is wrong.

Other songs on his album this song is featured on suggests that he eventually leaves this person (he gives up) because he's not ready to be in love or open himself up to love.

General Comment:It's a relationship gone wrong. they've already tried it, and they cant seem to let go. He doesn't want anyone but her, but there's so much conflict in the relationship. He knows she loves him too, and she wants it to work so bad, but he feels so much pain. Too much pain to keep going in the relationship. He wishes more than anything that they could just go away to the "shores of freedom" meaning, only themselves, and how they used to be before everything went wrong. They remember everything in the past. How everything was amazing, how they were happy. But now, everything is a constant battle. Nothing in the relationship is going right. There trying to hold on to how they are, but they just can't.

My Interpretation:I guess he really loves her, and she really loves him back. But it seems like she wants something else than him or that he's afraid of their relationship... on the one hand he wants to be free with her, but somehow he cannot. It's not the right time for him, he feels like she came too early into his life and that's why they can't be together in the end... He should get over his fears and embrace what they have, it doesn't have to be perfect all the time.
It strikes me because she holds him up and cares for him... he should try to open up. Than everything would turn out, I think. He fences himself in.
